2 And his commandment is this: we should believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and love one another just as he commanded us. (1 Jn. 3). Dear Parishioners and Guests: Happy Easter! The joy of Christ s resurrec on is the heart of our Chris an faith. There is so much joy and hope in life because of Christ s redemp ve act. The End of the Vietnam War 40 Year Reflec on Last Thursday (April 30), I and other Vietnamese living outside of Vietnam remembered the Fall of Saigon or the end of the Vietnam War. Time has passed by since my childhood growing up in Vietnam. This 40 th year from 1975 to 2015 has allowed me to recall who I am as Vietnamese and Vietnamese American. For Vietnamese diaspora looking back, there are mixed emo ons: sadness, death, anger, fears or distraught. The words joy, happiness, and excitement never entered in our minds as we escape Vietnam from communism especially during a period from1975 to I am grateful to God s love, protec on and care. I am forever thankful to all Americans who helped or are helping the Vietnamese people to adapt to the American way of life and dreams. These forty years have been life-changing and life-giving events, and the outcomes have truly been a miracle. Finding a Purpose Driven Life Using Pastor Rick Warren Last Sunday, I shared with you in my homily by reflec ng on the word Purpose. What is your purpose, my purpose, and our purpose in life? Some people want to bring about peace, cure people, or teach others to learn how to read and write. Having a purpose in life gives each one of us a sense of direc on. To have a purpose in life is only the beginning. To know and understand what will inspire or drive you and me to fulfill that purpose is vitally important. I quoted Pastor Rick Warren from Saddleback church based on his book A Purpose Driven Life. He iden fies 5 areas: worship, fellowship, discipleship, service, and mission. Based on the reading last Sunday, I focused on three reasons for us as Catholic Chris ans to embrace this purpose driven life: (a) Jesus is our Cornerstone in Acts. (b) We are God s Beloved Children. (c) Jesus is the Shepherd. REVERENCE FOR LIFE - END OF LIFE: CATHOLICS FIGHT AGAINST SB 128 Ethicist and Psychiatrist Tes fies on the Problems of Assisted Suicide - Part 2 of 3 1. Physician-assisted suicide introduces discriminatory prac ces into medicine, undermines equal protec on for all pa ents, and weakens necessary efforts aimed at suicide preven on. If there exists a right to assisted suicide, why would it be restricted only to those in the throes of terminal illness? Once we adopt the principle that suicide is acceptable, then the fences we might try to erect around it having six months to live, or having mental capacity, for example are inevitably arbitrary. These restric ons will eventually be abandoned, as the situa on with assisted suicide in Belgium and the Netherlands demonstrates. The experiences here are instruc ve as these countries have longer experience with this than Oregon or Washington. In Belgium assisted suicide has been granted to a man with untreatable depression, and to a prisoner suffering psychological anguish due to his imprisonment; in the Netherlands, it has been granted to a woman because she did not want to live in a nursing home. 2. We see here not only a prac cal slippery slope that restric ons will be difficult to enforce or monitor; more than this, there is a relentlessly logical slippery slope because once we adopt the supposed right to assisted suicide, restric ons are seen as groundless and are eventually abandoned. Suicide is now a public health crisis: alarmingly, it is now the 3rd leading cause of death among adolescents and young adults. We know that suicide is typically an impulsive and ambivalent act. A journalist tracked down the few dozen individuals who survived jumping from the Golden Gate Bridge, and asked them what was going through their minds in the four seconds between jumping and hi ng the water. Every one of them responded that they regre ed the decision to jump, with one saying, I realized that all the problems in my life that I thought were unsolvable were actually solvable except for having just jumped. Those who work in pallia ve care will confirm: when a terminally ill person professes that they want to die, it is a cry for help. When comfort or relief is offered, in the form of more adequate treatment for depression, be er pain management, or more comprehensive pallia ve care, the desire for suicide vanishes. Nearly 90% of suicides are associated with clinical depression or other treatable mental disorders, including for individuals at the end-oflife. Yet alarmingly, less than 6% of the individuals who have died by assisted suicide under Oregon s law were referred for psychiatric evalua on. Similarly, SB 128 does not require physicians to refer for psychiatric consulta on to rule-out common mental disorders that contribute to suicidal thinking. Based on what we know about suicide risk factors, this cons tutes gross medical negligence. Suicide comple on generally requires not just intent (which typically waxes and wanes over me) but also easy access to means. Suicidal individuals tend to fixate on one specific suicide plan. If that par cular means isn t readily available, they typically choose to live.[i] I had this experience recently with a 79-year-old pa ent who requested physician assisted suicide: he gave up on his suicidal plan en rely when he discovered that neither I nor my colleagues at UC Irvine would provide this for him. (To be con nued ) I encourage you to log on to our website or to this link to educate yourself concerning the End of Life. Please do not say we don t know or did not yet understand when we have to cast our individual ballot as Catholics. 3 BEARING FRUIT WORSHIP, LITURGY & FAITH "Children, let us love not in word or speech but in deed and truth." John's words come to us on this day when the Gospel passage presents us with the great image of the vine and the branches. Jesus uses the image as a warning to those who have begun to distance themselves from the way of the Lord. One of the ways this happens is when we love God and others "in word or speech" instead of "in deed and truth." What does it mean for us to "remain in Christ"? In an extension of the metaphor, the Lord gives us an example. If we remain in him, we will bear much fruit. As the branches, we draw strength from Christ who is the vine. This strength enables us to bear fruit--to do the work of true discipleship. J. S. Paluch Co. Beatitudes Blessed are the meek for they will inherit the land. Christian meekness is not weakness, nor a person lacking courage. Moses was praised for being meek and Jesus described himself as meek. To be meek is to be humble, gentle, and patient, especially in the face of distress provocation, and injustice. It is renunciation of power, earthly glory, and control by being willing to let go of it, when this is done the doors are opened to the divine life. When one yields their will to God s will we learn that this life is not about us. Our purpose is to do God s will. We have been put here on earth at this place and time for a reason. We become a useful tool in the hands of God. Through God we can achieve wonderful things for his glory. Through Baptism was have been reborn in to the family of God. We belong to him and he created and dominates the earth. As his children and Christ s heirs we inherit the earth and the universal kingdom. He has established on earth to lead the nations in to the family of Godthe Catholic (universal) Church Month of Devo on to Mary In honor of our Blessed Virgin Mary, let us pray the Rosary! Glossary of Vocation Terms {continued from last week} CONTEMPLATIVE Members of the contemplative religious communities focus on daily prayer, especially the Mass, the Liturgy of the Hours, and individual prayer. They tend to love in greater solitude and work toward contemplation, though some communities that consider themselves contemplative are also engaged in apostolic ministers. SEMI-CLOISTERED/ CLOISTERED Often, contemplative religious communities are cloistered or partially cloistered. That is, they live separated from the outside world and focus on prayer, including prayer for the needs of the world. As cloistered religious, they are rarely leave their monasteries, and all or most their work is done within the monastery.
