3 WORSHIP, LITURGY & FAITH THE JOURNEY OF TRANSFIGURATION Especially during the Lenten, Holy Week, and Easter seasons, the prayer texts of the Eastern Church revel in paradoxical images of Christ: the eternal life who is put to death, the host of the supper who is also its meal, the thirsty crucified one with living water streaming from his side. These images flow from the evangelists' portrayals of Jesus and from his very ministry, during which he often upset or reversed people's expectations about him or the ways of God. This "reversal" is at play in today's Gospel, as Jesus speaks to an enemy foreigner who is also a woman beneath his status. In addition he, the thirsting one, shows the woman to be the one truly thirsting. He--whose parched lips will say "I thirst" before he dies--is the source of life and life-giving water. Lent calls upon us to dwell on how each of us is thirsting for Christ, and it leads us, ultimately, back to the life-giving waters of our baptism into his Body. Third Sunday of Lent PROVE IT What does it take to convince us of the truth? Some of us need simply to hear from a trusted authority. Others need time to think an argument through for themselves, step by step. Many of us tend to learn the hard way, experiencing life s lessons in dramatic and personal ways. Various kinds of evidence work differently on each of us. For the parched and wandering Israelites, a miraculous source of water persuades them to return to belief in God. For the Samaritan woman, Jesus prophetic knowledge of the intimate details of her life suffices. What will it be for us? What can convince us, forever, that God made us, saved us from death, and treasures us as beloved children? Saint Paul urges us to stop asking for proof; we need look no further than the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. He reminds us how unusual it is for good people to sacrifice themselves for other good people; it is utterly preposterous for a good person to give his life for the ungodly, for sinners. Yet that is precisely what Jesus does for us. LIVE IT Our insatiable need for proof is nothing to be ashamed of. Hunger for evidence points to an active intellect. Even after we learn an important truth, we need to nurture that knowledge throughout our whole lives. Most of us first heard about Jesus when we were children. We must continue to deepen our understanding as we mature. In a similar way, the Samaritans first believe their fellow townswoman simply because of her testimony about Jesus. Then, after encountering him themselves, they are convinced Jesus is the savior of the world: We no longer believe because of your word; for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is truly the savor of the world. Personal experience confirms and deepens their faith. Harden not your hearts, the Psalmist tells us. Let s keep learning from God s signs all around us. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. TEAM encounter Lent CRS RICE BOWL Encounter ourselves. Encounter our neighbors. Encounter our God. Encounter Fernando Week 3: Dignity of Work and the Rights of Workers Catholic social teaching inspires and guides how we are to live and work in the world. In this principle, Dignity of Work and Rights of Workers, we remember that Jesus spent years working as a carpenter. Work is important to help people live good lives, and so people must be paid a fair wage to provide for themselves and their families. Spotlight: El Salvador Activity: 1) Read the story of the Fernando, 2) Say a prayer for the Fernando and the people of El Salvador at mealtime; 3) Try the featured recipe this week from El Salvador: Pupusas with Cheese Reflection: A Church that does not join the poor in order to speak out from the side of the poor against the injustices committed against them is not the true Church of Jesus Christ. Blessed Oscar Romero Prayer: Christ Jesus, We ask that like Blessed Oscar Romero we will not be afraid to risk all that we have to follow you, to stand with the poor and oppressed. May you grant us the same courage you gave Blessed Oscar Romero: That we will feel what we are afraid to feel That we will not be overwhelmed by all that needs to be done but that we will follow you, And trust that you will walk with us on our journey of discipleship, wherever it may lead. May our walk be one of true solidarity As Blessed Oscar Romero s was. And in life and death May we bear much fruit. Amen CRSRICEBOWL.ORG

Forgiveness: Great for the soul, wonderful for the brain. Jesus is the model of forgiveness and asks us to forgive; however this is not always easy! This presentation will provide us with an understanding of the link between unresolved anger and forgiveness. We will study how God has designed our brains to under-stand, process and benefit from forgiveness. It will provide you with powerful new tools to be able to forgive. Dr. Aline Smith has been the Clinical Director of San Martin De Porres Counseling Center, Inc. since In her role, she designs training and instruction to graduate and post-graduate interns in the field of Marriage and Family Therapy, Social Work and Clinical Psychology which will prepare them for licensure in the state of California. She has served as a member of the Board of directors for a number of non-profit agencies, including St. Anne s Maternity Home and the Los Angeles House of Ruth, a shelter for homeless and battered women and children. (Continued on page-4) LECTIO DIVINA FOR THE THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT We begin our prayer: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. May your unfailing compassion, O Lord, cleanse and protect your Church, and, since without you she cannot stand secure, may she be always governed by your grace. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. (Collect, Monday of the Third Week of Lent) READING (Lectio): JOHN 4:5-15, 19B-26, 39A, (Read the scripture two or three times) MEDITATION (Meditatio): After the reading, take some time to reflect in silence on one or more of the following questions: (1) What word or words in this passage caught your attention? (2) What in this passage comforted you? (3) What in this passage challenged you? (If practicing lectio divina as a family or in a group, after the reflection time, invite the participants to share their responses.) CONTEMPLATION (Contemplatio): Read the scripture passage again, followed by this reflection: How does this passage connect with the experience of your daily life? Give me a drink. For what do I thirst? How do I experience the need for God? In what ways can I help to share God s love with those who thirst for his presence? Those who worship him must worship in Spirit and truth. In what ways does the public worship of the Church (especially the Mass) strengthen my faith in and love for God? How does this worship call me to transform my life to follow the truth of Christ? We no longer believe because of your word; for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is truly the savior of the world. What people, practices, readings, etc. help to strengthen my faith? What can I do this week to share my faith with others? PRAYER (ORATIO): Read the scripture passage one more time. Bring to the Lord the praise, petition, or thanksgiving that the Word inspires in you. After all have had a chance to make their prayer, all recite the Lord s Prayer and the following: CLOSING PRAYER: I am honored in the sight of the Lord, and my God is now my strength! It is too little, he says, for you to be my servant, to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and restore the survivors of Israel; I will make you a light to the nations, that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth.
