1 BETHANY LUTHERAN CHURCH Worship Meaningfully; Witness Intentionally; Grow Spiritually; Serve Purposefully; Care Resolutely; Fellowship Authentically TRANSFIGURATION OF OUR LORD February 7, :30 & 10:00 a.m. Transfiguration Sunday concludes the Epiphany season with another manifestation of God's glory, this time in the dazzling personage of Jesus. Witnesses to the brilliance will be unable to avoid reflecting that glory in the world. It was true for Moses, and it was doubtless true for Peter, James, and John. We pray that it will be true of all of us who see the glory of the Lord in the word and in the supper and who are being "transformed into the same image" by the Spirit of God. As worship begins we turn to face the Processional Cross which reminds us of Christ, the center of our life in whom we live and move and have our being. As the cross moves to the altar we, too, turn to visually follow its path to the focal point of our worship. Gathering PRELUDE Rigaudon from Cathedral Suite Gordon Young Silence is kept. CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS All may make the sign of the cross, as the presiding minister begins. Blessed be the holy Trinity, one God, who creates us and forms us, who redeems us and calls us, who unites us and sends us. Amen. Gathered in God s presence, let us confess our sin. The assembly kneels or stands. Silence is kept for reflection. Mighty and loving God, We confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We seek our own way. We divide the body of Christ. In your mercy, cleanse us and heal us. Let the words of our mouths, the thoughts of our hearts, and everything that we do be filled with faith, hope, and love. Amen. Hear the voice of Jesus: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me to proclaim release of the captives. In the name of Jesus Christ, I proclaim to you that your sins are forgiven and you are released. The joy of the Lord is your strength, and the gifts of the Holy Spirit are yours forever. Amen. The structure is simple: Each day gather your household and connect (Faith + Connect) with the questions offered for the week. Then read the Bible passage (Faith + Bible) assigned for the day (five days only) and discuss the reflection questions. There is a weekly service (Faith + Serve) opportunity as well as a prayer (Faith +Pray) for the week and a blessing (Faith + Bless) to offer each other at the close of your devotional time. May the word of God dwell in you richly this Lenten season as we focus on all what God has given us! Pick up the 40 Days of Giving Household Devotional at the Welcome Center. Boy Scout Sunday at Bethany Cub Scout Pack 711 and Boy Scout Troop 712 thank Bethany Lutheran Church for its ongoing support. Pack 711 has 35 members of elementary school age boys who participate in a wide variety of activities. Troop 712 has 50 scouts in 5th through 12th grade attending over 30 different schools. Interestingly, in the last two years 11 boys have attained Eagle Scout rank. This represents a record number of young men developing leadership skills, providing service on various projects, and having a lot of fun together. Over 1,000 service hours were logged in the last couple of years benefitting organizations far and wide. Projects include service projects at Bethany, building cook stoves for a village in India, as well as projects benefitting local schools, service organizations, camps, churches and parks. None of this would be possible without your support. Thank you! Lead Pastor Call Committee Update 10 The LPCC continues to make progress in its search for a new lead pastor. We have completed all first-round interviews in an online skype-format with a total of eight candidates who were submitted to the Call Committee either by Bethany members or by the Rocky Mountain Synod after an extensive national search. After prayerful deliberation, six of those candidates have been released from consideration based on the Committee s review and recommendation. We wish them God s blessings and are confident they will continue to faithfully serve as the hands and feet of Christ. The Committee is conducting additional face-to-face interviews and conversations with the remaining candidates. As necessary, we will pursue additional information to assist us in the discernment process including site visits, Bible studies, additional interviews and reference checks. We thank you for your continued patience and ask for your prayers on behalf of the Committee members, all candidates and their family members. We remain excited about the candidates and Bethany s future and look forward to sharing additional developments with the congregation in the future. PRAYER OF THE DAY Holy God, mighty and immortal, you are beyond our knowing, yet we see your glory in the face of Jesus Christ. Transform us into the likeness of your Son, who renewed our humanity so that we may share in his divinity, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. 3

4 II Corinthians 3:12-4:2 In his debates with the Corinthians, Paul contrasts the glory of Moses with the glory of Christ. The Israelites could not see Moses face because of the veil. But in Christ we see the unveiled glory of God and are transformed into Christ s likeness. Luke 9:28-43a The conversation about Jesus suffering and death is enclosed in a dazzling foreshadowing of the resurrection. God affirms Jesus identity, the disciples are stunned speechless, and Jesus resumes his mission with a demonstration of his power over evil. Word LESSON II Corinthians 3:12-4:2 Holy Bible pg. 190 (NT) Response after Lesson: Thanks be to God. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Response before Gospel: Glory to you, O Lord. GOSPEL Luke 9:28-43a Holy Bible pg. 71 (NT) Response after Gospel: Praise to you, O Christ. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION CHILDREN S MESSAGE/BLESSING OF THE CANDLES & ALTAR GUILD SERMON HYMN I Want to Walk as a Child of the Light Hymn #815 APOSTLES CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. THIS WEEK AT BETHANY...
