Ninth Sunday after Pentecost August 6, :30 am & 10:00 am Bible Verse of the Month: Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you. Psalm 67:3 (NRSV) Gathering Prelude Adagio from Symphony IV Charles-Marie Widor Praeambulum Please use the prelude as a quiet time to prepare yourself for worship. Welcome You are invited to stand. Heinrich Scheidemann Confession and Forgiveness Blessed be the holy Trinity, + one God, full of compassion and mercy, abounding in steadfast love. Amen. Trusting God s promise of forgiveness, let us confess our sin against God and one another. Eternal God our creator, in you we live and move and have our being. Look upon us, your children, the work of your hands. Forgive us all our offenses, and cleanse us from proud thoughts and empty desires. By your grace draw us near to you, our refuge and our strength; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. God s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit given to us. In the mercy of almighty God, Christ died for us while we still were sinners; and for his sake, God + forgives you all your sins. Amen. You are invited to stand and face the processional cross. Gathering Hymn Oh, Worship the King Hymn #842 Greeting The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you.

Prayer of the Day Glorious God, your generosity waters the world with goodness, and you cover creation with abundance. Awaken in us a hunger for the food that satisfies both body and spirit, and with this food fill all the starving world; through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. FIRST LESSON Isaiah 55:1-5 God invites Israel to a great feast at which both food and drink are free. God also promises to make an everlasting covenant with all the people, with promises that previously had been limited to the line of kings. As David was a witness to the nations, these nations shall now acknowledge the ways in which God has glorified Israel. Please be seated. Word First Lesson Isaiah 55:1-5 Holy Bible pg (OT) The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Second Lesson Psalm 145:8-9, Holy Bible pg. 644 (OT) The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. You are invited to stand. Gospel Acclamation The Holy Gospel according to Matthew. Glory to you, O Lord. GOSPEL Matthew 14:13-21 After John the Baptist is murdered, Jesus desires a time of solitude. Still, his compassion for others will not allow him to dismiss those who need him, and he is moved to perform one of his greatest miracles. Gospel Matthew 14:13-21 Holy Bible pg. 16 (NT) The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. Sermon Hymn of the Day We Come to the Hungry Feast Hymn #479 Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. 3
Peace The peace of the Lord be with you always. And also with you. After sharing the Peace, please be seated. Offering Ministry Opportunities Organ, Courtyard Offering Here I Am, Lord arr. Eucharist is the Greek word for thanksgiving. Before we come forward to eat as a congregation and family of God, we give thanks to God. The Great Thanksgiving THE PREFACE is a prayer which reminds us that, in Christ, we are united with all the Saints who have gone before us. We are a part of the Communion of Saints through all time and space. 4 Preface It is indeed right, our duty and our joy......we praise your name and join their unending hymn:
Sanctus Words of Institution...For as often as we eat of this bread and drink from this cup, we proclaim the mystery of our faith. Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. THE LORD S PRAYER is the prayer that Jesus taught the disciples to pray found in Matthew 6:9-13 and Luke 11:2-4. Lord's Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. Please be seated. The Distribution Bethany welcomes all to receive the body and blood of Christ in Holy Communion. An usher will direct you forward for communion. There are several stations across the front of the seating sections. Groups are welcome to visit a communion station together. 10 Renewal for Growth Organ Refurbishment The organ project is underway! Workers from Morel & Associates, Denver s leading organ service company, are busy removing pipes for cleaning and renovation. Over the next 4 to 6 weeks, every one of the organ s 3,300 pipes will be individually taken out and returned to perfect working order. In addition, the entire organ loft will be cleaned, some new electronic components will be installed, and improvements will be made to the organ s swell shades (these are the doors you may have noticed opening and closing while the organ plays). For the next 4 to 6 weeks, the organ will be out of commission, so we will be using the organ from the chapel. In September, we will be receiving our new organ console. (The organ is all the pipes and equipment you see up above the choir loft, while the console is the thing with the keyboards and pedals that the organist plays on.) The cabinet for our new console has been manufactured in Europe, and is on its way to the Rodgers organ company in Oregon, where it will be fitted with keyboards, drawknobs, and electronic components. It should be arriving in late September, when it will be installed and configured, and the old console will be removed. The new console, in addition to controlling all of our existing pipes, has the capability to add many new and exciting sounds, some of which you would never expect to hear from a pipe organ! 10
Sunday Morning Experience September 10, 2017 May 20, 2018 The Sunday Morning Experience for the upcoming school year will allow for intentional time for worship, education and fellowship for all. Anticipate worship experiences at 8:15 and 10:15 am with an intentional flow of education and fellowship in between. Begin your Sunday morning experience with worship, or enter the day with education and fellowship, and then move into worship. The worship times will shift slightly to allow for a holistic experience for individuals and entire family units. Several opportunities for inter-generational teaching and learning will be offered throughout the year. Your pastors, along with lay leaders, will be offering education classes on Sunday mornings. More details will come with the August/September Beacon and in the worship bulletins throughout the summer. 11
