2 YEAR OF FAITH: SAINT OF THE MONTH M C, V M Z The story of St. Frances (Xavier) Cabrini is the story, not only of every missionary, but of every Chris an. It is not what she accomplished, or how far she traveled that made her a great missionary saint. It was how she allowed God to accomplish remarkable achievements in and through her. Her immense love of God empowered her to reach out to the poor, the needy and the immigrants. 1 Maria Francesca Cabrini was born in northern Italy, on July l5, Born two months prematurely she was in delicate health all her life. As a young girl, she listened as her father read stories to the family about great missionaries. Frances knew then that she wanted to become a missionary and help the poor and less fortunate. She took religious vows in 1877 and added Xavier to her name in tribute to St. Francis Xavier. Named superior of her religious community, she was now known as Mother Frances Xavier Cabrini. With the six women who had taken religious vows with her, Mother Cabrini founded the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (M.S.C.) in The congrega on established seven homes and a free school and nursery in its first five years and brought Mother Cabrini to the a en on of the bishop of Piacenza and of Pope Leo XIII. Mother Cabrini sought approval from the Pope to establish missions in China. "Not to the East, but to the West" was the pope s advice, sugges ng that she go to the United States to help the flood of Italian immigrants mostly in great poverty. The beginnings in America were difficult; a new world, another culture, without contacts, and not knowing the language. Yet soon as the sisters arrived in New York in 1889, Mother Cabrini set out to start her mission. On Palm Sunday of 1890, an orphanage for Italian children was inaugurated. A free school was established in the Lower East Side of Manha an, where the poorest Italians lived. All the while, the sisters constantly traversed the streets of the Italian district, teaching catechism, visi ng families, trying to help and guide them, and bringing God nearer to them. To support themselves and the orphanage, they had to beg for alms because the dona ons were not enough to support the growing number of orphans. Mother Cabrini founded a larger orphanage in West Park, on the banks of the Hudson River. It was an ideal, healthful site for the orphans and for the North American novi ate which opened in The land was owned by the Jesuits who sold it at a very low price because it lacked sufficient water. However, to the surprise of the Jesuits, the ever resourceful Cabrini soon discovered an underground spring on the property that provided ample water. In 1892, at Mother Cabrini s direc on, her Missionary Sisters traveled to New Orleans and quickly established a school and an orphanage in Li le Palermo an Italian enclave of the French Quarter. Back in New York, the Italian immigrants needed hospitals. Archbishop Corrigan begged Mother Cabrini to take on hospital work but care of the sick was not on Mother Cabrini s list. But then she had a dream where she saw the Blessed Virgin Mary tending to a hospital pa ent. Cabrini asked the Virgin Mary what she was doing; the Blessed Virgin Mary responded, I am doing the work you refuse to do. Mother Cabrini moved quickly to establish a hospital for the Italian sick poor in New York City.. New to this work, the sisters turned out to be excellent healthcare providers and administrators. Cabrini later went on to establish other hospitals in Chicago and Sea le. The Missionaries of the Sacred Heart of Jesus had been in America only two years but Mother Cabrini s mission took her beyond American shores: Nicaragua, Buenos Aires, Argen na, Paris, London, and Madrid. At the turn of the 20th century, Mother Cabrini expanded horizons in the United States: Chicago, Scranton, Pennsylvania, Newark, New Jersey, Rocky Mountains of Colorado, and Sea le. She looked for solu ons which would afford her the means to subsidize free schools. In Dobbs Ferry, New York, she founded Sacred Heart Villa, a school for daughters of now well to do Italian families who paid tui on, monies which in turn were u lized to fund the free schools. She extended her educa onal and childcare missions to California where there were se lements of Italian as well as Mexican immigrants, establishing a school, an orphanage, and a place for tubercular children. In the United States, her religious order became a model of social ac on. Her outlook on life was summed up when she said: If it is possible, it can be done. If it is impossible, it must be done. Mother Cabrini was naturalized as a United States ci zen in Her last mission was helping the orphan children in Chicago. where she died on December 22, She was missions of the Ins tute had been established, ministries of healing, teaching, caring, giving and reaching out, in ci es of the United States, Italy, France, England, Spain, Brazil, Argen na, and Nicaragua. She was the first American ci zen to be canonized as a saint. Pope Pius XII celebrated her canoniza on in Chicago's Soldier Field on July 7, And, on September 8, 1950, Pope Pius XII also declared Mother Cabrini as the "Heavenly Patroness of all Emigrants" (and also of displaced persons). He described her as an "extraordinary woman...whose courage and ability were like a shining light." 2 Source:h p//mothercabrini.org/legacy/life3.asp; 1 h p:// legacy/legac.asp; 2 Catholic Informa on Network (CIN) Home Page, 1996 WEEK OF DECEMBER 1 7, 2013 SAINTS, SPECIAL OBSERVANCES, MASS INTENTIONS AND PARISH EVENTS SUNDAY, DECEMBER 1: First Sunday of Advent 8:00 Julian Inga 10:00 Lucille & Sig Herman 11:15 NO Confirmation Classes 12:00p For All Our Parishioners 1:00p Confession* MONDAY, DECEMBER 2: 9:00 Nicholas Baran TUESDAY, DECEMBER 3: St. Francis Xavier 9:00 Elka Leiva 10:30 School Penance Service WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 4: St. John Damascene 9:00 The Living & Deceased Members of the Lathrop Family; Archie Bobis 3:45p First Communion Classes 6:30p OLP Novena THURSDAY, DECEMBER 5 10:00 Alan Roché 7:00p Finance Council Meeting FRIDAY, DECEMBER 6: St. Nicholas; FIRST FRIDAY 9:00 John & Mary Tran; Anointing of the Sick 9:30- ADORATION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT (until 6:30pm) SATURDAY, DECEMBER 7: St. Ambrose; First Saturday 8:30 Cynthia Lathrop 9:30 MINISTERS ADVENT DAY OF PRAYER with Light Reception 2:30p Sacrament of Marriage 5:00p Joseph Nguyen PARISH ADMINISTRATION Rev. 3 WORSHIP, LITURGY & FAITH GETTING READY Today marks the beginning of another liturgical year. The tone of today s readings casts us in the role of students learning solemn lessons. The reading from Isaiah sets the stage, calling us up a mountain to receive the Lord s instruction. In this passage we study peace. Then Paul steps forth with sober admonitions. We have to wake up; the day is almost here. Live honorably in the light. Paul reminds us that we really do know the time in which we are living. Finally, Matthew presents Jesus the storyteller. Just imagine, Jesus tells us, what it was like in Noah s time. He paints a vivid picture of ordinary people living ordinary lives and ignoring the warnings that Noah heeded. Totally unconcerned, they were destroyed. How will it be any different for us? No one knows when the Lord will come. But we have been warned. Perhaps we find such sobering scriptures unappealing and threatening. But within them there is promise. We are to live in the light with nothing to hide. We are to be ready. JS PALUCH What will it mean for you to walk in the light of the Lord this Advent? Will it mean changing an aspect of your life that is darkened by sin, or no cing and allevia ng some of the suffering in our world? World Library Publica ons Reflecting On God s Word "O come, O come, Emmanuel, and ransom captive Israel!" So begins the familiar chant that will be heard in churches throughout the world this Advent. It is based on the O Antiphons, which are the verses for the Gospel acclamation at Mass on the last seven days of Advent. Each of those antiphons prays for the coming of Christ, and each one seems to capture the spirit of a different Sunday of Advent. The verse that harmonizes with this Sunday's scriptures expresses our longing for the "Radiant Dawn" of the Lord's coming at the end of time when the "sun of justice" will "shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death." In the readings we hear Isaiah describe the peaceful "days to come," when all will "walk in the light of the Lord!" (Isaiah 2:2, 5). Paul tells us it is time "to awake from sleep" and "put on the armor of light" for "the day is at hand" (Romans 13:11, 13, 12). Jesus, too, cautions us to "stay awake" to be ready for the "day your Lord will come" (Matthew 24:42). All around us we seem to be getting a similar message: "No time to waste! Only thirty shopping days left till Christmas! Don't be caught unprepared!" What's the difference between the two messages? One tells us to anticipate a day of giving and getting and eating and drinking. We might prepare for that day by rushing and buying and wrapping and baking. The other tells us to anticipate a day, not of avarice and jealousy, but of justice for the oppressed and peace on earth. We will prepare for that day when we "throw off the works of darkness" and "put on the Lord Jesus Christ." Virginia Stillwell Mother Cabrini Prayer Feast Day, November 13 Heart of Jesus, we thank you for this opportunity as a Cabrinian Family to prepare together for the feast of your missionary servant Francesca Cabrini. We desire, during this time of preparation, to understand those aspects of her charism and mission that are part of your on-going plan for each one of us. During these days, open our minds, stretch our hearts, fire our imagination and energize our will with the many faces that Francesca presents to the world today. Show us the way her charism can take root in our daily life so that we may arrive at her Feast, converted and empowered in heart, mind and will, ready to begin a year of Cabrinian greatness of heart on behalf of those with whom we live, work and meet. We ask this in the name of the Father and in the power of the Spirit. Amen. h p:// Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Monday, Dec. 9th ~, Is Not A Holy Day of Obligation, however, we are going to celebrate Masses in her honor at 9:00am and 6:30pm.

Rela onal bullying is unwarranted, persistent, unwelcome behavior in the form of cri cism, isola on, or fabricated allega ons that can damage rela onships. Examples include social exclusion ( You can t be with us ), spreading rumors ( Did you hear?), and withholding friendship ( I won t be your friend if you ). Though rela onal bullying can o en seem ambiguous to outside observers and o en garners less a en on than physical bullying or verbal bullying, it should not be discounted simply as normal, adolescent behavior. In fact, several recent studies suggest rela onal bullying is more strongly related to emo onal distress and teen depression than any other form of bullying. Make sure your child s school does not tolerate such behavior among its students. WELCOME TO OUR PARISH!
