An usher will direct you when to come forward for the distribution. Receive the wafer in your hand then dip the wafer in the wine. A communion station with alcohol free wine and gluten free wafers is available at the center aisle at every communion service. You may return by the opposite aisle of your section. Those who would like to come forward but do not wish to commune may ask the server for a blessing. 5 WORSHIP NOTES Food in Scripture: The most common biblical image for divine mercy is food. In Genesis 1, the plants and trees that God created are given to humans as food. The Israelites memories of their nomadic years recalled a miraculous food, manna, which God sent to keep them alive in the wilderness. Religious rules commanded the faithful to share their food with the hungry and to abstain from eating with the wicked. The people of Israel themselves were likened to food that God had planted. Poems described the law of God as if it is nourishing food. Christ was born in Bethlehem, which means House of bread. In John s metaphoric theology, Christ is the bread of life. Panis Angelicus: Today s communion anthem was written by French composer César Franck, who lived from 1822 to Franck was an organist and composer who revitalized the genre of French organ music with a small but finely crafted set of masterpieces for the instrument. Franck s most famous vocal composition is Panis Angelicus, which takes its words from a hymn written by Saint Thomas Aquinas in the 13th century. A translation of the Latin follows: Panis angelicus Bread of the angels fit panis hominum; Is made bread for mankind; Dat panis cœlicus Gifted bread of Heaven figuris terminum: Of all imaginings the end; O res mirabilis! Summer Worship Schedule We continue our Sunday summer worship schedule with services at 8:30 and 10:00 a.m. and fellowship in the west courtyard between services. On Tuesdays at 11:30 a.m. there is a prayer service in the Chapel and on Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. join us for an evening prayer service in the Chapel followed by fellowship in the courtyard. This is a small group for singles - anyone of any age who normally eats by themselves on Sunday. On the fourth Sunday of the month we gather at the Welcome Center right after the 10:00 a.m. service. From there we journey to a nearby restaurant for food and fellowship. Join us! THIS WEEK AT BETHANY... God s Word for the Week Bible Study, Room 210. Mondays at 9:00 a.m. & Tuesdays at 7:00 a.m. 6 Centering Prayer Join us Tuesdays at 6:00 p.m. in Room 404 or Thursdays at 2:00 p.m. in the Bethany Library. Our current book is Everything Belongs by Richard Rohr. We begin with 20 minutes of silent prayer and then have our book discussion. Summer Worship on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. in the Chapel! We are using a new Evening Prayer Service written by our talented Director of Music, Rick Seaton. We are also using the book, Sacred Pathways, by Gary Thomas. Thomas outlines 9 unique pathways people use to encounter God. Each week we focus on a different pathway including Naturalists, Traditionalists, Intellectuals, Activists and Caregivers. The book is available at the Welcome Center for $15. Please join us! Come Early (5:30 p.m.) on Wednesdays for a 'Simple Supper' All are invited to join the pastors for a simple supper before Evening Prayer. Conversation will revolve around the themes from Sacred Pathways being used in worship that evening. Deb Stauffer is organizing the salad bar; group members are invited (not required) to bring a salad ingredient to add to the buffet. It really is a simple supper! Registration for small groups will start Sunday, August 9th in the Narthex. Be on the lookout for more information and get ready to sign up for a small group that Sunday! Confirmation Teachers! If you are interested in teaching a course during a 6-week session this year for Confirmation, please contact Tory (tory@bethany-denver.org) for more information. We are asking for a 6-week commitment on a Sunday morning or Wednesday evening and looking to place you in a course that fits your passion, interest, or calling! Scholarship Recognition Join us on Sunday, August 9, when we will celebrate our Lutheran College scholarship recipients for ! Eleven Bethany members are receiving scholarships from the Bethany Foundation for the coming school year. Included in the group is Brenda Greenwald, who will be attending Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary, beginning her journey toward becoming a pastor in the ELCA. Help us celebrate them by wearing your Lutheran College t-shirts and sweat shirts that day! Stuff for Stef! We say farewell to Intern Stefanie on Sunday, August 16. We are asking the congregation to bring items for the Bethany Cares packages on that day to thank her for her ministry among us for the past year. Also, stop by the reception out in the west courtyard between services to wish her well and say good-bye. Deepen your relationship with God You are invited to a Centering Prayer Introduction Workshop on Saturday, August 22 from 8:30 a.m.-noon in the Great Hall. The workshop will be facilitated by Liz VanLandingham and Eric Peter, who teach classes at the Denver Center for Contemplative Living. The practice of Centering Prayer prepares us to be open to God s divine presence and enter into a loving, intimate and everdeepening relationship, enabling us to bring an attitude of humility, listening and service to our daily activities. Diapers for DenUM Bethany is again partnering with DenUM (Denver Urban Ministries, a Be the Blessing partner organization) to supply diapers for young families. We will be collecting diapers on Sundays August 23 & 30 but they can be dropped off at church anytime between now and August 30. The larger sizes are most needed, but any donation is greatly appreciated. If you are interested in going to DenUM to sort the diapers on Sunday, September 6 from 10: :30 p.m., please contact Tammy Craven at Advanced Directives On Sunday, August 23, the Health and Wellness Cabinet hosts a presentation entitled, Documents and Decision Makers in the Great Hall at 9:45 am. Andrea Fraser, BSN, RN, PCCN, former director of Acute Care Services at Castle Rock Adventist Health Campus, will be the presenter. Many people think that advanced directives are only for those who are ill or elderly however we all know that unexpected events occur. It is truly a gift to your loved ones to make your wishes known and ease their decision making in a time of stress. Bethany MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) is seeking caring and compassionate childcare workers for their Moppets program. Bethany Fund Update Received July 19 $ 26,445 July MTD $ 81,437 Fiscal YTD $ 81,437 Lead Pastor Call Committee Update The Call Committee has finalized the Ministry Site Profile (MSP) and it has been approved by Bethany s Executive Council. Following approval, the MSP was sent to the Office of the Bishop of the Rocky Mountain Synod along with other descriptive materials compiled by the Transition Team. On behalf of the Call Committee, the MSP provides the Synod with a thorough and honest articulation of Bethany s community, congregation, and the congregation s mission. The Office of the Bishop will now enter into a period of intentional prayer and discernment to identify potential lead pastor candidates to offer to the Call Committee for consideration. This phase is expected to take 4-6 weeks during which the Call Committee will prepare for the candidate interview process. Each Sunday, members of the Call Committee are available in the Narthex between services to answer questions and provide additional information about the call process. Additional information will also be provided on the website and in the Beacon in the coming months. 7
