2 The love of God has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us (Jn. 16). Holy Trinity Sunday Dear Parishioners and Visitors: Welcome to our Eucharistic celebration especially on this Trinity Sunday, celebrating One God in Three Persons (Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit). As Catholic Christians, the celebrations of the sacramental life of the Church encompass every aspect of our faith in the Holy Trinity. The Catechism explains in this way: In the Church's liturgy the divine blessing is fully revealed and communicated. The Father is acknowledged and adored as the source and the end of all the blessings of creation and salvation. In his Word who became incarnate, died, and rose for us, he fills us with his blessings. Through his Word, he pours into our hearts the Gift that contains all gifts, the Holy Spirit (CCC 1082). Inspired Teaching, Expressions of the Holy Spirit - Content, Context, Communicator Last Sunday, as we celebrated the descent of Holy Spirit, I focused my homily on the understanding of teaching. We are all called to be teachers in many aspects of our lives from the various relationships: in the family (parents to children, sibling to sibling), in the school (teachers to students, peer to peer), and in the workplace (managers to employees, colleague to colleague). There are certain unique moments when our teachings can become inspirational where the listeners are moved by the Holy Spirit and attempt to make a difference in their way of life. This inspired teaching is the intimate expression of the Holy Spirit through the words that we speak and the examples that we live. The Holy Spirit shares this intimate expressions in three unique ways: 1) Content of the message is meaningful and/or challenging to the listeners; 2) Context - how the message was framed in various settings such as during periods of war and/or persecutions; 3) Communicator was not afraid but courageous to deliver the content in the context that the listeners were longing to hear. Amoris Laetitia - A Summary of The Joy of Love by Pope Francis (Part 6) Chapter four: Love in marriage (89-164) A MESSAGE FROM FR. TRUC The fourth chapter treats love in marriage, which it illuminates with Saint Paul s Hymn to Love in 1Corinthians13:4-7. This opening section is truly a painstaking, focused, inspired and poetic exegesis of the Pauline text. It is a collection of brief passages carefully and tenderly describing human love in absolutely concrete terms. The quality of psychological introspection that marks this exegesis is striking. The psychological insights enter into the emotional world of the spouses positive and negative and the erotic dimension of love. This is an extremely rich and valuable contribution to Christian married life, unprecedented in previous papal documents. This section digresses briefly from the more extensive, perceptive treatment of the day-to-day experience of married love which the Pope refuses to judge against ideal standards: There is no need to lay upon two limited persons the tremendous burden of having to reproduce perfectly the union existing between Christ and his Church, for marriage as a sign entails a dynamic process, one which advances gradually with the progressive integration of the gifts of God (AL 122). On the other hand, the Pope forcefully stresses the fact that conjugal love by its very nature defines the partners in a richly encompassing and lasting union (AL 123), precisely within that mixture of enjoyment and struggles, tensions and repose, pain and relief, satisfactions and longings, annoyances and pleasures (Al 126) which indeed make up a marriage. The chapter concludes with a very important reflection on the transformation of love because Longer life spans now mean that close and exclusive relationships must last for four, five or even six decades; consequently, the initial decision has to be frequently renewed (AL 163). As physical appearance alters, the loving attraction does not lessen but changes as sexual desire can be transformed over time into the desire for togetherness and mutuality: There is no guarantee that we will feel the same way all through life. Yet if a couple can come up with a shared and lasting life project, they can love one another and live as one until death do them part, enjoying an enriching intimacy (AL 163). 3 WORSHIP, LITURGY & FAITH JOURNEY OF FAITH We are on a long and eventful journey. Today's readings for Trinity Sunday succinctly cover the depth and breadth of our human travels. The very beginnings of our journey are revealed in the reading from Proverbs. God's plan filled with divine wisdom was born before the earth was made. In today's Gospel, Jesus speaks of his own personal journey. He has come from the Father and will return to the Father. Only then will the Advocate--the Spirit of Truth-take us onward. This does not diminish the fact that the journey will be hard. The very setting of the Gospel is the night before Jesus died. As Saint Paul writes to the Romans, "[W]e even boast of our afflictions, knowing that affliction produces endurance, and endurance, proven character, and proven character, hope" (Romans 5:3-4). Ultimately, our human journey is modeled by the Holy Trinity-a family of love among Father, Son, and Spirit that we are all called to emulate. JSPaluch Co., Inc. Jubilee of Mercy: Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity The word mercy, Pope Francis declared in his announcement of the Jubilee Year of Mercy, "reveals the very mystery of the Most Holy Trinity" (Misericordiae Vultus, 2). For mercy is how God comes to meet us; mercy is the fundamental law helping us recognize everyone as brothers and sisters; mercy is the bridge connecting God and humanity, opening our hearts to the hope of being loved forever despite our sinfulness. God's self-revelation as a life-giving, love-sharing Trinity of Persons draws us closer to God in friendship and communion. Both Judaism and Islam consider mercy one of God's most important attributes. Israel unceasingly proclaims God boundless in mercy. Islam addresses the Creator as "Merciful and Kind," believing divine mercy limitless, its doors always open. May this Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis prays, open us to more fervent dialogue, deepen our mutual understanding, eliminate all closed-minded disrespect, and drive out every form of violence and discrimination. --Peter Scagnelli, JSPaluch Co., Inc.; Papal quotes 2015, Libreria Editrice Va cana. 4 FIRST FRIDAY... PARISH LIFE: MINISTRY, EVENTS & REMINDERS devotions among Catholics are related to devotion to the Sacred Heart of Christ. First Friday practices date to the last decades of the 17th century, when Jesus appeared to St. Margaret Mary and spoke to her of His Sacred Heart. Among the promises Our Lord revealed to St. Margaret Mary, the 12th specifically referenced practices for Fridays: In the excess of the mercy of my Heart, I promise you that my all powerful love will grant to all those who will receive Communion on the First Fridays, for nine consecutive months, the grace of final repentance: they will not die in my displeasure, nor without receiving the sacraments; and my Heart will be their secure refuge in that last hour. Devotion to the Sacred Heart, as given to St. Margaret by Jesus, began to grow in popularity as soon as the saintly woman had died, but was officially recognized 75 years later. Though the devotion dictated to Margaret referred to 9 consecutive first Fridays, it does not need to end there. Many of the Catholic faithful continue to make the First Friday devotion beyond the nine consecutive months. Won t you spend an hour with me? Are you interested in becoming Catholic? The process by which adults come into the Church has come to be known as "the RCIA", which is short for "The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults." Who is the process for? (1) The unbaptized. The primary focus of the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is on those who are not already Christian and have not been catechized. (2) Baptized but uncatechized. Those who have been baptized either as Roman Catholics or as members of another Christian community but did not receive further catechetical formation or instruction. These typically have also not celebrated confirmation nor Eucharist. (3) Those seeking full Catholic Communion. These are baptized, practicing Christians from other denominations who seek entry into the Catholic Church. Those who enter the process are expected to attend weekly sessions (Mondays at 7pm) and Sunday Masses. RCIA season begins in the fall. To learn more about Catholicism or have a deeper understanding of our faith, contact the parish office or RCIA@cathdralchapel.org. First Communion Program: Sacramental Preparation for the children in our community First Communion preparation is a two-year process for Catholic children beginning in 1st Grade and up. Classes are held every Wednesday at 3:45pm-5:00pm. Annual program fee is $60 per child. If you have 2 or more children attending, the fee for 2nd child is $50. Registration fee of $10 is required for each student and will be credited towards annual program fee. Registration for school year begins in Aug Blest be God the Father, and the Only Bego en Son of God, and also the Holy Spirit, for he has shown us his merciful love ~ Proverbs 8:22-31 (166C) PARISH next 2-weeks CALENDAR May 28-29, Archdiocese s Priest Re rement Fund Announcement May 30 Memorial Day Holiday, Office Closed JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY FOOD DRIVE (December 8, 2015 November 20, 2016) YOUR STEWARDSHIP OFFERING: Weekend of May 14-15, 2016 Envelope & Loose Offerings: $4449 Building Fund: $680 June 3 First Friday Adora on of the Blessed Sacrament June 4-5, Archdiocese s Priest Re rement Fund 2nd Collec on Our Lady of Perpetual Help Novena, Rosary, Mass Wednesdays, 6:30 PM May is Military Appreciation Month Congress designated May as National Military Appreciation Month in 1999 to ensure the nation was given the opportunity to publically demonstrate their appreciation for the sacrifices and successes made by our service members past and present. Tip to Military Appreciation: Skip the Sympathy-Give Appreciation: Military members don t want you to feel sorry for them. We chose this life and we are happy to serve. So instead of saying I m sorry, say Thank you! Encouraging words make us beam with pride. military.com SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN Archdiocese provides resources for parishioners to learn more. 5 In grateful thanksgiving for the gift of your service to our parish s Religious Education Programs To Sister Anna Tom and most especially to all our Religious Education Catechists and program assistants and volunteers, we thank you for your service and love. Catechists are people who keep the memory of God alive in themselves and are able to revive it in others. ~ Pope Francis Year of Mercy How can we show others the mercy of God? We say that God is compassionate, but we ignore the poor. We say that God loves us and has mercy on us, but we hold grudges against our friends. Our actions need to authentically reflect God's mercy. Click below to explore the different ways that you can live out that mercy every day! Corporal Works of Mercy: The Corporal Works of Mercy are found in the teachings of Jesus and give us a model for how we should treat all others, as if they were Christ in disguise. They "are charitable actions by which we help our neighbors in their bodily needs" (USCCA). They respond to the basic needs of humanity as we journey together through this life. he Corporal works of mercy are: feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, shelter the homeless, visit the sick, visit the prisoners, bury the dead, give alms to the poor. (To be continued next week.) From the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops: Catholics Care. Catholics Vote. "We need to participate for the common good. Sometimes we hear: a good Catholic is not interested in politics. This is not true: good Catholics immerse themselves in politics by offering the best of themselves so that the leader can govern." - Pope Francis, 9/16/13 The Catholic bishops of the United States are pleased to offer once again to the Catholic faithful Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship (en Español), our teaching document on the political responsibility of Catholics. This statement represents our guidance for Catholics in the exercise of their rights and duties as participants in our democracy. We urge our pastors, lay and religious faithful, and all people of good will to use this statement to help form their consciences; to teach those entrusted to their care; to contribute to civil and respectful public dialogue; and to shape political choices in the coming election in light of Catholic teaching. The statement lifts up our dual heritage as both faithful Catholics and American citizens with rights and duties as participants in the civil order. You can read Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship: A Call to Political Responsibility from the Catholic Bishops of the United States (en Español), which provides a framework for Catholics in the United States at Our redemption has a social dimension because God, in Christ, redeems not only the individual person, but also... social relations. To believe that the Holy Spirit is at work in everyone means realizing that he seeks to penetrate every human situation and all social bonds.... ~ Pope Francis ARE YOU NEW TO OUR CHURCH?
