1 Remembrance Sunday 8th November What s on in Our verse of the year.through Christ, God changed us from enemies into his friends and gave us the task of making others his friends also. 2 Corinthians 5:18 November 2015
2 The Missioner Muses The Man in the Window Last November in St Matthew s we revealed a wonderful arts and crafts stained glass effect window sponsored by local and national businesses with artistic input from community groups and the children and students of three schools. The church was open each weekend for visitors and raised over 300 for Help for Heroes. The window was a response to the global commemoration of the WW1 Centenary. This brilliant community effort also gave us a creative opportunity to make the first stained glass window for St. Matthew s and produce a single memorial to the men of Birches Head whose names appear on other memorials in the city, but nowhere in Birches Head itself. As well as the names, a photograph of one young man in uniform was also featured except it was enlarged from 6x4 inches to 6x4 feet and was artistically transformed with stained glass effect outline. He looked like a saint. How would you describe a saint? Church stained glass windows give us what I consider to be the best and simplest definition someone through whom the light shines - just ordinary people like us who usually did extraordinary things as a result of their faith in Christ. Our man in the window was a local man whose family lived round the corner from St. Matthew s. We will be discovering more about Harry in this year s Remembrance service at St. Matthew s on Sunday 8 th November at 4.00 p.m. We will also see how some of the window has started to be coloured in by members of the congregation, and have chance to make poppy stained glass window crafts. We will reflect again on the freedom we enjoy today and pray for our world which is still at war in many places. And as we see the light shining through the picture of our local soldier on our window we will be reminded of the many millions of ordinary men and women who went to war and were either killed in battle or returned mentally and physically disabled for the rest of their lives. Were they saints? They may or may not have confessed Christ or attended church, but they followed his example of laying down their lives for their friends.you and me. And according to Jesus there is no greater love.

8 The Cobridge Community Choir The choir was started in February 2015 by Musical Director Claire Henry, and they rehearse at Christ Church, Cobridge. Claire was fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to own one of the houses in Cobridge. As a commitment to improving the area each house owner suggested ways to bring the community together. Claire offered to start a new community choir, the 3 C's (Cobridge Community Choir) choir. Members of the choir are all ages and abilities and there is no audition process. Members pay 3.00 per session on a pay as you go basis with no membership fee. The choir sings a great variety of songs from Gospel to Pop. Claire has a great deal of experience in music. She normally travels the country as Workshop Leader in Residence with the City Of London Sinfonia where she writes and presents concerts for young children. Claire has previously worked with the BBC Concert Orchestra, the Philharmonia Orchestra and future work will see her collaborating with the City Of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. She has also worked alongside Gareth Malone. Over the summer the choir performed their first gig at a community event next to the houses. The choir were great and are now preparing for their next concert on the 21st November at Burleigh Pottery, Burslem 7p.m. The choir will be accompanied by a professional pianist and will feature guest soloist on the flute, Cormac Henry, who is principle flute with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and The John Wilson Orchestra. Tickets will be available on the door. The choir are also leading the singing at the Service of Remembrance in Hanley City Centre at 11 a.m. on Sunday 8th November.
9 COACH TRIPS Some of the participants on the Blackpool trip. The Chester trip in November is already fully booked. Look out for next year s trips which include Cadbury s World in March and the reputable Evensong at Mirfield (where Tommy was trained) in May. HARVEST 2015 Harvest time this year saw food donations given to the foodbank, Salvation Army and the St Mark s projects. The harvest meals in the churches were excellent social occasions, well supported by church members and also the community, and the Mission to Seafarers and Children s Society benefitted from the monetary donations. The BOAZ TRUST, a Christian organisation, is organising a training day in Wolverhampton on How can churches respond to the refugee crisis? A group are going from Sanctus and they are contributing to the day. Tickets are 5 and are available from Charlotte Swan on Young People s Bible Study Group. A small group will meet at 7 p.m. on Tuesdays 3rd, 17th, and 24th November to study Mark s gospel at St. Matthew s Vicarage. If you know anyone aged who may be interested, contact Rev d Christine for details. OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD UPDATE. Completed boxes need to be returned to Churches by Sunday 1st November.
