2 Hans-André Stamm is a contemporary German organist and composer. His Echoes of Joy for trumpet and organ was written in Stamm, one of the leading modern interpreters of Bach s organ music, has posted many of his performances of Bach s and his own works on YouTube, and has also written extensively for films. The Gospel leads us into worship, as Jesus, The Good Shepherd, desires all people to have an abundant life. Gathering PRELUDE Echoes of Joy Hans-Andre Stamm WELCOME OPENING LITANY Please use the prelude as a quiet time to prepare yourself for worship. As we remember and tell God's stories, Open our hearts Help us to hear something new Grant us inquisitive minds and lively imaginations Our Gospel is John 10:7-10. Response before Reading: Glory to you, O Lord. So again Jesus said to them, "Very truly, I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. All who came before me are thieves and bandits; but the sheep did not listen to them. I am the gate. Whoever enters by me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly. The Gospel of our Lord. Response after Reading: Praise to you, O Christ. You may kneel as you are able or remain standing. Silence is kept for reflection. CONFESSION/FORGIVENESS Gracious God, you desire us to know you and to share your stories. You call us to rejoice as your creation, to live fully in your covenants and promises, to work together as your people for justice and freedom, and to love as you love. Help us, O God, to answer your call, "Here I am" We hide our pain, brokenness, and mistakes. We try to erase undesirable parts of our story. Forgive us for all the times we have failed to tell the whole story or times when we have stopped the story. God knows our whole story and loves us completely. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, I assure you that you are known, forgiven, and deeply loved. Any questions, contact Stephanie Webb, x16; Stephanie.webb@mosaicinfo.org Hearing Assistance Please see the Sound Tech in the sound booth at the rear of the Sanctuary if you need a hearing assistant device. The Hymn of Praise historically was the "Gloria in Excelsis" - "Glory to God in the Highest" - The Christmas song of the Angels. In 1978 Richard Hillert composed "This is the Feast" for the Lutheran Book of Worship. The setting we are singing today was written by Bethany's Director of Music and Organist, Rick Seaton. The text is from Revelation 5:12-13 and 19:5-9. As we sing, our voices are joined with the Heavenly Throng singing, "Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessings!" HYMN OF PRAISE 3

4 4 Psalm 46 is a song of thanks, sung by the people of Israel with gratitude for the mighty deeds of God. The Psalm is written in couplets or pairs - a poetic form meant to state what is happening and then say it again with even greater depth or force. God is for us, a refuge and strength - an abundant help in dire straights! I Love to Tell the Story The story begins with God. We cannot know God without stories. How can we know ourselves? We tell stories to know and be known. Christ came into the world as a story in motion - the Word made flesh. He went into the world recalling the ancient tales and sharing new parables everywhere he went. We cannot be the people of God without telling God's stories, and sharing these stories with each generation. We cannot tell God's stories without connecting with our own histories of faith. God's story is universal, and deeply personal. PRAYER OF THE DAY Gracious God, Come into our lives - into our stories - and into our worship O God of abundant life and promises, you are faithful. Lead us from lives of destruction and captivity into your promised peace. Give us grace to keep our promises. Give us faith to trust in you. Amen. Please be seated. Word PSALM Psalm 46 God for us is a refuge and strength an abundant help in dire straits, reachable with ease So we are not afraid when the land moves and the mountains topple into the heart of the sea Let its waters roar and seethe! Let mountains quake in its swell! There is a river whose channels gladden God's city, the Most High's holy accommodations. God is in her midst, she will not be toppled. God will help her at the break of morn Nations roar, kingdoms topple he lets go with his voice, the earth melts. The Yahweh of Hosts is with us, the God of Jacob is our haven. Come, see Yahweh's doings what desolations on earth he has wrought who makes wars cease to the ends of the earth the bow he breaks, the spear he snaps, wagons he burns in fire. Be still! Know that I am God I stand above the nations, I stand above the earth. The Yahweh of Hosts is with us the God of Jacob is our haven. LESSON Genesis 6:11-22; 7:11-18; 8:6-19; 9:8-13 Holy Bible pg. 6-8 (OT) SERMON/CHILDREN S SERMON HYMN OF THE DAY Thy Holy Wings Hymn #613 APOSTLES CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
