2 2 Olivier Messiaen ( ) was perhaps the greatest French composer of the 20 th century, as well as one of the most important composers of organ music. He developed his own unique system of harmony and rhythm. While he was not influenced by jazz, many of his harmonies and rhythms nevertheless sound jazzy; Joie Et Clarté Des Corps Glorieux ( Joy and light of the heavenly host ) provides an excellent example. Pentecost is the birthday of the church. Happy Birthday! On the first Pentecost, the followers of Jesus gathered in Jerusalem to wait for something they were not sure and then the Holy Spirit appeared on the rush of the wind, tongues of fire dancing on the disciples heads, and languages being spoken and understood by all the people. The Spirit of Pentecost unites the people as followers of The Way and the church is born. Churches in Italy celebrate by throwing rose petals into the air as symbols of the tongues of fire. In France it is customary to blow trumpets during the Divine service to recall the sound of the mighty, rushing wind. In Ghana, churches celebrate with community dancing and drums - symbols of unity and the power of the church in motion. What signs and symbols do you see and experience in our worship today? Gathering PRELUDE Joie Et Clarté Des Corps Glorieux Olivier Messiaen Silence is kept. WELCOME OPENING LITANY Breath of God Breath of Life Breath of our deepest yearning Come, Holy Spirit Comforter, Interpreter, Disruptor Enliven our hearts with your mighty fire! Help us to learn from our mistakes and accept your forgiveness. Wind, Fire, Words, Whispers Fill this space and our lives with your presence and your peace.
