An usher will direct you when to come forward for the distribution. Receive the wafer in your hand then dip the wafer in the wine. A communion station with alcohol free wine and gluten free wafers is available at the center aisle at every communion service. You may return by the opposite aisle of your section. 5 WORSHIP NOTES New Wine in Old Wineskins: Our old hymnal, the Lutheran Book of Worship (sometimes referred to as the LBW or green book ) contained a total of 569 hymns. The new hymnal, entitled Evangelical Lutheran Worship, goes all the way up to hymn number 893. So there are obviously a substantial number of hymns that were not in the previous hymnal. Some of them are not newly composed, but are older hymns that could have, and perhaps should have, been in the LBW. A good example of this would be the majestic Christmas hymn, Once in Royal David s City. Many of the new hymns (both words and music) were written after 1978, which was the year the LBW was published. However, there are a substantial number of hymns in the ELW which are new texts, put together with old familiar tunes. There are two examples of this among today s hymns: The hymn of praise, Praise the One Who Breaks the Darkness, is sung to the hymntune Nettleton, which is generally sung with the words Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing. The sermon hymn Signs and Wonders is sung to the hymntune Freu dich sehr, which we normally hear with the Advent text Comfort, Comfort, Now My People. What Are All Those Weird Numbers? So how do you know whether a particular set of words could be paired up with a particular tune? The answer is in the string of numbers at the bottom of the page below every hymn. If you look at the bottom of the page under today s sermon hymn (#672), you will see this sequence of numbers: These numbers correspond to the number of syllables in each musical phrase: Signs and wonders lead the dancing contains 8 syllables; from the heart God frees from fear contains 7 syllables, and so on. A set of words can be matched with any tune that follows the same syllabic pattern. You May Have Noticed: There have been a few changes in the communion sets this summer this is an effort to make options available for all the different dietary needs God s children may have in our congregation. There are some who need alcohol free juice, and some who need gluten free wafers. We want to preserve the integrity of all who wish to participate in Holy Communion, and we are taking measures to ensure that communion at Bethany fulfills the needs of those present. Our goal is to maintain everyone s dignity as a beloved child of God and to ensure that those who need gluten free can access it, as well as those who need alcohol free can access it. The newest sets you will see are white, there are two of them, and one person will hold both just behind the servers in the center aisle. Each contains two wine cups, so that a person needing gluten free can have the proper wafer, and a choice of alcohol or alcohol free. The other will have regular wafers, and both options for juice, for those who wish alcohol free, but not necessarily gluten-free. The type is labeled on each set, but if you have questions, your server is able to help. We hope that this meal of God s Grace fills you, and reminds you of your baptismal identity, in whatever way you are consuming the body and blood of Christ. Bethany Cares Project You are invited to help Bethany Cares make care packages for the homeless we see on the side of the road. We will continue to take donations on Sunday mornings through August 9, and a box is available in the church office to collect during the week. Items needed include gallon ziplock bags, protein, cereal or granola bars, bottled water (16.9 oz. or smaller), fruit snacks, peanut butter crackers, applesauce, hard candies, anything non-perishable and easy to eat without utensils. Pick up a list of items at the Welcome Center. Cash donations are also welcome and will be used to purchase supplies. We will assemble packages again on July 26 and August 16. These families are our neighbors in Sheridan, Englewood and Littleton who need a little help getting their children ready for school this year. Can t make it to church on Sunday morning? On Tuesdays at 11:30 a.m. there is a prayer service in the Chapel and on Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. join us for an evening prayer service in the Chapel followed by fellowship in the courtyard. ELCA Youth Gathering On Wednesday, July 18, 10 of our youth along with 5 staff members and adult volunteers are heading to Detroit, MI, for five days of faith formation, worship, study, service and fun! Please keep them in your prayers this week as they broaden their experience of God s diverse world through travel. Summer Worship on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. in the Chapel! We are using a new Evening Prayer Service in the style of Holden Evening Prayer written for Bethany by our talented Director of Music, Rick Seaton. We are also using the book, Sacred Pathways, by Gary Thomas for inspiration. Thomas outlines 9 unique pathways people use to encounter God. Each week we will focus on a different pathway including Naturalists, Traditionalists, Intellectuals, Activists and Caregivers. The book is available at the Welcome Center for $15. We hope to see you there! Come Early (5:30 p.m.) on Wednesdays for a 'Simple Supper' All are invited to join the pastors for a simple supper before Evening Prayer. Conversation will revolve around the themes from Sacred Pathways being used in worship that evening. Deb Stauffer is organizing the salad bar; group members are invited (not required) to bring a salad ingredient to add to the buffet. It really is a simple supper! NEXT SUNDAY, July 19 Scripture Readings: The lessons are from Jeremiah 23:1-6 & Ephesians 2: The Gospel is from Mark 6:30-34, Former Bethany organist and Director of Music Ministry, Kathy Eggleston, will be our guest organist for worship on July 19 and 26, while Rick Seaton is on vacation. LOOKING AHEAD 11th Annual Colorado Rockies Faith Day Sunday, July 26. Michael W. Smith is this year s musical guest. Deepen your relationship with God You are invited to a Centering Prayer Introduction Workshop on Saturday, August 22 from 8:30 a.m.-noon in the Great Hall. The workshop will be facilitated by Liz VanLandingham and Eric Peter, who teach classes at the Denver Center for Contemplative Living. The practice of Centering Prayer prepares us to be open to God s divine presence and enter into a loving, intimate and everdeepening relationship, enabling us to bring an attitude of humility, listening and service to our daily activities. Lead Pastor Call Committee Update The Call Committee has finalized the Ministry Site Profile (MSP) and requested approval by the church s Executive Council early in July. Once approved, the MSP will be sent to the Office of the Bishop of the Rocky Mountain Synod along with other descriptive materials compiled by the Transition Team. On behalf of the Call Committee, the MSP provides the Synod with a thorough and honest articulation of Bethany s community, congregation, and the congregation s mission. The Office of the Bishop will then enter into a period of intentional prayer and discernment to identify potential lead pastor candidates to offer to the Call Committee for consideration. This phase is expected to take 4-6 weeks during which the Call Committee will prepare for the candidate interview process. Each Sunday, members of the Call Committee are available in the Narthex between services to answer questions and provide additional information about the call process. Additional information will also be provided on the website and in the Beacon in the coming months. 7
