2 A MESSAGE FROM FR. TRUC Gaudete Sunday: Rejoice heartily in the Lord Celebration of Cultural Traditions in our Parish: Our Lady of Guadalupe, La Posada & Simbang Gabi - Filipino Community Dear Parishioners and Friends, This is our House. We are family. This theme will resonate with our parish during the coming weeks and months as we celebrate the many different events in our parish. Last Friday, a small number of our Hispanic parishioners and families put together another year to honor and celebrate Our Lady of Guadalupe. I am thankful for their contributions and effort, especially to Gloria & Ruben Barragan, in making this celebration as a day of joy and faith-filled love. The Year of Consecrated Life Pope Francis Declared As a Church we are grateful for all the religious brothers and sisters throughout the world. This year I invited Sr. Francis Aldama, Missionary Guadalupanas Sisters of the Holy Spirit, to give our reflection during the mass. Her words were inspiring and meaningful. Last week at our Annual Christmas Dinner, we had five religious sisters who were there as guests of Gary & Beverly Herman. I invited each of the Sisters to share the number of years they have spent as a religious. The sum of their religious lives altogher is over 250 years. They are called to live according to the purpose of their foundress order and embrace the vows of poverty, obedience, and chastity. The Meaning of Advent - From Watchfulness to the Way Be watchful of ourselves, Be watchful of others as gatekeeper, Be watchful of God s formation in our lives -- These are the three periods of our journey. Last week, the scriptures invited us to take the next journey that is going from being watchful to the WAY: the way of God, the way of my life, and prepare the WAY of the Lord for others to follow. 1. The Way of the Lord ~ What is the way of the Lord that is meaningful to you and appealing to your understanding? There are so many ways that point to Jesus: how do I know which is real and/or authentic? Are they the commandments to love God and others, to proclaim the Good New of Jesus, to repent and believe in the Gospel? The answer is yes to all of the above, but there are three other descriptions in last Sunday s reading that captured God s ways: Repentance & forgiveness (Mk 1), Holiness & devotion (2Pt 3), Herald of Good News (Is. 40). 2. My Way of Life ~ What is my philosophical way of life: goal or family oriented, money driven, spiritual and contemplative center, or still soul searching for one? Is there a sense of joy and contentment or disappointment and resentment in my way of life? In our journey of faith, is my way of life imitate or reflect the way of God? If not, why? St. Peter presents in his writing a very difficult question that all of us need to reflect as this 2014 year end. What sought of person ought you to be (2Pt. 3)? 3. Prepare the Way of the Lord ~ This next movement is very different and can be challenging that is to prepare others to follow God s way. In leadership & marketing concept there are two theories that are essential to effectiveness and growth: TO LEAD OR TO LAG others either as a manager or a product design. We need to learn and understand the INDICATORS that affect our ways of behaving and strategizing when to lead or lag in our life and in relationship. Am I in SYNC with God s way and allow myself to be in SYNC with others and others to be in SYNC with me? Be informed, Be interested, and Be involved in our CCSV family. God bless and have a prayerful advent season. 3 MORE THAN DISCIPLES WORSHIP, LITURGY & FAITH Each of today's four scriptural roles-- disciple, prophet, apostle, herald--forms a facet of our life in Christ as we live it day by day. Isaiah tells us that a prophet is anointed, as we were anointed at our baptism in water and the Spirit, to bring glad tidings and to promote God's reign of healing, justice, and peace. An apostle, like Paul, is one who is "sent." Each of us, in his or her own way, is sent by Christ to be a voice of rejoicing, to encourage prophetic voices in the world, and to make sure that the work of the Spirit thrives. John the Baptist shows us the job of the herald, making the Lord's way straight, announcing the coming of the Light of the world. Today we also hear from Mary, model disciple. Her song, the Magnificat, shows us the world we must believe in and work for: one in which God is praised, where God's favor is bestowed on the humble, where the hungry are filled and the rich are sent away empty, a world that continues to know and rejoice in the mercy of God that lasts for all ages. J. S. Paluch Co Reflecting on God s Word Certain watchwords are associated with each season of the church year, almost becoming a motto. Advent s is Wake up. It then leads to other words like Watch, Wait, and Witness. But every Third Sunday of Advent, we anticipate the coming Christmas season, whose key word is Rejoice. This Sunday was traditionally called Gaudete ( Rejoice ) Sunday. Priests continue to wear rose-colored vestments today, signaling joy. Joy is not only for Christmastime and the occasional Sunday. I remember as an altar boy, before Vatican II, Mass began with the prayers at the foot of the altar. The priest would begin: I will go up to the altar of God. The server responded: To God who gives joy to my youth, or as some translations had it, To God, my exceeding joy. It was a reminder that God is the source of all joy and that joy is one of the great gifts of God, one of the fruits of the Holy Spirit. St. Paul reminds us that the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control (Galatians 5:22 23). Now there is a good list for Christmas giving. Tell your loved ones your Christmas gift this year will be to pray throughout the coming year that the Spirit will bring them one of these gifts. John s gift to the people who came out into the wilderness was to call them to prepare for the Lord, to give them a sense of heightened anticipation that the One coming to them would fill them with joy. World ibrary publications. Dear God, source and giver of joy, open my heart to receive your joy. As the Advent season continues, help me to live in a spirit of anticipation and watchfulness for how Christ continues to come into the world, a spirit of joy rooted in the awareness that you are faithful to your children. 5 The Season of Advent THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT SCRIPTURE: Philippians 4:4-7 (Reader) "Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone. "The Lord is near. Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your request be made known to God. "And the Peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." REFLECTION (Reader) Joy is at the heart of the journey through Advent to Christmas. Joy in the knowledge of what God has done throughout the ages; joy in the realization that God is able and that God does change things for the better; joy in the assurance that God can enter into our lives no matter what our situation may be. The Apostle Paul calls us a life of rejoicing:.. to live a life full of rejoicing and gentleness.. to put aside worry in the confidence that the Lord is near...to lift our requests in prayer, with thanksgiving.. to trust that the Peace of God will guard our hearts and minds. Let us then consider the condition of joy in our lives. Do worries sometimes seem larger than our belief that God is near? Does the busyness of our lives sometime interfere in our life of prayer? Does anxiety over the big things of the world ruin the little joys of life? Advent is a time when we can clean out the inner stables of our lives so that new life can be born, our spirits may be refreshed, and our lives may be renewed in the joy of salvation. Candle Lighting Liturgy (All) The Lord your God is in your midst, rejoicing over you with gladness, renewing you in love. I will bring you home and restore your fortunes, says the Lord. (Pause) HERE INSTALL THE 2 ADVENT CANDLES. (Please wait until the candles have been lit before reading below.) In this new light we give thanks to the Lord. With joy you will draw waters from the wells of salvation. We will rejoice in the Lord always. We light a third candle to reveal the pathway to faithfulness. (Pause) HERE INSTALL THE 3RD ADVENT CANDLE. (Please wait until the candle has been lit before reading below.) As a covenant people we will seek to live in the joy of the Lord.
