1 THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER April 10, :30 & 10:00 a.m. Bethany Lutheran Church 4500 East Hampden Avenue Cherry Hills Village, CO A Joyous Easter to all! The Easter season is a fifty day feast, a season of abundance, concluding on Pentecost (this year May 15). Today s Prelude, Bach s setting of Christ Lag in Todesbanden dates from The hymn related to this composition may be found at ELW #370, Christ Jesus Lay in Death s Strong Bands. In baptism we are received into the family of God, that is, the Church. In baptism Lincoln Christopher will be washed into Christ and clothed with Righteousness. As people of God we are called to join all God s people for the sake of sharing God s love and grace in the world. Gathering PRELUDE Christ Lag in Todesbanden J. S. Bach Silence is kept. WELCOME EASTER DIALOGUE Blessed be the holy Trinity, + one God, the fountain of living water, the rock who gave us birth, our light and our salvation. Blessed are you, O God. Day by day you shower us with blessings. You have brought us through the night of sin into the revealing and healing light of Jesus resurrection. Yet our lives are still shadowed by sin. Pause for reflection Make us alive in Christ, O God. Make us new as you make all things new. Renew us in grace, and restore us to living in your holiness. The light of the risen Christ puts to flight all evil deeds, washes away sin, casts out hate, brings peace, and humbles earthly pride. Jesus Christ loves you and + frees you from your sin. To him be glory and dominion forever and ever! Amen. GATHERING HYMN Good Christian Friends, Rejoice and Sing! Hymn #385 SACRAMENT OF HOLY BAPTISM (10:00 a.m.) Page 227 Lincoln Christopher Solbrook, son of Thomas & Beatrice (Masudhio) Solbrook, born August 24,

2 The Hymn of Praise expresses the joyful and celebrative nature of the Christian gathering. Today we sing two verses from ELW hymn #377 by Herbert Brokering and David Johnson. GREETING HYMN OF PRAISE gold NEXT SUNDAY, April 17 Lead Pastor Candidate Meet & Greet Reception On Sunday, April 17, Pastor Gary Sandberg and his wife Karen will be worshipping with us at both the 8:30 and 10:00 a.m. worship services, where he will be introduced to the congregation. Following each service, a Meet & Greet Reception is planned in the Fellowship Hall, where congregants are encouraged to drop by and introduce themselves. SUNDAY, April 24 Acts 9:1-20 Each of us has a story of meeting God s grace. Saul (later called Paul) was an ardent persecutor of all who followed the Way of Christ. This reading recounts the story of his transformation, beginning with an encounter with Jesus Christ on the way to Damascus. Revelation 5:11-14 The vision of John recorded in Revelation offers a glimpse of cosmic worship on the Lord s Day. At its center is the Lamb who was slain. PRAYER OF THE DAY Eternal and all-merciful God, with all the angels and all the saints we laud your majesty and might. By the resurrection of your Son, show yourself to us and inspire us to follow Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. 6 The Agnus Dei (Lamb of God) quotes John the Baptizer declaring Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! (John 1:29) Handel s Worthy is the Lamb is another composition which evokes John s vision from Revelation 7, and it ends with a grand setting of the word Amen. These two pieces serve as the final two choruses of Handel s Messiah; the famous Hallelujah Chorus is not the end of the piece! Every Sunday in worship we celebrate Jesus resurrection. The Sunday liturgy includes references to Easter readings: He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again, says the Apostles Creed. Christ has died. Christ is risen, we call out during the Eucharistic prayer. When we receive the dismissal, it is as if we are the women witnessing to the others: Go in peace. Share the good news.
