1 BETHANY LUTHERAN CHURCH Worship Meaningfully; Witness Intentionally; Grow Spiritually; Serve Purposefully; Care Resolutely; Fellowship Authentically FIFTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST June 28, :30 & 10:00 a.m. GGATHERING PRELUDE Trumpet Tune Suite Please use the prelude as a quiet time to prepare yourself for worship. arr. S. Drummond Wolff CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS All may make the sign of the cross, as the presiding minister begins. Blessed be the holy Trinity, + one God, the creator of wind and rain, field and ocean, the bread of life coming down from above, the power at work within us and this world. Amen. Before God and in the company of our sisters and brothers, let us confess our sin. The assembly kneels or stands. Silence is kept for reflection. God and Creator of all, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed. We have thought better of ourselves than others. We have told lies, said hurtful things, acted in ways we wish we could take back, and looked the other way when action was needed. In your mercy, O God, forgive us, cleanse us, and heal us, for the sake of Jesus, our Savior. Amen. If anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; everything has become new! In Christ, + you are a new creation: your sins are taken away and you are made new. Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ has forgiven you. Amen. The assembly stands. GATHERING HYMN God Is Here! Heal the hurt, console the bereaved and afflicted, protect the innocent and helpless, and deliver any who are still in peril; for the sake of your great mercy in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Call Committee for Lead Pastor Kicks Off After its appointment at the May 17 congregational meeting, the Call Committee embarked on a series of preparatory meetings. Important first steps included orientation and overview meetings with Interim Senior Pastor Paul Svingen and Pastor Sarah Moening of the Rocky Mountain Synod who will shepherd the process on behalf of the Synod. Members of the Call Committee, Executive and Ministry Councils, Transition Team, and Interim Pastor Debra Engquist then met together with Pastor Moening to review in detail the Transition Team report, working together to complete the Ministry Site Profile (MSP), which is the first step of the pastoral call process. Approximately 4-6 weeks after the MSP is submitted to the Synod (early July), candidates will be presented to the Call Committee by the Synod for consideration. If you have a Lead Pastor candidate that you would like to suggest for consideration by the Call Committee, forms are available at the Welcome Center and will be available on Bethany s website. During July, a more comprehensive communication program will be established to share the Call Committee s process and progress with the congregation. Throughout Bethany s journey to call a new Lead Pastor, your prayers on behalf of the committee and this endeavor are greatly appreciated.
8 Litany of Farewell for Pastor Paul N. Svingen Glenn Truglio, President, Bethany Lutheran Church: A church family is constantly changing. Loved ones come to the end of their lives. Individuals come and go in our church life. It is important and right that we recognize these times of passage...of endings and beginnings. Today we share the time of farewell and blessing with Pastor Paul N. Svingen whose term as our Interim Senior Pastor now ends. Pastor Paul: Today I thank Bethany Lutheran Church, its members and friends, for the love, the kindness, and the support shown to me these past ten months. I ask for your understanding and forgiveness for mistakes I may have made and for expectations unmet. I am grateful to God that so many here have graciously accepted my leadership. With deep joy I recall the many things that we have been able to accomplish together in these months, and with sadness those things not accomplished. As I leave, I carry with me many good memories of experiences we have shared together. The People: We receive your thankfulness..., and we offer our genuine forgiveness for any failures and our heartfelt thanks for all the accomplishments in our joint mission and ministry here. We now acknowledge your departure from this congregational ministry and we accept that you now leave us as our Interim Senior Pastor. We express our gratitude for your time among us and ask for your forgiveness for our shortcomings and sometimes flagging faith. Your influence on our lives will not leave us...even though you depart from us as our pastor. Pastor Paul: I forgive you for what may have been your failures and accept your gratitude, trusting that our time together, and our parting are pleasing to our forgiving God and to the risen Christ we are called to serve. Do you, the members and friends of Bethany Lutheran Church now release Pastor Paul Svingen from the responsibilities of Interim Senior Pastor? The People: We do, with the help of God. Do you offer your encouragement and support to Pastor Paul as he leaves our midst in preparation for a new congregational ministry at Trinity Lutheran Church in Stillwater, MN? The People: We do, with the help of God. Do you Pastor Paul, now release the members and friends of the Bethany Lutheran Church from turning to you and depending upon you for leadership and pastoral care? Pastor Paul: I do, with the help of God. Do you offer your encouragement and support for the continued mission and ministry here at Bethany Lutheran Church? Pastor Paul: I do, with the help of God. All: Let us pray: O God, whose everlasting love for us all is trustworthy, help each of us to trust the future which rests in your care. The time when we were together here in your name saw our laughter and tears, our hopes and disappointments. Guide us as we hold close these cherished memories, but move in new directions, until that time to come when we are completely one with you and with each other, in the name of Jesus Christ our risen Lord, we pray. Amen. Go now, Pastor Paul, with our blessings, surrounded by our love and led by the promises of God, the presence of Jesus Christ, and the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
