Nearly everywhere in the Roman world, cizens agreed on how to celebrate marriage. Consent of the man and woman is what made a marriage valid in the eyes of the law, and although there was a tradional ceremony, it was home-based and oponal. The ceremony was for showing the social status of the families involved (the procession ideally detoured through crowds), and for reminding the woman of her legal transfer from her father's control to her husband's. The "big moment" of the ceremony had nothing to do with vows, but with the bride's donning the yellow veil with red highlights that was the daily wear of married women. A wedding feast included soothsayers and animal sacrifice to the new household's gods. Chrisans found that distasteful, of course, but since marriage was a family maer, they could edit things out. The church was comfortable with this, and somemes recommended that the couple seek the advice of the bishop. His permission was only required for the marriage of a cleric, or for a marriage Rome didn't recognize, such as between a free woman and a slave. There was no blessing, no liturgy, no priest. Chrisans followed the customs of the day, but they knew that custom and relaonships were transformed from within themselves by the fact of their bapsm. Outwardly, Chrisans married exactly as their pagan neighbors, but they certainly invested the usual gestures with a dynamic sense of Christ's presence. --Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. 2 Sacramental Policies ANOINTING OF THE SICK At the 8:30am Mass on the first Friday of each month. BAPTISM Parents will need to provide a copy of the child s birth certificate and participate in a class. Baptismal Classes are held on the 2nd Saturday of the month at 11 am in the Church office. Parents must call the church office to register for the class. Godparents must be practicing Catholics who are confirmed and married in the Church, if married. CONFESSION Confessions are offered one-half hour before all Masses, or anytime upon request. CONFIRMATION Confirmation will be given students in 8 th grade or above. They must have completed the 8 th grade religious education class and optimally the 7 th as well. Sponsors must be practicing Catholics who are already confirmed and married in the Church, if married. Parents should not be sponsors for their own children. For information on Confirmation preparation for adults please contact the pastor. FIRST HOLY COMMUNION First Holy Communion will be offered to children in Grade 2. Children must attend CCD regularly throughout Grade 2 in order to receive the Sacrament in May of that year. Students will also be prepared for the Sacrament of Reconciliation in Grade 2. MARRIAGE Both parties are expected to participate in the preparation program. Parties must notify the pastor at least one year prior to their proposed marriage date. Please meet with the pastor for a fuller explanation and to make arrangements. 4 May 17, 2015 Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord Fundraising Opportunity More books are in! We now have all of the books from the Angelic Letters Series, available at the Greeters Table. To date we have raised over $7,000 dollars with the sale of this book series. Encourage your friends and family to read the books or give them away as gifts. Author and winter parishioner, Henry Ripplinger, has generously donated the books in order to help raise money for our Building Fund. You can also purchase the books during the week at the church office. Great Gift Idea Looking for a great Graduation gift? Adult Bible Study Are you interested in learning more about the Gospel of John? Deacon Mike and Mimi Leverington will meet to study The Gospel According to John and the Johannine Letters. This bible study will begin May 19th and will meet on Tuesdays at 7pm. It is a 15 week course with breaks throughout. The cost is $10 for the materials and there is room for 2 more participants. He is now the recipient of scholarships to all 3 of our Arizona universities as well as to the local community college. This includes a full ride scholarship to ASU, where he plans on studying engineering. Noah is the oldest son to Craig and Jenny Rudko and grandson to Bob Butchko. An open white veil to cover the head is required, no tiaras or crowns allowed. As the CCD year comes to an end, we are already preparing for the upcoming year.
