2 Page Two Dedication of the Lateran Basilica November 9, 2008 FROM THE PASTOR Dedication of the Lateran Basilica in Rome What is the name of the pope's cathedral? If you said the Vatican, or St. Peter's, you were off by a few miles, since the answer is the Basilica of St. John, the Lateran, the Mother Church of all the churches of the world and the cathedral of the Diocese of Rome. It takes its name from the Lateran family, the Trumps of their day, who somehow ran afoul of the Emperor Nero. He seized all their property, including their vast Roman palace and estate. We don't know how Plautius displeased Nero so badly, but eventually all the Lateran property came to Constantine, the first Christian emperor, through his wife, Fausta. Early in the fourth century, when Christianity was at last legalized, Constantine gave the property to the church. Soon the great meeting halls were expanded and adapted. IN MEMORIAM : The Month of All Souls During November, visiting the cemetery and praying for the dead can be somber, yet consoling, customs. Last week I was invited to accompany a group of teachers, parents, and students from the Ignacy Paderewski Polish School on an All Souls pilgrimage. Most of my ancestors are buried at St. Adalbert. And St. Adalbert and Maryhill Cemeteries also have interesting Polish military memorials. Over the centuries, the church building has been sacked by armies, ruined by fire, torn down, and rebuilt. The oldest and most unchanged part of the Lateran is a vast, separate baptistery with steps leading down to a huge green basalt pool. Imagine what a triumphal moment the dedication of this public church building was for a community that had worshiped in secret for so long! Today's feast is really about the tradition of consecrating space for worship, and so by extension, a feast for our parish church building and, given the beautiful second reading, for its baptistery as well.

3 Page Three Dedication of the Lateran Basilica November 9, 2008 At the entrance of St. Adalbert Cemetery, there is an impressive memorial to the victims of the Katyn Forest massacre. At Katyn an estimated 14,000 Polish officers and civil officials were brutally slain in April of A mass grave was discovered by German troops in April of While the Soviets accused the Germans, evidence has shown that the Soviets were guilty. St. Adalbert s Katyn Memorial presents a striking depiction of a pieta beneath an imposing black granite cross. The Blessed Virgin holds the body of a murdered Polish officer. We learned that the sculptor was born on September 1, 1939 the day Poland was invaded by the Nazis. Tragically, his father saw him once for only an hour before joining his regiment and, eventually, becoming one of the thousands killed at Katyn. Through the weekend of All Saints and All Souls many paid their respects at the Katyn Memorial as we did. At dusk on Sunday, the Memorial was decorated with flags, flowers, and many votive candles. Our group also visited the graves of Aloysius Mazewski, a civic leader and President of the Polish National Alliance and Irena Zarczynski, an esteemed founder and benefactor of the Paderewski School. My special sharing was a visit to the graves of my mother s family. The personal history of the Karwatas reflects the experience of most Polish immigrants. They found strength in their faith and love of freedom. They were honorable, hardworking citizens. They emphasized education, service to God and country, and tradition. I was proud to share that with the group. Later, at Maryhill Cemetery, we paused at another monument one dedicated to Polish veterans of World War II. Of special interest was the heroism and distinguished service of the Poles at Monte Cassino, where casualties exceeded 3,500. Throughout this month of November, pray for all the faithful departed. I hope that my comments will encourage your own prayerful response to the Holy Souls not only this month, but throughout the year. May they rest in peace! -Fr. Luczak

4 Page Four Dedication of the Lateran Basilica November 9, 2008 SPIRITUAL LIFE ALTAR SERVERS There is a meeting for ALL ALTAR SERVERS this Monday, November 10, at 6 p.m. in church. There are a few changes to discuss and everyone is expected to attend. Please call Mrs. Stanton, 847/ , if you have questions ahead of time. BOOK OF LIFE Parishioners may inscribe the names of deceased family members and friends, particularly those who died this past year, in the Book of Life, which is located near the baptismal font. Those whose funeral Masses were held here at St. Isaac Jogues since last All Souls Day are already inscribed in the book. We will remember all those in the Book of Life during the Prayer of the Faithful throughout the month of November. We also pray for those who grieve the passing of their loved ones from this life and embrace them with the hope of eternal life which we have because of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. TO COMFORT AND REMEMBER Parishioners who have experienced the death of a family member or friend in the past year or who are observing the death anniversary of someone dear to them are invited to the annual Bereavement Prayer Service on Sunday, November 23 rd, at 3:00 p.m. in Church. The service will include an honoring of the memory of those who have died with a calling of their names and the giving of a small remembrance to those who grieve their passing. If you plan on attending the Prayer Service and would like your spouse, family member or friend s name called, please contact the RE Office, 847/ , by Wednesday, November 19 th, and give the name and its spelling. These names will also be included in the Prayer Service booklet. After that date you may still call in the name and participate in the service, but we will be unable to include it in the booklet. You are also welcome to bring a photo of your loved one to be placed on a table during the service. All parishioners are welcome to be part of this time of prayer as we comfort, support and encourage one another in the sure and certain hope Christ s Resurrection gives. Hospitality will follow in the Holy Family Room. LITURGICAL MINISTERS GATHERING The annual Liturgical Ministers Gathering will be on Tuesday, November 18 th, at 7:30 p.m. in the Holy Family Room. Please note that Eucharistic Ministers, Lectors, and Ushers will have ministry meetings beginning at 6:45 p.m. (Ushers) and 7 p.m. (EM and Lector).

Today s passage is part of a lengthy poem which praises the virtues of a good wife and mother. I THESSALONIANS: Paul and the early Christians expected the immediate Second Coming of Christ. Today, as he concludes his first letter to the Thessalonians, Paul reminds them to be prepared for this. His message is encouraging, not frightening. ********************************************************************************** EDUCATION RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS *The signed permission slip for the First Reconciliation Retreat is due back to the RE Office or your child s catechist by Monday, November 10 th. *Food and monetary donations for our Thanksgiving Service Project are to be brought to class Nov. 10 or 17. Each class was assigned a particular item for the Thanksgiving baskets. Anything extra your family can provide for this project, which will also assist the St. Vincent DePaul food pantry will be greatly appreciated. Thank you! *The First Reconciliation Retreat will be on Saturday, November 15, 1:00-3:30 p.m. in the Holy Family Room. A parent or guardian is encouraged to attend. YEAR OF PAUL SERIES St. Isaac Jogues Parish will host a four-part series spread throughout this year dedicated to learning and understanding more about St. Paul, Apostle to the Gentiles. All are invited to the first evening on Tuesday, November 18 th, at 7:30 p.m. in the Holy Family Room in conjunction with the liturgical ministers gathering. St. Paul The Man, His World and His Mission is a multimedia presentation given by Mr. Joseph Durepos, author of the book A Still More Excellent Way. Free will offerings will be appreciated and copies of the book will be on sale. All are welcome!

On Saturday, Oct. 25, members of our parish family attended the Healing Mass and received the Sacrament of Anointing. A number of people were responsible for making it happen. Thanks go to Fr. Andrew, the priests who concelebrated, our staff and deacon community, Music Ministry, Liturgy writers, sacristans, Ministers of Care, Confirmation II students and Polish School. Sessions will be set on the quarter hour from 8:30AM through 1:15PM. Road to Recovery The American Cancer Society (ACS) needs volunteers for their Road to Recovery Program. Through Road to Recovery, rides to and from treatment appointments are provided to cancer patients lacking transportation. Volunteers can offer as much or as little of their time each month as they wish. Schedules are flexible. Interested parties need a reliable vehicle, good driving record and proof of insurance. ISAAC JOGUES MEN S CLUB The annual Memorial Mass for our deceased members will be held Thursday, November 20th at 7PM in the church. Father Andrew Luczak will preside with Bob O Keefe and Rod Ranola assisting. After Mass we will gather in the church hall for our feast & raffle. This year turkey coupons will be given for attendance and Calcutta. This is also our annual fund raising time for St. Vincent de Paul. So bring your donation for the silent auction and support our club s favorite charity. The dues remain the same, $25.00 for the year. ST. JOHN BREBEUF CRAFT FAIR On Sunday, November 16, St. John Brebeuf Catholic Women's Club will host its annual HOLIDAY CRAFT FAIR. It will be held from 8:00 AM until 3:00PM in the new Parish Ministry Center, 8305 N. Harlem, Niles. St. John Brebeuf facilities are handicap accessible. The HOLIDAY CRAFT FAIR will feature a wide variety of seasonal and year-round handmade items created by individual crafters. 9 Page Nine Dedication of the Lateran Basilica November 9, 2008 Martin was born around 315 in the Roman province of Pannonia (modern-day Hungary). The son of a Roman soldier, he too followed a military career and was drawn to Christianity. While stationed near Amiens, he gave half of his cloak to a nearly naked beggar and the next night dreamed Jesus wore it. This vision convinced him to request release from military service and to seek baptism. He became bishop of Tours, acclaimed by the clergy and the people alike. He died at Candes, near Tours, in 297. We have tried to keep close track of these names for our Bulletin as they are made available to us. However, now we face an important privacy issue, very much like the issues faced by hospitals, health institutions, and certainly by other parishes. We cannot (by law) publicly let our parish community know the health status of any of our members without their permission. We appreciate the fact that often friends, neighbors, and acquaintances wish to do something special for a person who is ill, and ask to place their name on the list to be prayed for. While their intentions are surely good, we simply can no longer accept names in this manner. We will institute a new process regarding calling in names for the Bulletin list. Names for the sick list placed in the Bulletin have to be called in by the person who is ill, or by a member of their family. At the time they call in the name, they will be asked whether they are the sick person him/ herself, or a member of their family, and if they give permission for the name to be placed on the list. They will be asked for the correct spelling of the sick person's name. If a family member, they will be required to give their name for our records. Thank you for your patience regarding this new process. We wish to do all we can to offer our parish community the opportunity to offer prayers for those who are ill but we must also be cognizant of the fact that all members of our congregation are entitled to their privacy in this regard.
