Bethany Lutheran Church 4500 East Hampden Avenue Cherry Hills Village, CO I AM: Christ the Shepherd EASTER 4 8:15 & 10:15 A.M. APRIL 22, 2018 BIBLE VERSE OF THE MONTH 1 John 4:16b God is love, and those who abide in love abide in God, and God abides in them. Gathering PRELUDE With High Delight Let Us Unite (Two Settings) David Schack Please use the prelude as a quiet time to prepare yourself for worship. WELCOME You are invited to stand. CONFESSION & FORGIVENESS In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another. (Silence for reflection and self-examination.) Most merciful God, we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen. In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for his sake God forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of the church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Please face the processional cross. GATHERING HYMN With High Delight Let Us Unite Hymn #368 GREETING The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you.

KYRIE HYMN OF PRAISE 2

PRAYER OF THE DAY O Lord Christ, good shepherd of the sheep, you seek the lost and guide us into your fold. Feed us, and we shall be satisfied; heal us, and we shall be whole. Make us one with you, for you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. Please be seated. 3

Word FIRST LESSON Psalm 23 The Psalm will be read responsively. Please read aloud the even verses (those in bold font). FIRST LESSON Psalm 23 1 The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. 2 He makes me lie down in green pastures; but leads me beside still waters; 3 he restores my soul. He leads me in right paths for his name s sake. 4 Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I fear no evil; for you are with me; your rod and your staffthey comfort me. 5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoit my head with oil; my cup overflows. 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord my whole life long. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. SECOND LESSON 1 John 3:16-24 Jesus death on our behalf is the clearest demonstration of divine love. This is the very love we share with others, not just through our words but especially through our deeds. In sharing such love we fulfill God s commandments. SECOND LESSON 1 John 3:16-24 Holy Bible pg. 260 (NT) The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION 4

GOSPEL John 10:11-18 In language that recalls the twenty-third psalm, Jesus describes himself as the shepherd who cares for his sheep. He is willing to die for them, and he is able to overcome death for them. The Holy Gospel according to John. Glory to you, O Lord. GOSPEL John 10:11-18 Holy Bible pg. 107 (NT) The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. SERMON HYMN OF THE DAY Have No Fear, Little Flock Hymn #764 NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. SACRAMENT OF HOLY BAPTISM (10:15 a.m.) (see back of bulletin) Vivien Catherine Baulesh, daughter of Eric and Megan Baulesh, born September 9, William Richard Bryant, born July 1, 2015 & Theodore Anderson Bryant, born August 23, 2017 sons of Paul Edward and Elizabeth Bryant --- James Averill Mattes-Ritz, son of Jonathan and Kari Mattes-Ritz, born August 14, 2017 PEACE The peace of the Lord be with you always. Contact Laura at or Laura@bethany-denver.org for a complete job description and to apply. The Altar Guild is seeking a coordinator to manage scheduling. This person does not necessarily have to be a member of the guild, and is responsible for dividing the duties and responsibilities of preparing the altar for worship services amongst the team. 12 Celebration of Holy Baptism L: We gather at these living waters. Throughout history, God s saving action toward God s people has taken place through water. Let us pray: Most Holy God, you created the seas, rivers, and lakes; you saved Noah and his family from the floods; you led the Israelites through the Red Sea and quenched their thirst with water flowing from a rock. Through the waters of the Jordan River, you proclaimed Jesus your own beloved son and so through these waters of baptism, you proclaim that we, too, are your own beloved children, now and forever. Amen. L: Parents, do you wish Vivien/James/William/Theodore to be baptized into the promises of God? R: I do. L: People of God, do you promise to support Vivien/James/William/Theodore as they continue their journeys of faith? C: We do. We make promises and assume responsibilities at baptism. God promises us unconditional love and life forever, and we know that our journey of faith encompasses certain promises so that our lives reflect this love. Parents, do you promise to: live with Vivien/James/William/Theodore among God s faithful people, bring them to the Lord s table, teach them the Lord s Prayer, the Creed, and the Ten Commandments, place the holy scriptures in their hands to nurture their faith and prayer life, so that they may know and trust God, encourage them to proclaim Christ in their life, care for others, the creation that God made, and work for justice and peace? R: I do. L: Parents, sponsors and people of God, do you promise to support and pray for Vivien/James/William/Theodore in their new lives in Christ? C: We do. Together we confess our faith in God, who creates, redeems and sustains us. Do you believe in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen Baptism: Vivien/William/James/Theodore, Child of God, I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Prayer: Sustain Vivien Catherine/James Averill/William Richard/Theodore Anderson with the gift of your Holy Spirit: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord, the spirit of joy in your presence, both now and forever. Amen. Blessing: Vivien Catherine/James Averill/William Richard/Theodore Anderson, child of God, you have been sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked with the cross of Christ forever. Amen. L: Let your light so shine before others that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in Heaven. Let us welcome the newly baptized! C: We welcome you! We promise to walk together on our journey of faith, to participate in God s mission of love and reconciliation for all of creation and to praise God with our whole lives. We are One in Christ! Amen! L: The peace of the Lord be with you always. C: And also with you. After sharing the Peace, please be seated.
