Dear Parishioners and Visitors: Welcome to our church on this second Sunday of the New Year. The feast of the Three Kings marks the final Sunday of the Christmas season. May your time of prayers and celebration of the Holy Eucharist bring solace and peace to your spirit and renew your faith in Jesus Christ. May the New Year 2017 bring you joy and blessed health. From the Book of Numbers in today s first reading, I wish you the following: [May] the LORD bless you and keep you! [May] the LORD let his face shine upon you, and be gracious to you! [May] the LORD look upon you kindly and give you peace! Gratitude to All Parishioners & Benefactors during the Christmas season with decorations and cleaning We are the ecclesia or a community of the faithful because of the many members to gave their time, talents and treasures to support the mission of Christ and the ministries of our parish. We empower to SERVE and to WORSHIP through faith, hope, and charity. Throughout the years and this coming year 2017, our church environment, cleanliness, and liturgically fitting with the seasons, do not just happen by themselves. There are a number of self-sacrificing and dedicated volunteers who gave so much of their time and their generosity. The flowers and plants (the orchids and others arrangements) donated by an anonymous donor worth in the range of $5000 to $7000 a year. Dolly is the quiet leader with Vickie, Suzette, and Elsie who are the key team. Rick, Edmond, Jimmy, Ryan and Mike are the key men who do so much of the physical work of the environment. They and many volunteers gave thousands of hours to our church getting ready for Sunday celebrations and festivities. Mary as the Mother of God: Continuity in Life Continuity in life provides some sense of stability and consistency. Without this continuity in politics, companies, and families, chaos and crisis could be the consequences. Christmas Day: Connection in Relationship We need to stay connected with Jesus Humanity, Jesus Heart, and Jesus Humility. Living life is not about how many friends we have on Facebook or how many followers we have on Twitter. Fourth Sunday of Advent - Normal / Challenging / Extreme Circumstances How a person deal with the different circumstances of our lives especially the extreme ones can shape who we are as a person? Three possible solutions: 1) Existential solution: the problem is outside of our control (natural disasters). 2) Cognitive solution: our mind must be clear in thinking and not to be subjective. 3) Behavioral solution: our healthy way of living, habits or addiction must stop. Third Sunday of Advent - Confidence Building and rebuilding confidence can be a long and difficult journey for some. Amy Morin suggested five points in gaining and strengthening confidence: 1. Acknowledge Your Strengths 2. Share Your Passions With Others 3. Address Your Self-Doubt 4. Give Yourself Permission to Play 5. Accept Compliments Gracefully Second Sunday - Clear Thinking & Clear Vision: Stability, Gifts of the Spirit a) Clear Thinking: We may need time for stillness just as Lao Tzu wrote: Muddy water, let stand - becomes clear. b) Clear Vision: Perspective view of a person can change a person s point of view - such as sitting down, standing up eye to eye, and standing on a hilltop. First Sunday of Advent Reflection - To Come To: Listen and Observe To come to Jesus and to members of our families and friends may signal certain emotions of readiness or resistance in us. 3 WORSHIP, LITURGY & FAITH THE STAR OF BETHLEHEM The unfolding of the story of the Incarnation continues today as the Church celebrates the Epiphany. The tale of the magi from the East is one of the most fascinating in all of scripture. It has much to teach us about what we can come to expect, even in circumstances and places that may seem insignificant or small. Bethlehem was a tiny town, what we might refer to today as a town without even one stop light. Yet it is over this seemingly insignificant place that the guiding star stops in its own search for the place where the Savior would be born. Too often we fail to recognize the fact that the star of Bethlehem comes to rest in our everyday lives, where we can experience God's presence, manifested in ever new ways. Epiphany calls us to shake off our stupor and recognize the One who comes to save us. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. The Epiphany of the Lord In today's readings we hear again about the light from the star that first led shepherds and now kings to the baby Jesus. Isaiah and the psalm describe a life lived in the light of promise and peace. Matthew tells not only of the light but also of evil. Herod, who meets the magi on their way to see Jesus, lies. He pretends to be someone he is not. He pretends to believe in the power of this child. The struggle between truth and falsehood, between light and dark begins again. The magi are not deceived and the family is saved, but the threat that this child represents to the established order is clear. The Epiphany makes known the promise that this child, our Savior, is for the whole world, a promise that restores light to a world darkened by evil. LIFE IN THE DARK In Isaiah, we rejoice because a light has come to challenge the darkness that covers the earth. This light draws all to itself, kings and shepherds, daughters and sons. The psalm describes the wonder of life lived within the light: justice and peace flower, the poor are rescued, the afflicted are helped, and the lives of the lowly are saved. In Ephesians we are reminded that we are co-heirs of the promise, of the light, that is Jesus our Savior. But Matthew tells the rest of the story. There is opposition to the light and it is deadly. The magi are led by the light from a star, but when they encounter Herod, the light is lost to them. Herod lies to them about his intentions regarding this new king. The light returns only when the magi leave Herod. They reach the new king, a baby, and are warned to return along a way that avoids Herod, his lies and his evil intentions. They and the child are saved, but many will suffer because of the evil that lies within Herod. LIFE IN THE LIGHT Today we are reminded that there is darkness in the world. There is evil. Herod is concerned with protecting his position and his power. Jesus is concerned about protecting the poor and the powerless. Evil disguises itself as good. Jesus offers himself with no disguise or pretense. Evil always puts its self-interest first. Jesus always puts the poor, the afflicted, and the lowly first. The holidays are over and we return to Ordinary Time. We return to our ordinary lives. This is the most important time because it is during these ordinary days that we strengthen our understanding of the good, of Jesus, and our resolve to do good in a world where evil often seems too powerful.
