1. WHAT IS THE HTB DISCIPLESHIP YEAR? The HTB Discipleship Year is an opportunity to invest a year of your life to grow in your relationship with God, maximise your leadership potential, and experience ministry at the heart of HTB. Through a combination of theology, leadership training, mission, outreach, encounter, and hands-on ministry experience, our prayer is that this year would lay a foundation for you to live a life sold out for Jesus, impacting culture and transforming society in whatever sphere you end up in. Ultimately, out students will be equipped and released to carry the vision of HTB: to play our part in the evangelisation of the nations, the revitalization of the church, and the transformation of society. The Discipleship Year runs from Monday 10 th September 2018 until Sunday 31 st July 2019, and applications are open to anyone aged at the start of the course. Applications close 30 th June 2018.

2. WHAT DOES IT INVOLVE? Term Dates: Term One: Mon 10 th September to Sun 16 th December Term Two: Sun 6 th January to Sun 31 st March Term Three: Sun 21 st April to Sun 28 th July Basic Structure The Discipleship Year is an eleven-month programme of leadership and discipleship training and a church-based work placement. It has two components: core and ministry placements. Core Content (1.5 days p/w) is designed to deepen your walk with Jesus and develop your capacity as a leader: One full day receiving teaching and input in the classroom Time spent studying, reading, and completing assignments A three hours serving in outreach or community service Serving at one Sunday service (linked to your placement) Ministry Placements ( days p/w) give students the opportunity to serve and experience ministry at the heart of the local church. Placements are available in: Kids Youth Students Worship Media Alpha Social Transformation Leadership College London Administration Prayer & Discipleship As part of the year, students will also: Meet regularly with a mentor Attend two Discipleship Year weekends away Serve at key HTB conferences and events, including Leadership Conference and Focus Go on an (optional) overseas mission trip

3. WHAT DOES A TYPICAL WEEK LOOK LIKE? Life as a Discipleship Year student varies from week to week, and placement to placement. Some weeks we will be away on mission trips or at conferences, but our regular term-time timetable will follow the rough timetable below. Part-time students will be in Monday-Wednesday (inc. some evenings), and will serve at a service on Sunday. Full-time students will be in Monday-Thursday (inc. some evenings), and will serve at a service on Sunday also. Sample Weekly Timetable: Mon Morning Afternoon Evening Teaching (Theology and Discipleship) Teaching (Leadership) Placements Tues Placements Placements Placements Placements Placements Weds Outreach: HTB Shelter Outreach: Alpha Placements Outreach: Alpha Thurs Placements Placements Placements Fri Outreach: HTB Shelter Placements Placements Sat Sun Day off! Serve at one Sunday service Students attend all core sessions in green, and one outreach or community service session in blue. Part-time placement students serve four available placement sessions in yellow (including Tuesday morning and afternoon, and Wednesday morning), and fulltime placement students serve six available placement sessions in yellow. Precise timetables will be worked out with the Discipleship Year team prior to the year commencing.

4. CORE CONTENT The HTB Discipleship Year has two components: core content and ministry placements. The core content of the year is designed to deepen your walk with Jesus and develop your capacity as a leader. a. Teaching Programme Although sitting in a classroom isn t the only way to learn, teaching and training is an important part of growth. We gather for two mornings each week to eat breakfast together, worship, and receive input from an array of speakers from HTB and beyond, including Nicky and Pippa Gumbel, Pete Wynter, Stephen Foster, Will van der Hart, Martyn and Emily Layzell, and the HTB Leadership Team. On Mondays, we ll focus on discipleship and spiritual growth our speakers will impart their expertise on a number of core subjects from identity, emotional health, and spiritual disciplines to evangelism, social justice, and ministering in the power of the Holy Spirit. On Wednesdays, we ll take weekly modules in Theology and in Leadership. b. Personal Study Students also spend one afternoon per week studying, reading and completing assignments. This time is about taking personal responsibility for your growth away from the classroom. You ll read a number of books throughout the year, and complete assignments these could be book reports, journaling exercises, presentations, or reflections on what we ve been learning in our sessions. c. Outreach & Community Service We believe that growth should be hands-on, so students will spend three hours per week serving in outreach projects. This could be reaching those who are unchurched by serving at morning or evening Alpha, or giving time to the homeless by helping out at the HTB Shelter.

d. Sunday Serving Finally, all students will serve at one service on Sundays to invest in the life of HTB. You ll also attend one service as a congregation member, so that you can be fully integrated into our church community. e. Other Opportunities In addition to these weekly activities, students will be assigned a mentor, go on two weekends away with their fellow students, serve at key HTB conferences and events such as Focus and Leadership Conference, and have the option to go on an overseas mission trip.

5. MINISTRY PLACEMENTS As well as core content, the second component of the Discipleship Year is ministry placements. These are designed to give students the opportunity to experience ministry at the heart of the local church by being allocated placements in a department at HTB. Students can apply for part-time or full-time placements: Part-time placements involve approx. 20 hours (2.5 days) per week serving in a department or ministry at HTB. This usually looks like 2 office days (Tuesday, and Wednesday) and one evening. These are designed for students that need to work a parttime job alongside the Discipleship Year. Full-time placements involve approx. 28 hours (3.5 days) per week serving in a department or ministry. This usually looks like three full office days (Tuesday-Thursday), and one evening per week. Your exact timetable will be arranged with your placement manager before the course commences. Your Sunday service allocation will be connected to your placement. a. Prayer & Discipleship The HTB Discipleship team aims to make disciples who make disciples. We work to grow and disciple the HTB congregation and mobilise leaders, ultimately playing our part in the vision of HTB to see the reevangelisation of the nation, the revitalisation of the church and the transformation of society. We equip people to follow Jesus in every area of their lives through living out these five key patterns: pray daily, read the Bible, join a Connect Group, commit to a service, and walk with others. We also drive the vision of the HTB:24-7 Prayer Room for day and night prayer, believing that prayer is part of the fire beneath the church. If you re passionate about building genuine, authentic community in order to see people energised and equipped to follow Jesus in every

area of life, we d love to have you a part of the HTB Discipleship team! By joining our team, you ll have the opportunity to grow in your character and gifting across several areas, including developing leaders, mobilising people to engage in social justice, and shaping the culture of prayer at the heart of HTB. Whether that s ministering in Connect Groups and supporting training events, championing initiatives across the church that drive social transformation, or leading times of prayer and developing prayer initiatives within the HTB prayer community, you ll play a key role in promoting and delivering HTB s heart for discipleship and prayer. You can either join in our work in all of these areas or choose to focus solely on HTB:24-7 prayer we want to make space for you to grow in your unique passion and gifting! b. Media (Creative Services) Our Creative Services team is set up very much like an in-house agency to serve everyone creatively at HTB - and ensure that the message of the church is delivered to the right people, at the right time, with the right impact, in the right way. We operate with a full range of services from Design, Moving Image, Marketing Comms (including social, editorial & digital) and Production. What drives and motivates us is our ability to amplify the various life changing messages that are delivered through our many services, courses or events throughout the year to ultimately play our part in the evangelisation of the nation, the revitalisation of the church and the transformation of society. Whether you are involved in Account Management, helping to drive projects forward and being exposed to most areas on the floor, or supporting our Moving Image, Marketing Comms or Production teams, we hope that students joining our team will learn from our desire to pursue creative excellence in everything we do. You ll also learn that creativity takes courage we are blessed to be able to take our strength from scripture: But as for you, be strong and courageous, for your work will be rewarded. (2 Chronicles 15:7). Our internal mantra is None of us are as good as all of us which neatly describes our 360-integrated campaign approach to key projects. c. Kids Our desire is that children and families who connect with HTB whether in a small way or a big way: ENCOUNTER Jesus, EXPLORE faith, ENJOY

belonging to the church and be EQUIPPED for a life of faith. We strive to do this through our Sunday morning children s program which caters for over 400 children across 5 different services. The sessions include Bible stories, games, crafts, worship and prayer. We hold special family services in the year which are creative, interactive and include everyone. We hold 3 large community events each year, which seek to be fun, bring families together, build community as well as introduce faith in a meaningful way. We want to impact whole families so they can do faith together. We support the church s parent and toddler group which is a space for parents and children to be together. We hold regular Family Prayer Days where families can enjoy interactive prayer stations to encounter Jesus. We do schools work by offering Christian assemblies and we want to expand this work to reach more children in our local community. A placement with us would involve you taking part in all aspects of children and families ministry, and through that taking the chance to explore your own passions and gifts. There are opportunities to create a project which will add to our ministry here at HTB. d. Youth We are seeing the most exciting movement of hundreds of young people gathering together weekly to worship God, have fun and encounter Him. We create spaces where young people thrive and are looking for enthusiastic individuals to join the adventure for a year. If you do your placement with us, your time will be split between the Discipleship Year and a placement with the Youth Team at HTB doing everything from mentoring and discipleship to schools work, running youth events and our annual weekend away. We number of different placements in Younger Youth (Years 6-9), Older Youth (Years 10 & 11), Sixth Form (Years 12 & 13), Youth Creative Team, Schools & Outreach, and Events & Administration. e. Students HTB Students is the home for everyone student age at HTB. Our vision is to see every student in London become a daring ambassador for Jesus so that means living boldly for him in every area of our lives. We

meet all together on Tuesday nights for worship, teaching and Connect Groups and have plenty of other opportunities for prayer, worship, evangelism and community. Our team help run our termly programme, our out-of-term programme and provide pastoral support and discipleship for the whole student community. A placement with our team will involve supporting the programme, leading in evangelism, pastoral care for students and generally helping our students live for Jesus. We want to help you grow in your gifts so we will tailor your role to your own experience and the areas you want to grow in. We look forward to hearing from you! f. Worship The Worship placement is designed for people with experience in worship leading who want to be further equipped to pastor and lead teams in the future, enhance their practical skills as a worship leader and serve in the context of a local church. If you have a heart for God, worship and the local church and a sense that God might be calling you step more into this we would love to hear from you. The year will include practical input and gaining experience in shadowing the worship staff and leading worship in various contexts, as well as some vocal training, music theory and instrument coaching. There will also be worship teaching and in-depth input around worship, worship leading and pastoring a team as well as a chance for creative development and songwriting. Students will also have the option to join the Worship Central Academy for a one-week intensive, two-day retreat, once a term training days and monthly online hubs. This incurs an additional fee of 550. See for more information. g. Leadership There are two leadership placements. First is the Leadership Placement, which involves supporting the work of the Leadership College London as we seek to connect, train and develop distinctively Christian leaders in all spheres of society. You ll administratively support the LCL team, be involved in planning for future courses, and the delivery of network events. You will also attend LCL lectures on Thursday evenings, as well as other ad hoc events out of office hours. On top of all of this, the year

will also include supporting the planning and execution of the Leadership Conference 2019, and the ministry of OneLife. The second placement is the Social Media and Marketing Placement, which involves supporting the work of the LCL as we seek to connect, train and develop distinctively Christian leaders in all spheres of society. Specifically, you will be responsible for creating and developing LCL s presence on social media platforms, including live events, content writing and editing talks. Ideally you would have some production experience and be a proficient photographer. You will also attend LCL lectures on Thursday evenings, as well as other ad hoc events out of office hours. h. Administration If you are passionate about growing in the gift of administration and supporting the behind the scenes work of the church, then this placement is for you! The Vicar s Office team exists to support the clergy in all that they do. A placement with our team will give you insight into the heart of HTB and exposure to how everything runs behind the scenes. It is an opportunity to develop skills in administration and organisation through a variety of projects such as the Bible in One Year. i. Social Transformation We believe the local church is called to be the hands and feet of Jesus in this world, reflecting his love to those on the margins of society. Within the HTB context, we seek to help transform the lives of men and women who are homeless, vulnerably housed, or coming out of prison. Our team has two broad areas: Caring for Ex-Offenders (CFEO) and the HTB Shelter. CFEO connects people leaving prison to a mentor and supportive church community in London. A CFEO student placement involves helping on Alpha courses in London prisons, helping to plan and run CFEO training days and the Prison Ministry Conference, meeting with chaplains, churches, and other criminal justice organizations, using social media to raise awareness, and helping to connect individuals from prison to church.

The HTB Shelter is a multi- service drop-in that exists to see systemic homelessness ended in our greater community. Our staff and volunteers meet practical needs through connecting guests with our in-house caseworks, addictions specialists, and debt advisors as well as hot meals, bible studies, a clothing store, haircutting station and more. A Shelter placement student will join this work, as well as assisting with the Shelter Bible Study and Alpha Course, developing CV and skills training sessions, assisting with the coordination of our Women s-only event, and assisting with the coordination of our Shelter Mentorship and Apprenticeship programs, as well as other outreach projects in the community. Our goal is to enable students to be vessels of Jesus love and catalyze Christ-centric transformation. j. Alpha We equip and serve the church in its mission to help people to discover and develop a relationship with Jesus through Alpha. We will achieve our mission with the following: to ensure effective Alphas are run in urban areas across major countries; to reach the next generation effectively through innovation; to be at the forefront of innovation, technology and digital tools that equip churches, Alpha leaders and church leaders to deliver Alpha efficiently and effectively; to serve the Church, develop young leaders, and support church planting; to create stronger marriages and prevent marriage and family breakdowns by focusing on the marriage and marriage preparation courses As Alpha has many facets this placement has the flexibility to be very varied, offering the opportunity to work alongside the various teams that make up the global movement. We would love this placement to develop you spiritually, personally and professionally, therefore your role will be tailored to your gifts, passions and interests and will provide the opportunity to practically serve on a local course at HTB or optionally at one of the courses run by our Prisons team in a local Prison (+18). The key placement areas would be working alongside the Alpha UK team focused on the (re) evangelization of the nation, Alpha Prisons, focused on the transformation of lives through Alpha in the prison context and the Communications and Marketing team, focused on being at the forefront of digital innovation equipping and revitalising churches and leaders on a global scale.

. 6. FINANCES The total cost of the HTB Discipleship Year is 750, which must be paid in full prior to the course starting. This cost covers course materials, books, weekly breakfasts, two weekends away, and other costs. There will be an optional overseas mission-trip during the year, which students will be required to fundraise for. a. Raising your own support Students are responsible for covering all their costs for the year. Once you receive a place on the course, we will send out a full fundraising guide to help you on your way. In the past, students have used personal savings, worked in the build-up, or fundraised from family and friends to cover their costs. Students on part-time placements may be able to fit a job alongside the year. (N.B. full-time placement students will not be able to have a job in addition to the year). Some maintenance grants are available for students who would otherwise be unable to to make it through the year please indicate this on your application form, and it will be discussed at interview. b. Accommodation Students are responsible for finding their own accommodation for the year. HTB will do all we can to help you look for accommodation or rooms with members of the congregation if you are coming from outside London, but we sadly can t guarantee that we will be able to find every student a place to stay. c. How much do I need to raise? Costs vary from student to student, and particularly vary depending on your accommodation cost (good London rent for one room is 600). We estimate that, if you are paying rent, 1000 per month is a reasonable upper estimate for your total budget (including living costs and spending

money). If you are able to share a room and bike to save travel costs, will significantly reduce your budget to around 500 per month. Many students are able to find cheap rooms with members of the congregation, and we will do all we can to help you in your search for a room.
