1 Fourth Sunday of Advent December 23, 2018 MEMORIES AND DREAMS Throughout our lives, we retain the language and habits of our native region and family of origin. Should we return to our home after a long absence, we quickly revert to its familiar speech and practices. Our deep memory is reflected in old stories and words and speech patterns. This familiarity runs like an underground river and accompanies us wherever we go. Not only do we remember, we are incorporated into and made part of a greater memory. In remembering and recollecting, we are in turn gathered up and re-collected. Today we remember Mary, a small figure travelling the country roads to visit Elizabeth. All the great pronouncements and dreams of the prophets point to this time when the Lord s words to Mary would be gathered and fulfilled. Question of the Week For this weekend December 23 4th Sunday of Advent Obedience to God's Will Elizabeth said, Blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her by the Lord. (Luke 1:45) When was it hardest for you to trust in God's plan for you, as Mary did? What can help you at such times? For the Christmas Season December 25 Nativity of the Lord His own did not accept him. (John 1:10-11) If Jesus were to be born today, do you think you would accept him and follow him? Why or why not? For next weekend December 30 The Holy Family Respect for Elders Jesus went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them. (Luke 2:51a) How would you have reacted if you were Mary and Joseph finding Jesus in the Temple?

3 Page 3 Fourth Sunday of Advent December 23, 2018 FAITH FORMATION & ENRICHMENT Baptizing Your Child at St. Timothy Requirements for having your child baptized at St. Timothy are: registration at St. Tim s (or another parish) and attendance at a pre-baptism class unless it has been less than two years since you have attended our class previously. Parents are encouraged to take the class before their child is born. This class is normally offered once per month. The next class will be held Monday, January 7, 2019 from 7:00 8:30 p.m. in the church. It is necessary to preregister by calling the Parish Office. You may not schedule a baptism until you have attended class. For more information or to register for the class, call the Parish Office at Godparents are also welcome to attend. Special Date for Infant Baptism at the Easter Vigil April 20, 2019, 8:30 p.m. If you are going to have your child baptized in the first quarter of 2019 this is a unique opportunity. For more information please call the parish office, Dr. Mary Neal Book Discussion Group A study and discussion group using Dr. Mary Neal s book, 7 Lessons from Heaven: How Dying Taught Me To Live a Joyful Life will meet Monday, January 7, at 7:00 p.m. in the parish center. Please bring a copy of the book and be prepared to share in the discussion. This is the third of our four group discussion sessions. Pre-registration is not required and all are invited to attend. Meals on Wheels Thank You The approach of nearly winter weather did not deter our sturdy volunteers from delivering Meals on Wheels from Unity Hospital to residents of Spring Lake Park, Fridley, Columbia Heights and Hilltop, during the weeks of November and December 3-7. The temperature may have cooled, but the meals were still delivered hot, (or at least warm). 4 Page 4 Fourth Sunday of Advent December 23, 2018 COMMUNITY & OUTREACH Social Justice News Refugee Resettlement Collection: On the weekend of January 5th and 6th, as we celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany, our parish will conduct a collection of household goods to be given to refugees who will be welcomed into our communities in the coming year. This collection is one way in which we can participate in National Migration Week 2019 Building Communities of Welcome, as promoted by the United States Catholic Conference. This week recognizes the universality of Christ and His call to bring peace to the whole world, and recalls that the Holy Family themselves were once refugees as they fled to Egypt to escape persecution at the hands of Herod (Matthew 2, 13-15). Similar to past years, we call our collection a Basket Drive, inviting donors to bring a laundry or waste basket filled with smaller household items. Posters giving a list of requested items are on the bulletin boards at the church entrances, and will also be found in next weekend s bulletin. Please refer to the list as you shop for items anyone needs when moving into a new home. Note: Due to various donation guidelines, we can only accept new items. Overcoming Hatred The Shoah and the Transmission Memory.. listening, educating, and growing into the 21st Century Ken Engel, Chair of CHAIM (Children of Holocaust Survivors Association in Minnesota) Sheriff James Stuart, Anoka County Sunday, January 27, 6:30-8:00, in the Church Ken Engel s parents were both survivors of the Holocaust. He will give a short history of his parents experiences before and after the Holocaust, as well as what challenges they encountered when they immigrated to our country. He further talks about how young people today can help to steer their peers into a more positive direction. Sheriff Stuart will share information with the parents on the existence of hate groups and advise the students as to what tools they can use to resist becoming involved in members of such groups. A free will offering will be taken in support of Anoka County s Forensic Department and Jewish Federations of North America, specified for the care of aging Holocaust survivors. THANK YOU to the ladies who baked at home and donated cookies and bars. We had 32 different kinds and 544 plates.
