1 Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time June 17, 2018 THE MASTER STORYTELLER In today s Gospel, Jesus is presented to us as the master storyteller. He loved to use parables as a tool for comparing one thing to something else. In most of his parables, Jesus revealed who God is by comparing God s essence or actions with something familiar to his listeners. In the parable of the mustard seed, Jesus proclaims a marvelous and irrefutable truth. His small band of disciples, as insignificant as they may have felt, would one day produce a mighty kingdom whose growth was initiated by God. The seeds of this kingdom were planted by God and it is God who will harvest the fruit brought forth from those seeds. The extent of the growth of God s kingdom cannot be predicted. We must trust the work of the Master s hand as we, the mustard plant, grow and grow. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

To what extent do my attitudes and actions promote or hinder God s kingdom flourishing? For next weekend June 24 - The Nativity of St. John the Baptist: John the Baptist was an unexpected gift from God who possessed many traits we might imitate, including humility and selfknowledge. How do I use my gifts for good? What does it mean to me to be strong in spirit in today s world? Bringing Up the Gifts We encourage people to participate in our weekend liturgies by carrying our offerings of money, bread, and wine to the altar. We especially encourage young families to do this as a way of engaging our young people. Please sign up in the binder on the credenza in back of church for any open weekend Mass you will be attending. When you come to church, check your name off so the usher knows you are present and go to the back of church when the collection is being taken. The usher will instruct you if needed. Communion at Mass If you, for physical reasons, are unable to come forward for communion at Mass, and would like an usher to lead our Eucharistic Ministers to you to bring you the Eucharist, please notify the ushers before Mass (or have someone notify them for you). They would be happy to help! On a related note, if you are able to come forward for communion, we ask that you please do so, in order that our Eucharistic Ministers have more time to tend to those who are physically unable to come. An Invitation to Prayer Weekday Mass (or a Service of the Word & Communion) is celebrated in our Parish Center Chapel at 9:00 a.m., Monday Friday. The Rosary is recited at 8:30 a.m. Also, the Chapel is available for quiet prayer during Parish office hours. All are invited to come pray before the Blessed Sacrament (in the tabernacle), offering their personal intentions, as well as the intentions of our nation and world. With so many important issues and events taking place throughout the world, this is an excellent way to spend time in prayer.
