2 A MESSAGE FROM FR. TRUC BE ON TIME Coming to Sunday Mass: 75% Goal for Our Parish; Excep on for those who are sick or re red and required more me! Brothers and sisters: [Jesus] "for a little while" was made "lower than the angels, " that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. (Hebrew Mk. 2). Dear Parishioners and Ministers: Pope Francis has left a tremendous impact and a wonderful imprint in our memories. His remarks in Washington, New York, and Philadelphia continue to echo at all levels of our conversations among friends, families, colleagues at work, parishioners, and politicians. During Pope Francis speech at the United Nations where he spoke in Spanish, he reflected three beautiful words that resonate dwith me and with a lot of people: (a) Techo A roof over our heads; (b) Trabajo Work or jobs to support our families and the economy; (c) Tierra Land for us to live and feel secure. Giving the Invocation to the Board of Supervisors of Los Angeles County This past Tuesday, I was invited to give the invocation for the regular weekly meeting of the Board of Supervisors of Los Angeles County, which is divided into 5 major districts and represented all the cities of the county. Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas of the Second District invited me. I learned a lot about the structures of the county as I was preparing for the invocation. I met Michael D. Antonovich, who is Catholic and represents the Fifth District. During the prayers, I also quoted Pope Francis and I said the following: The world tells us to seek SUCCESS, POWER, AND MONEY; GOD tells us to seek HUMILITY, SERVICE, AND LOVE. May their collaborative spirit bind them together in respect, dignity and service, gather all our cities among the five districts together now and in the future. Give us all the grace to look beyond all divisions, but while we look to the future let us not forget the past. The Church s Patio Construction Seeking for Some Financial Relief of $35,000 This week, I come to you again asking for your financial support. In order to be in compliance with the building code of the City of Los Angeles, we are required to construct a new firewall to separate the church from the room adjacent to the church. Second, the patio cover has to be eight feet (8 ft.) away from the parish office. The four posts supporting the patio have to be redone. This project ordeal has been on-going for more than 3 years. As of today, the accumulated cost has been very expensive, which is approximately more than $35,000 ranging from architectural and engineering fees, city permits, and production costs. If you are able to assist and defray some of the cost of this project, I would be greatly appreciative for your support. Any amount is acceptable. Infusion of the Spirit and Inspiration Last Sunday I reflected on the meaning of the phrase infusion of the Spirit and give a brief contrast with the word inspiration. Inspiration of the Spirit occurs over a period of time through God s revelation and/or for a special purpose. For example, the four Gospel writers were inspired by the Holy Spirit to write down the teachings of Jesus. Infusion of the Spirit is given to all people especially during the sacrament of baptism. We are infused by the virtues of God permanently; the two traditional understandings of this infusion of the Spirit are the two virtues: 1. Theological Virtues of Faith-Hope-and Love 2. Cardinal Virtues: Prudence, Temperance, Fortitude, and Justice. May you and your family be well always and under the guidance and protection of God. Be informed, be interested, and be involved in our Catholic faith. Much of scripture shows us how to do this as it illustrates and clarifies God s plans. The readings this wneekend guide us in the value and care of our relationships. Specifically, the Gospel focuses on the circumstances of failed relationships. Unlike the Pharisees, we would do well not to focus on the laws that pertain to failed relationships, but concentrate instead on what God really intended for us. Healthy bonds require a lot of our time and energy. They certainly require trust and honesty. Jesus demonstrated a deep commitment to his friends and to us. As our brother, he gave his very life for us. Children work hard at friendships. They trust, forgive, and love without conditions. Treasures from our tradition Using beads for prayer and meditation is an ancient custom, found in many cultures and religions. The Christian rosary dates from the twelfth century, when it provided a way for ordinary Christians to learn about the lives of Jesus and Mary. Alan de la Roche, a fifteenthcentury Dominican, preferred "Psalter of Our Lady" to "rosary." This fitting name recalls an explanation of the devotion's origin. Unable to read the one hundred fifty psalms that formed the Church's "official" daily prayer, medieval Christians substituted first one hundred fifty Pater Nosters, and later one hundred fifty Ave Marias. By meditating on the various mysteries of the rosary while repeating these simple prayers, the faithful could immerse themselves in the whole mystery of the Incarnation and the Resurrection. The dedication of October to the Blessed Virgin Mary is an appropriate reminder of this venerable form of prayer. Faithful Christians everywhere continue to meditate on the mysteries of the rosary, praying in groups or alone. Why not take advantage of this season to renew your acquaintance with the rosary? God is always inviting us to a joyful life of selfless generosity. Everyday is a new day to reflect upon and pray, to grow in generosity in many different areas. You can make it different this year by really taking some time over these next few days to ask yourself this question: How much do you have? Most of us have enough to be generous. Think about and calculate what you gave to your church, charities and people in need last year as a percentage of your annual income. Once you have the number, pray and challenge yourself to increase the percentage of your giving. Goals bring out the best in us.
