2 Page Two Sixth Sunday of Easter May 9, 2010 FROM THE PASTOR a son, and shall name Him Emmaunel, a name that means, "God is with us. This representation of the praying Madonna with Christ within her is known as the "Virgin of the Sign." Perhaps one of the most celebrated icons of this genre is in Moscow's Tretyakov Gallery. Orthodox Christians interpret the icon as displaying the inseparability of the Mother and the Son of God. Christ shares Mary s humanity and Mary shares Christ' s divine glory MOTHER OF GOD, TEACH US TO PRAY In 1988, Russia and Ukraine celebrated a Millennium of Christianity. I was part of a predominantly Russian Orthodox pilgrimage. How odd it seemed to be so conspicuously Christian in countries that were still officially atheist! As the night train from Moscow slowly approached Kiev, we saw the Golden domes of the city's great monastery and the 12th century Church of St. Sophia. I shall never forget St. Sophia. Dominating the grey stone interior was a thirty-three foot high mosaic of the Mother of God with her hands outstretched in prayer. Mary at prayer reflected the Church at prayer. Christ within her became a sign of present hope and future triumph. An inscription in Greek seemed prophetic: God is in her and will not abandon her. May God support her each and every day. The image in St. Sophia of the Mother of God at prayer is an ancient artistic representation. The "orans" position- -praying with outstretched hands- - can be found in the art of the catacombs. As early as the 6th century, the Mother of God, in a Coptic fresco, is shown as an orante. In the development of this theme, Christ was often depicted within a medallion to symbolize that He is within Mary's womb as the fulfillment of Isaiah s prophecy to King Ahaz (Isaiah 7): the Lord Himself shall give you this sign: the Virgin shall be with child, and bear The style of the "Virgin of the Sign" is also called "PIatyera" (the Ample One). It refers to a hymn to the Virgin in the Liturgy of St. Basil the Great: "For He made your womb a throne and made it greater than the heavens." Thus, "The Lord whom the heavens could not contain is contained by the Virgin. On this Mother' s Day, I see in the image of the "Virgin Orans" not only a model for prayer, but a TEACHER of prayer. In the Eastern Church, the Virgin Orans is placed in the dome of the apse, behind and overlooking the altar and the worshipping assembly. It is most significant because Mary presents Christ to the world and remains the greatest exemplar of prayer. Who better to teach us all? Mother's Day also reminds me of my own mother and a very sentimental hymn, "Lovely Lady Dressed in Blue." When I was very little, my mother helped me to memorize the hymn for kindergarten or first grade. My mother could not sing very well, but I cherish the memory of her trying, mostly for my sake. Today, I share with you a great truth in a beautiful icon and a sentimental hymn, Mary is one who teaches us to pray! I believe that, like most good mothers, Mary can teach that best! 4 Page Four Sixth Sunday of Easter May 9, 2010 Financial Update This past week s collection came close to our budget. While close, the collection still fell short of our budget by $691. This brings us to a shortfall for the year of $21,805. On a brighter note the Easter collection now stands at $21,970, just $30 short of the goal of $22,000. Our thanks to all our parishioners who have continued their generous support of the parish with their time, talent and treasure in these difficult times. The Women s Center is selling beautiful bouquets of fresh flowers after all Masses TODAY in the Holy Family Room. You ll find plenty to choose from roses, carnations, and mixed floral arrangements. Each bouquet is wrapped in tissue and ready to present to that loving woman. The proceeds from your purchase will be used to help teen girls and young women who are in a crisis pregnancy situation and need assistance. Last year The Women s Centers of Greater Chicagoland provided compassionate counseling, social services referrals and material goods assistance to over 5,000 women facing crisis pregnancies. Since its founding in 1984 The Women s Centers have saved more than 33,000 babies, and their mothers, from the tragedy of abortion. Andrew Luczak, will celebrate his 40 th Anniversary of Ordination to the Priesthood of Jesus Christ with a Mass of Thanksgiving at 12 Noon on Pentecost Sunday, May 23 rd, followed by a reception in the Holy Family Room. We hope you will come to praise God for the gift of the Holy Spirit, to give thanks for Fr. Luczak s priestly ministry to God s people, and to express your good wishes to Father at the reception that follows in the Holy Family Room until 3:30 p.m.

5 Page Five Sixth Sunday of Easter May 9, 2010 USHERS AND SACRISTANS NEEDED We are looking for friendly individuals who would be willing to serve as Ushers. Among their responsibilities each week are to greet people, take up the collection, see to the order of our processions, offer assistance as needed, etc. We are in particular need of help at the 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Masses. We also welcome individuals who would like a more behind the scenes involvement as sacristans. The sacristans see to the cleaning of church and vessels. There are four teams, so each team is on once a month. All of them would appreciate additional help at this time. To discuss your possible involvement, please call 847/ and leave a message for Mark Duval, Usher Coordinator, Helene Kowalik, Sacristan Coordinator or Dee Stanton. READINGS FOR THE SOLEMNITY OF THE ASCENSION OF THE LORD Acts 1:1-11 Psalm 47:2-3, 6-9 Ephesians 1:17-23 Luke 24:46-53 SPIRITUAL LIFE COMMISSION The Spiritual Life Commission will meet Tuesday, May 11, at 7:30 p.m. in the Religious Education Office. Parishioners who might be interested in joining the commission s work are welcome to attend or to call the RE Office at 847/ Agenda includes next year s Parish Mission, Lent series, and other spiritual/evangelization events. EDUCATION RE NEWS *The RE Students, Catechists and Assistants invite their families and interested parishioners to our last prayer service for this season. It will be at 7:00 p.m. and led by Mrs. Burdi s First Grade Class. Following the service the children will return to their rooms for celebrations and evaluations. They will be dismissed at the usual time of 8:00 p.m. *Room Parents, Catechists and Assistants who have not yet turned in their evaluations are asked to do so this week. *Families who have a balance due to the RE Program for tuition, sacrament fees, etc., are asked to send their payment in as soon as possible. If there is a financial difficulty, please call Dolores Stanton, 847/ , to discuss options. *Registration for the RE Program begins this Monday, May 10 th, 7:30-8:00 p.m. in the Holy Family Room. New families are welcome to come and register that evening too! Returning families need to fill out the appropriate form for (these were mailed). If you are bringing another child into the program, you will need to fill out a student form and provide a copy of the new child s baptismal certificate (if not baptized here at St. Isaac Jogues Parish). A partial tuition payment would be appreciated, if possible. Returning families are to have their completed registration materials in by June 15 th. After that date a late fee of $25 will be added and after August 1 st it is a $35 late fee. If you think you might be moving but are unsure, it is better to register now and withdraw later. Please remember that in order to pay the parishioner tuition rate you must be registered in the parish and using your Sunday envelopes and/ or giving time in at least one of our parish ministries/works. Otherwise you are charged the non-active/nonparishioner rate.

6 Page Six Sixth Sunday of Easter May 9, 2010 New families will need to fill out appropriate family and student forms, provide a copy of each child s baptismal certificate (if not baptized here at St. Isaac Jogues Parish) and provide a letter or report card from the parish or Catholic school your child previously attended for religious education (if applicable). Nonparishioners are welcome but do pay a higher tuition. Kindergarten classes meet on Sunday morning, 10:30-11:30 a.m. and Grs. 1-8 (Confirmation Year II) meet on Monday evenings, 6:45-8:00 p.m. Students must participate in religious education classes (in an RE Program or Catholic School) for at least two years prior to receiving a sacrament. Families are strongly encouraged to send their children to religious education every year to assist them in their faith development and formation. Families who have children with special needs or older children who have not yet celebrated First Reconciliation, First Eucharist, etc. are encouraged to talk with us to see what options are available for your children s participation. 7 Page Seven Sixth Sunday of Easter May 9, 2010 Mental Illness: A Series Part 1 of 4 In an effort to raise awareness, my articles this month will deal with this subject. According to NAMI the National Alliance on Mental Illness, mental illnesses are medical conditions that disrupt a person s thinking, feeling, mood, ability to relate to others and daily functioning. (1) They are serious medical illnesses affecting 1 in 17 Americans, with one in four adults experiencing a mental health disorder in a given year. (1) Ten percent of US kids & teens have a diagnosable disorder. (1) Serious mental illnesses include major depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, panic disorder, post traumatic stress disorder and borderline personality disorder. (1) Over 90% of those who suicide likely suffered from one of these disorders. (2) The illnesses cross all age, ethnic, denominational groups & income levels. The young & old are especially vulnerable. Minorities with mental illnesses tend to have less access to care & what they receive is lacking. (2) In a given year, only about 33% of adults & half of kids needing mental health services will get them. (2) Twenty to 25 percent of jail or prison inmates have a recent history of a mental disorder. (2) Left unmanaged, mental illness exacts a toll disability, unemployment, substance abuse, homelessness, inappropriate incarceration, suicide and wasted lives. (1) The good news is that these conditions are treatable. With medication, psychological interventions & social support, between 70 and 90 percent of individuals have significant reduction of symptoms and improved quality of life. (2) More next week! There will be two arrangements each week. Your name and intention will be listed in the Bulletin. The cost of a flower arrangement will be $ Dates fill up quickly, so please book well in advance. Please call the Rectory at to arrange the date to make your remembrance special! The Mass Book is now open. Anyone wishing to reserve Masses for loved ones or special intentions may do so. Please note: we will take only one intention for each liturgy. We suggest a $10.00 stipend for each Mass. According to the Code of Canon Law 948: Separate Masses must be applied for the intentions of those for whom an individual offering, even if small, has been made and accepted. What is normative in the practice of the Church is that there be separate individual Masses offered for individual intentions. Therefore, the practice of combining individual intentions on a regular basis has ceased at St. Isaac Jogues Parish.

ISAAC JOGUES MEN S CLUB In the mid1990s, a heavily bearded, bespectacled Robin Williams appeared on Late Night with David Letterman, whose host was clearly taken aback. Letterman inquired as to why the wild look. Uncharacteristically subdued, the usually manic comic responded that he was producing and starring in a movie about a most extraordinarily compassionate man, Damien, the Leper Priest of Moloka'i. Some saints transcend religious and ethnic boundaries to touch the heart that beats in each human being: Francis of Assisi; Mother Teresa; and, though Williams' film was never completed, his admiration speaks, as does Damien's statue outside the capitol in Honolulu, of this newest saint's universal appeal. Far from his native Flanders' idyllic beauty and rich culture, Damien volunteered to bear Christ's light into Moloka'i's bleak leper colony, building decent homes, opening schools, establishing clinics, planting farms, sharing the sufferings and the social stigma of those with whom he delighted to identify: "We lepers," he would proudly say when finally he contracted leprosy. Saint Damien challenges us to identify the lepers of our own day, to examine our compassion for and our identification with them. - Peter Scagnelli J. S. We have tried to keep close track of these names for our Bulletin as they are made available to us. However, now we face an important privacy issue, very much like the issues faced by hospitals, health institutions, and certainly by other parishes. We cannot (by law) publicly let our parish community know the health status of any of our members without their permission. We appreciate the fact that often friends, neighbors, and acquaintances wish to do something special for a person who is ill, and ask to place their name on the list to be prayed for. While their intentions are surely good, we simply can no longer accept names in this manner. We will institute a new process regarding calling in names for the Bulletin list. Names for the sick list placed in the Bulletin have to be called in by the person who is ill, or by a member of their family. At the time they call in the name, they will be asked whether they are the sick person him/ herself, or a member of their family, and if they give permission for the name to be placed on the list. They will be asked for the correct spelling of the sick person's name. If a family member, they will be required to give their name for our records. Thank you for your patience regarding this new process. We wish to do all we can to offer our parish community the opportunity to offer prayers for those who are ill but we must also be cognizant of the fact that all members of our congregation are entitled to their privacy in this regard.
