2 No one can say, Jesus is Lord, except by the Holy Spirit To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit (1Cor. 12). Dear Parishioners and Visitors: Come, Holy Spirit! Come God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, fill us with your love and your grace. This Sunday our Church is recognizing is a unique way the identity of the Third Person of God, the Holy Spirit. Memorial weekend is also an important occasion for all of us to pause in silence and commemorate all of our men and women in the arm forces, police officers, firefighter or members of other agencies that died for our country. These heroic people sacrificed their life to the point of death so that we may find peace and security in our everyday lives. CongratulationS to our Confirmation Candidates & Thankful to Sr. Anna Tom and the Catechists for both First Communion and Confirmation Programs This Sunday at the 12pm mass, Bishop Clark is confirming our young people as they receive the fullness of God s Seven Gifts of the Spirit: 1. Wisdom: knowing the right choices to make to live a holy life. 2. Understanding: helping to be tolerant and sympathetic of others. 3. Right Judgment (Counsel): the gift of prudence. 4. Courage (Fortitude): helping you stand up for your faith in Christ. 5. Knowledge: enabling you to choose the right path that will lead you to God. 6. Reverence (Piety): confidence in & inspiring you to serve God. 7. Wonder and Awe (Fear of the Lord): moving you to love God & not offending him. I am thankful also for the leadership of Sr. Anna and the participation of the catechists each week giving your time and love evangelizing the faith of our youth. Their efforts and creativity have brought joy to the faith of our children and encourage our young people to become more Christ like as they mature in life. Reverence for Life - End of Life: Catholics Fight Against SB 128 The opposition to legalizing physician-assisted suicide (SB 128) is gaining momentum as Senators on both sides of the aisle are increasingly questioning the wisdom of this dangerous legislation. A key moment in the debate is fast approaching, as SB 128 can reach the Senate Floor at any time before June 5. As the vote nears, your Senator needs to hear from you, a constituent, that you do not support physician-assisted suicide and to vote NO on SB 128. This legislation is being vigorously opposed by a diverse group of organizations representing doctors, people with disabilities, faith-based organizations, hospitals, hospice, minorities, the poor and the uninsured. Catholic social teaching tells us that we are created in the image of God; therefore, we hold life to be sacred from conception to natural death. We believe that we are stewards not owners of our lives. As such, the California Catholic Conference remains steadfast in our opposition to assisted suicide and any attempts to legalize it, and therefore, strongly opposes SB 128. Assisted suicide represents misguided public policy, which would have numerous detrimental implications for vulnerable people and impact our society negatively. Please ask your Senator to vote NO on SB 128. I encourage you to log on to our website or to this link to educate yourself concerning the End of Life. Please do not say we don t know or did not yet understand when we have to cast our individual ballot as Catholics. Be Informed of your Faith! Be Interest in Our Community and Church! Be Involved and make a difference. Have a blessed week ahead in God s love and protection. Are you new to our church? YOU are always welcome here! Our parish is a Catholic community of diverse cultures and experiences. Our Masses, devotions, sacraments and ministries allow our members to live the Gospel and to enrich their lives through prayer and community fellowship. We welcome and embrace all because this is our house, we are one family! Please take a moment to get to know our parish by visiting our website: cathedralchapel.org. 3 A SIGNIFICANT DAY WORSHIP, LITURGY & FAITH "And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were" (Acts 2:2). The Holy Spirit's arrival on that first Pentecost was signaled by a rush of wind. We all know what it's like when our windows are open just as a summer storm rises up. Curtains fly, papers become airborne, house plants shudder, dust is scattered. A rush of wind disrupts the orderliness of our home. The coming of the Holy Spirit, as celebrated each year at Pentecost, can also disrupt ways that have become comfortable and orderly. The Church always needs Pentecost. We need the breath of God's Spirit to blow away any complacency or malaise that has settled into our faith. Jesus breathes on his disciples and they receive the Holy Spirit. With that reception comes the power to share the Good News of salvation. Today, this is no less true for us. J. S. Paluch Co. GOD S WORD TODAY What marvelous imagery Pentecost offers us: peals of thunder and flashes of lightning, mountains wrapped in smoke, violent earth tremors, trumpet blasts, rivers of living water, strong driving winds, tongues of flame. All of these images signal the presence of the Holy Spirit. Our fifty-day celebration of Easter culminates on this day when we remember with vigor the inrushing of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples. As we listen to the words of scripture today, let us open our hearts to a renewal within ourselves and within the entire Church. Let us pray that the Spirit will take hold in us and strengthen us on our mission to bring food to the hungry, shelter to the homeless, and justice to those who are oppressed. Veni Sancte Spiritus! Come, Holy Spirit! J. S. Paluch Co CONSECRATED LIFE THROUGH THE AGES A.D Letters of Saint Paul Refer to distinct groupings in the early church, including groups of celibate women dedicated to prayer and charity. A.D Persecution of Christians In 313 Roman Emperor Constantine issues the Edict of Toleration. Christians seek ways other than martyrdom to give themselves completely to the faith. A.D St Anthony the Great heeds the gospel call to sell all he has, serve the poor, and live a life of asceticism. He eventually takes up residence in the desert to live in solutide and prayer. His story is recoded by St. Athanasius, bishop of Alexandria, and becomes a fourth century bestseller that inspires other men and women to live as hermits. (to be continued next week.) I saw the snares that the enemy spreads out over the world and I said groaning, What can get through from such snares? Then I heard a voice saying to me, Humility. St. Anthony Religious orders are not formed for the purpose of gathering together perfect people but those who have the courage to aim at perfec on.~ Saint Francis de Sales

4 PARISH & SCHOOL LIFE: MINISTRY, EVENTS & REMINDERS OUR LADY OF PERPETUAL HELP NOVENA While this devo on is not new to our parish, we would like to invite everyone every Wednesday evenings at 6:30pm for the novena to Our Lady of Perpetual Help. The truly beau ful mosaic icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, which graces the altar on the south side of our church, was imported from Italy and was donated by a generous parishioner during the early years of our church. It is an image of an original, the origin of which is unknown. Many have thought that St. Luke painted it, but its existence prior to the late Middle Ages cannot be confirmed. Likely it is Eastern in origin due to the Byzan ne style and Greek le ering. The icon features the child Jesus fleeing into his Mother s protec ve arms as the Archangels Michael and Gabriel show Him the instruments of crucifixion. The Greek le ers spell out the first le ers of Mary and Jesus names. The icon arrived in Rome in the 15th century a er a merchant who had heard about a miraculous image on the island of Crete went to the island and stole it. When he arrived in Rome with the icon among his wares, he fell very ill. As he lay dying, he ordered that a friend place the icon in a church, perhaps hoping that it would alleviate his suffering. The friend took the icon to his own home, where his wife hung it in their bedroom. The Virgin evidently was not pleased with this arrangement, and several mes appeared to the man and told him that she wished for her image to be placed in a church. The man, despite the miraculous visita on, was not moved to relinquish control of the image. The Blessed Virgin next appeared to the man s daughter and asked that the icon be enshrined in a church between the two very large churches of St. Mary Major and St. John Lateran. The daughter communicated this to her father and he relented, and so the icon was enshrined in 1499 in St. Ma hew s, the church that lies between the two larger edifices. Pilgrims flocked to the small church for 300 years to pray before the miraculous image, un l Napoleon s invading army destroyed the church in Once the soldiers had le the area, people searched the ruins looking for the image but could not locate it anywhere. It seemed that the image had been lost, and for the next 60 years there was no men on of it. In 1855, the Order of Redemptorists came to Rome and were granted possession of the loca on where St. Ma hew s had once stood to build a church in honor of their founder, St. Alphonsus Liguori. It happened that a young Redemptorist priest remembered that as a young boy he had been told of a miraculous image that had once been enshrined in the previous church. The image had been safely transferred to an Augus nian monastery near Rome. When the Redemptorists heard of this, they pe oned the pope to allow the image to be returned to the spot that the Blessed Virgin had requested. The pope granted their request and further commissioned the Redemptorist order to spread devo on to Our Lady of Perpetual Help throughout the world. The image was transferred in a solemn procession on April 26, 1866, to the Church of St. Alphonsus. Today, replicas of the image of Our Lady of Perpetual Help grace the altars of countless churches throughout the world (por ons excerpted from The Church s Most Powerful Novenas, by Michael Dubruiel). Today, replicas of Our Lady of Perpetual Help graces the countless altars of churches around the world. (excerpted from stpaulpgh.org) Allow this devo on to draw you into deeper love and trust for Our Lady and her son, Jesus. Join us each Wednesday evenings at 6:30pm!
