Page Two All Saints November 1, 2009 The Cover This tapestry from the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels was woven in Belgium using Egyptian cotton and digital files from the artist. The artist John Nava who was commissioned to depict the Communion of Saints said the message of the image and the message of the Church is a message of hope, redemption and meaning. Nava believes these are ideas that have been frequently dismissed in conventional modern art. Nava would like people viewing the tapestries to see the humanity of these figures and feel a sense of connection to themselves. REFLECTIONS ON ALL SOULS DAY Mended Vessels, Clean Hearts theologians stress Purgatory not so much as a place as a process. That Purgatory involves suffering neither the pope nor well grounded theologians deny. But Purgatory is not solitary confinement. Purgatory is a process open to the prayers and good works of others. Purgatory s goal is divine reclamation and human restoration. Pope Benedict provides a concrete illustration. He speaks of human imperfections and failures as brokenness. All Souls Day is rich in spiritual meaning. It is a "Day of the Dead" with a double focus - - the doctrine of Purgatory and the Communion of Saints. The Council of Florence (1438-1445) summarized the historical development of Purgatory and its relation to the Church Triumphant and Militant. If those who are truly penitent depart from this life in the charity of God before they have had made satisfaction by worthy fruits of penance for their sins of commission and omission, their souls are cleansed by purgatorial suffering after death. And the suffrages of the living-- namely, the Sacrifice of Mass, prayers, alms-deeds, and other works of piety- - are profitable to those departed souls for the relief of their sufferings. In our own time, Pope Benedict XVI clearly and pastorally describes Purgatory as the inwardly necessary process of transformation in which a person becomes capable of Christ, capable of God, and thus capable of unity with the whole communion of saints. Because of a highly flawed perception of Purgatory as "hell with an escape hatch or as "God s hospital, it is significant that the pope and other modern God can pick up the broken pieces and make something of them. In any case, we need a final cleansing, a cleansing by fire to be exact, in which the gaze of Christ, so to say, burns us free from everything, and only under this purifying gaze are we fit to be with God, and able, then, to be at home with Him we don t want to be, to use an image from Scripture, a pot that turned out wrong, that has to be thrown away; we want to be able to be put right. Purgatory basically means that God can put the pieces back together again. Pope Benedict s vision of Purgatory also includes horizontal perspective. What may be unbearable in one person and intolerant in another, Purgatory can strip away. Thus, in each a pure heart is revealed, and we can see that we all belong together in one enormous symphony of being. The Catholic celebration of All Souls Day unites past, present, and future, the living and the dead on November 2. - Attend Mass. - Visit the Cemetery. - Look through the family album and talk about loved ones. - Pray for deceased family members, friends and benefactors. - Pray for the forgotten dead. - Fr. Page Five All Saints November 1, 2009 CATHOLICS COME HOME The Archdiocese of Chicago, with the Dicoeses of Rockford and Joliet, are undertaking the Catholics Come Home initiative beginning with a media campaign from mid-december to mid-january. In preparation for the invitation, welcome and accompaniment phases of the initiative, we are seeking members of the parish to be part of the Catholics Come Home committee. If you are willing to listen to the stories of those who have been away from us, offer a warm welcome and help assist them in their return to the sacraments and the life of the Church, please call Deacon Paul or Dee Stanton, 847/966-1180. We would like to hold a first planning meeting very soon. In the meantime all are asked to pray for this endeavor and for our brothers and sisters whose return we await. SPIRITUAL LIFE COMMISSION The Spiritual Life Commission will meet at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 5 th. Agendas have been mailed out. PURGATORIAL SOCIETY All Souls Day envelopes, to enroll the names of deceased loved ones into the Purgatorial Society, can be found at the doors of the church. Those in the Purgatorial Society are remembered at a weekday Mass each week. Kindly place your envelope in the collection on All Souls Day. BOOK OF LIFE Parishioners may inscribe the names of deceased family members and friends, particularly those who died this past year, in the Book of Life, which will be located near the baptismal font beginning today. Those whose funeral Masses were held here at St. Isaac Jogues since last All Souls Day are already inscribed in the book. We will remember all those in the Book of Life during the Prayer of the Faithful throughout the month of November. We also pray for those who grieve the passing of their loved ones from this life and embrace them with the hope of eternal life which we have because of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ our Lord. TO COMFORT AND REMEMBER Parishioners who have experienced the death of a family member or friend in the past year or who are observing the death anniversary of someone dear to them are invited to the annual Bereavement Prayer Service on Saturday, November 21 st at 11:00 a.m. in Church. The service will include an honoring of the memory of those who have died with a calling of their names and the giving of a small remembrance to those who grieve their passing. If you plan on attending the Prayer Service and would like your spouse, family member or friend s name called, please contact the RE office, 847/966-1180, by Wednesday, November 18 th, and give the name and its spelling. These names will also be included in the Prayer Service booklet. After that date you may still call in the name and participate in the service, but we will be unable to include it in the booklet. You are also welcome to bring a photo of your loved one to be placed on a table during the service. All are welcome to be part of this time of prayer as we comfort, support, and encourage one another in the sure and certain hope Christ s Resurrection gives. Breast Cancer Network of Strength (BCNS) offers some tips. Keep the lines of communication open. Be a good listener & be careful of what you say. Unless you are a breast cancer survivor, don t say, I know how you feel. Instead of a generic offer of help, ask What are the things you hate doing the most and do that task! Go to MD appointments with her. You, thus, can increase your knowledge & act as a second set of ears (take notes). You might help her form questions or seek out treatment options. Learn more about breast cancer by visiting reputable web sites, cancer resource centers or calling organizations such as the American Cancer Society (ACS) & BCNS. Local hospitals, cancer resource centers like Wellness Place (Palatine) & Cancer Wellness Center (Northbrook), the ACS & BCNS also may offer support programs for family & friends. Finally, you might become the contact person. You could be the source of a phone or e-mail tree that cuts down on inquiries & streamline communications with family, friends & colleagues. Alzheimer s/ Dementia Caregivers Support Group The next meeting of the Alzheimer s/ Dementia Caregivers Support Group is this Thursday, Nov. 4 at 7PM in the Holy Family Room. Page Nine All Saints November 1, 2009 National Day of Concern at SJB The students and teachers at St. John Brebeuf School, along with The Chicago Public Schools and the Archdiocese of Chicago, participated in the nationwide National Day of Concern. Following the shootings of recent years, this is a day of national observance in the hope of reversing the tide of violence in this country. It is also our hope that by making a common promise on a common day, young people will realize the multiplication effect of individual decisions to end gun violence. Students and teachers reaffirmed our own responsibility for making this country safer from violence. On the National Day of Concern, we discussed the issue of violence in our country and pledged individually to use our collective power toward change. Our students signed a poster on each grade level, to be kept in the halls of SJB for the remainder of the school year as a reminder of the role each of us must play to affect change. We have tried to keep close track of these names for our Bulletin as they are made available to us. However, now we face an important privacy issue, very much like the issues faced by hospitals, health institutions, and certainly by other parishes. We cannot (by law) publicly let our parish community know the health status of any of our members without their permission. We appreciate the fact that often friends, neighbors, and acquaintances wish to do something special for a person who is ill, and ask to place their name on the list to be prayed for. While their intentions are surely good, we simply can no longer accept names in this manner. We will institute a new process regarding calling in names for the Bulletin list. Names for the sick list placed in the Bulletin have to be called in by the person who is ill, or by a member of their family. At the time they call in the name, they will be asked whether they are the sick person him/ herself, or a member of their family, and if they give permission for the name to be placed on the list. They will be asked for the correct spelling of the sick person's name. If a family member, they will be required to give their name for our records. Thank you for your patience regarding this new process. We wish to do all we can to offer our parish community the opportunity to offer prayers for those who are ill but we must also be cognizant of the fact that all members of our congregation are entitled to their privacy in this regard.
