Dear Parishioners and Visitors: I welcome those who may be visiting our parish this weekend to be with your family, especially with your father. Father s Day is a great reason for us to recognize our natural, adopted, or stepfather because of all the sacrifices and in his unique ways of expressing his love and affection toward his children. Living & Deceased Fathers - We Honor & Pray Commitment, responsible, protector, hard-worker are some of the characteristics of a father. We give thanks to God for all living fathers. May we as their children show greater respect toward them as they are getting older, moving slower, and talking, hearing becomes more difficult for them. Each day that they are alive is a gift of life and relationship. In spite of our busy schedules and daily responsibilities, please make time to spend a few hours with them during the week, especially for those of us who have our own lives and our own families to tend to. We pause this day too to pray and remember all fathers who have died in the peace of Christ. Some of us will visit the cemetery, say a little prayer, share a few memories, and shed a few tears. May the pictures of your father on the wall, in the living room, on your facebook or in your workspace bring a smile to you and remind you the precious gift of life. Assisted-Suicide Safeguards Begin Crumbling in Oregon - Part 1 of 3 April 30, 2015 Oregon's first-in-the-nation law empowers doctors to give life-ending drugs to people if they are judged to be within six months of death. Oregon's law is widely used as the standard for similar measures proposed this year in at least 20 states. Barely noticed, however, is the desire of a key Oregon physician-assisted suicide legislator to double the "likely-to-die" window for death medicine to a full year. The chair of Oregon's House Health Care Committee, Rep. Mitch Greenlick introduced HB 3337 which would widen the end-of-life expectation enabling physicians to assist in suicide. Current Oregon law says a person must be judged likely to die within six months in order to be prescribed suicide medicine. HB 3337 would double the "likely-to-die" threshold for prescribing death medication to a full year. Greenlick asserts that people with ALS, commonly known as Lou Gehrig s disease, need more time to end their lives. "By the time you get within six months, you often don't have the manual dexterity to swallow a pill or even still have the reflex to swallow," asserted Greenlick. He is a retired health researcher. But the ALS Association's Lance Christian told media that the sixmonth limit in current Oregon law has not been an issue. Christian said that he had helped several ALS patients end their lives under Oregon's existing sixmonth window. So far Greenlick has not moved his bill forward to a hearing. An indication of the challenge facing assisted suicide advocates was Oregon ALS patient Thomas Middleton, who set up a trust with realtor Tami Sawyer. Middleton moved into her home in Less than a month later Middleton died under the Oregon assisted suicide law. Two days after his death Sawyer sold Middleton's home and pocketed $200,000. She later pleaded guilty to charges of bilking several people and in 2013 was sent to prison. THE WIND AND THE SEA On Living along the shores of Lake Superior--the "big lake," as the locals call it--you can often hear the advice, "Respect the lake; don't take it for granted.

The readings of this Sunday evoke our memories of the lake, of the mighty Mississippi River, or of the ocean itself.

Summer may also mean anticipated excitement and adventure exploring new places or trying new things.

However, the busyness of mornings and preparations for summer outings of even the well-intentioned pray-ers can cause prayer time to become lost in the commotion.

The lake described in today's Gospel was a body of water subject to sudden storms and churned into dangerous waves by terrible winds. But these mighty agents are subject to God.

Keeping Summer Prayerful ~ Just the thought of summer fast approaching might bring thoughts of rest and relaxation to mind. We may recall the lazy days of summer during our youth. Summer may also mean anticipated excitement and adventure exploring new places or trying new things. A key strategy to help us remain prayerful this summer is to begin each day with prayer no matter what. This simple suggestion may seem like a no-brainer to a praying individual. However, the busyness of mornings and preparations for summer outings of even the well-intentioned pray-ers can cause prayer time to become lost in the commotion. Getting on our knees when we face each new day and giving it right WORSHIP, LITURGY & FAITH Who but God can control these mighty waters and set limits to their advance? A morning offering in our own words or a more formal version and a prayer to our Guardian Angel at the breakfast table works very well with our captive hungry audience! We can offer our hearts to God all throughout our days as well. Teaching our children to begin their days with prayer is an invaluable lesson that will surely remain with them as they grow older and begin to navigate life on their own.
