An usher will direct you when to come forward for the distribution. Receive the wafer in your hand then dip the wafer in the wine. A communion station with alcohol free wine and gluten free wafers (blue communion set) is available at the center aisle at every communion service. You may return by the opposite aisle of your section. Those who would like to come forward but do not wish to commune may ask the server for a blessing. 6 WORSHIP NOTES Kyrie: The word Kyrie comes from the Greek Kyrie eleison, which means Lord, have mercy. It is one of the oldest parts of the Western mass, possibly dating back as far as the first century. In the very early Roman church, the liturgy was celebrated in Greek. Gradually, Greek was replaced by Latin, however, for this part of the liturgy the Greek words remained. In classical settings of the Roman mass, the Kyrie typically has an ABA structure, with the first part of the composition using the words Lord, have mercy, the second part using the words Christ, have mercy, and the third part returning to the words Lord, have mercy. In modern Lutheran usage, the words Lord, have mercy are alternated with various petitions, usually sung by a cantor. Ubi Caritas: The most well-known setting of this ancient Latin hymn is by Maurice Durufle, which the Chancel Choir has performed numerous times in the past. Today the Chancel Choir performs for the first time a setting by Morton Lauridsen, which was composed in the year A translation of the Latin text is as follows: Ubi caritas et amor, Deus ibi est. Congregavit nos in unum Christi amor, Exultemus et in ipso jucundemur. Timeamus et amemus Deum vivum. Et ex corde diligamus nos sincere. Where there is charity and love, God is there. The love of Christ has gathered us together. Let us rejoice and be glad in it. Let us revere and love the living God. And with a sincere heart let us love one another. Love and Vines: Have you ever wondered where the phrase God is love originated? It s from today s Epistle lesson from I John; as a result the subject matter of our opening hymn and choir anthem is love. Today s Gospel lesson features the metaphor of Jesus being the true vine and our sermon hymn, sending hymn, and offertory response all make use of this imagery as well. In the Narthex you will see a board with 150 envelopes decorated by the youth, each with a different amount on it ($1-150). To participate, you choose an amount you would like to donate and in exchange you take the envelope with that number on it. Inside the envelope you will find a prayer request written by a mission trip participant, asking you to pray for something regarding our summer mission trips. We re hoping the envelopes will all be picked up by the end of May! Please stop by to find out more about our trips this summer, who will be attending, and what we will be doing! Be The Blessing: It s not too late to sign up! Bethany s annual Be The Blessing weekend of service is May 30 & 31. Sign up at the BTB table in the Fellowship Hall TODAY and on Sunday, May 10 or online at Adult Faith Formation: The Prodigal God So, what is a prodigal? And who s the biggest prodigal of them all? Join Pastor Russ and Ed Cleaver in Room 210 at 9:00 a.m. through May 17 to explore the parable of the prodigal son through a remarkable 6-part video series and book, The Prodigal God", by Timothy Keller. Newsweek called Keller a "C.S. Lewis for the twenty-first century. This series will encourage and challenge all of us to understand God s unconditional love and grace in a deeper way. Children s Sunday School classes meet from 9:00-10:15 a.m. Godly Play is for children 2 ½ - Kindergarten. Classes meet downstairs in the Bethany Early Childhood Center, rooms 103 (Kindergarten), 105 (Pre-K & K), 106 (Preschool) and 108 (ages 2-3). Music Openings are in Room 104. Good Coffee for a Good Cause The Global Mission Ministry Team is selling fair trade coffee, tea, and chocolate in the Narthex TODAY. Proceeds help small farmer growers in Latin America, Africa and Asia through Lutheran World Relief, Equal Exchange and SERRV International. Bethany Café Visit the coffee cart, run by Bethany s youth, in the Great Hall lobby TODAY. Proceeds help offset the cost of mission trips and support youth scholarships. THIS WEEK AT BETHANY... This coming week Pastor Paul will be at the Mt. Olivet Retreat Center ( Farmington, MN, leading the 5-day Phase III of a 6-month training program for interim pastors begun in October 2014 at Luther Seminary, St. Paul, MN. The program led by Pastor Paul, is in its 28th year and has 25 pastors returning from across the country to complete this step in their preparation to serve the church as intentional interim pastors. Pastor Paul's faculty colleague is Pastor Tim Drom, intentional interim senior pastor at Augustana Lutheran, Denver. Tim received his training from Pastor Paul in 1998 when he was serving on the ELCA's Pacifica Synod staff in Newport Beach, California. He has subsequently led the interim ministry program in the Pacifica Synod. Pastor Paul will be with his wife Susan over Mothers Day and returns to Bethany mid-morning on the 12th. Sunday, May 17, Family Worship at 9:00 a.m. followed by the Ice Cream Social at 10:00 a.m. and the Youth Carnival in the west courtyard from about 10:30 a.m. until 12:15 p.m. There will be water balloons, bouncy castles, face painting and much more. Lunch and snack items will also be available. Something new this year: NO PUNCHCARDS! We are asking for a free-will offering this year with a suggested donation of $20. Watch for a poster and youth with information in the Narthex. Beginning June 7, Sunday worship will move to 8:30 and 10:00 a.m. (two services) with fellowship time in the west courtyard between services. On Tuesdays at 11:30 a.m. there will be a prayer service in the Chapel and on Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. there will be worship followed by fellowship in the courtyard. It is the Ministry Council s hope that, in addition to continuing to offer a variety of worship opportunities, the new schedule will also allow for an increased time of fellowship between the services to chat with the Pastors, connect with an old friend, or even meet someone new!
