1 SAINT ISAAC JOGUES PARISH 8149 Golf Road ~ Niles, IL / ~ Fax # 847/ Website: PEACEFUL HEART While you are proclaiming peace with your lips, be careful to have it even more fully in your heart. - St. Francis of Assisi Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time October 2, 2011

2 Page Two Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time October 2, 2011 ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI: Guide to Real Christianity I have written several articles on St. Francis. What surprises and delights me is that I always find more to say! It could be because the legacy of St. Francis is a little like the story of Jesus. Remember the concluding lines of St. John s Gospel? There are still many other things that Jesus did, and yet if they were written about in detail, I doubt there would be room enough in the entire world to hold the books to record them (John 21:25). From my office I can see the Rectory garden. In the center of it is a statue of St. Francis. My garden is in late bloom with overflowing pots of impatiens, roses, sampacita, herbs and green tomatoes! I think St. Francis would be pleased. There is a charming story. St. Francis once told the brother in charge of the friary garden never to plant only vegetables. He was always to save space in the garden for flowers. St. Francis explained that, in doing so, the garden would produce our sisters, the flowers, out of love for her who is called the flower of the field and the lily of the valley (Song of Songs 2:1). Pope Benedict XVI used this story to illustrate how St. Francis taught us to see creation in harmony with its Creator and ourselves as stewards treasuring nature beyond its utility. The pope urges us: Let St. Francis then... set us on the right path. The right path St. Francis is such a good example for anyone searching for a way through this world s maze of distractions and delectations. I have read short lives of the saint and seen two colorful and evocative film biographies. I have stood beneath Giotto s radiant frescos in the upper church at Assisi and marvel at Francis influence almost eight hundred years after his death. Perhaps no author will ever capture the spirit of St. Francis, but I believe one came close. I have read portions of G. K. Chesterton s great biography and actually ordered it today. Dale Ahlquist, in The Apostle of Common Sense, summarizes Chesterton s portrait of the Poverello:...Chesterton describes St. Francis first as a soldier and a fighter. Then as a builder and reformer. Then a jester, a clown of God, a troubadour, and a poet. Then as a beggar, who embraced poverty as other men embrace wealth, a little poor man, who embraced not only all men as his brothers, but all creatures great and small. And finally, Chesterton describes Francis as a mirror of Christ, one who truly reflected the light of truth. I was inspired by Chesterton s insight and his understanding of the spiritual revolution begun by St. Francis: The adoration of Christ had been a part of the man s passionate nature for a long time past. But the imitation of Christ may be said to begin here. St. Francis knew that for Christianity to be real, Christ has to be real. Reality in preaching must go beyond words. Reality in prayer cannot be limited to our will thrust upon God when His will is already there as a priceless gift. There is ever so much more to say about St. Francis of Assisi! To begin with, why not join me in reading Chesterton s St. Francis of Assisi? I recommend Chesterton as an antidote for many of the world s ills and as a tonic to avoid common cold Catholicism. - Fr. Luczak

3 Page Three Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time October 2, 2011 Financial Results - Fiscal Year 2011 Annually, we publish the Parish s financial results for the past fiscal year. This is done to ensure oversight, transparency and good stewardship of Parish resources. The table shown below compares the results of Fiscal Year 2010 (July 2009 to June 2010) verses the results for Fiscal Year 2011 (July 2010 to June 2011). Here are some important points concerning this past year s results. Total Parish Income increased slightly year over year. Income from Sunday, Christmas and Easter Collections increased by $15,203 in FY Partially offsetting the increase in collections were decreases in income from leasing the school, a drop in Bingo income and a decrease in fund raising from Parish events Other Income decreased year over year due a decrease in bequests. Parish Operating Expenses increased year over year by $35,128. Utility costs, led by a 28% jump in electricity cost, increased by $22,595. The subsidy in support of our Parish school, St. John Brebeuf, increased by $10,568. Excluding these two items Parish Operating Expenses increased year over year by less than 1%. The monthly deficit reduction collection brought in $49,977. After including this amount, Parish funds dropped by $34,249. Over the past three years we have incurred deficits of $74,500, $24,998 and $34,249. To meet these deficits we have had to draw down reserve funds. In order to balance our Parish finances we continue to review spending and evaluate programs to control and further reduce expenditures. 5 Page Five Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time October 2, 2011 RESPECT LIFE MONTH SPIRITUAL LIFE As followers of Christ we know that He came so that all might have life and have it to the full. During the month of October we are reminded that life and love are to be shared with everyone and that we are to value, respect, protect, appreciate and advocate for all human life from conception to natural death. The following is a part of an article from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops:.Yet today, popular culture promotes a dangerous myth exalting the freedom and glamour of the rich and famous, the powerful or beautiful people, whose public lives seem superficial and whose private lives feature a succession of brief and broken relationships. All too often they end up in treatment for drug or alcohol addiction, usually after injuring others or humiliating themselves publicly. But until then, in the eyes of the world, they have it all! And don t we often feel like we want it all? And we want it now! According to this myth, money equals freedom. It makes us free to sample from the rich smorgasbord of consumer delights the latest electronics and trendy fashions. We are invited to be constantly entertained by new places and new experiences, the latest music or latest video games. For some people, acquaintances pass in and out of their lives, but they rarely have the time to know and love them deeply, to know the longings of their hearts, the goodness of their souls. When other people make demands on our freedom, we can choose to ignore or even eliminate them from our selfcentered lives. Our culture gives us permission to turn our back on an ill-timed baby, a neglected spouse or a mother in a nursing home who pleads for a visit. But money can t buy us love. And neither power nor freedom can bring us the one thing humans need to thrive: We were created to love and be loved. We cannot be satisfied by earthly things alone. By creating us in his own image, God has given us a nature that is partly spiritual an intellect, the capacity to know right from wrong, the free will to choose how to act, and the capacity to know and love him. Jesus incarnation, life, and death revealed to us that God is Love (I John 4:8). To love God and others fulfills our deepest needs, allowing us to have life to the full. Every person bears God s image and has an immortal soul. Yet many are viewed as being outside the circle of love unborn children whose parents are tempted to eliminate them, vulnerable people with illnesses and disabilities who risk being abandoned or even killed through misguided mercy, prisoners on death row, forgotten or despised long after they have repented of their wrongdoing. Although it seems a paradox, the greater the sacrifices made out of love, the greater is our joy and peace. Whether it is the brave decision of a pregnant woman to reject abortion and allow a loving family to parent her child when she cannot, or the daily sacrifices of parents in raising young children, or the hard work of caring for an elderly relative with dementia, when we step up to these challenges, God can stretch our hearts and fill them to overflowing with his love, joy and peace. With hearts so transformed, we can become living witnesses to the meaning of Jesus mission: I came that all might have life, and have it to the full! NEW ALTAR SERVERS Training for New Altar Servers will begin this Monday, October 3, at 5:30 p.m. in the Sacristy (off the Holy Family Room) Please be sure to eat dinner before you come. 7 Page Seven Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time October 2, 2011 REFLECTIONS BY PAUL JAROSLAWSKI When I found out in April that I would be attending World Youth Day with a group from Poland, I had no idea how fortunate I actually was. Being in such a beautiful city as Madrid, celebrating your religion with millions of youth from across the world was really a remarkable experience that I will never forget. Over the 18-day pilgrimage, I grew a lot in my faith and became a better person. My parents sacrificed a lot just so that I could go and I cannot thank them enough. The memorable experiences of meeting people some from countries that I had never even heard of was a pleasure. The contacts that I made will stay with me forever. People that I met from all over the world from countries like Brazil, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Iraq, etc. had much different cultures, different languages, and were much different in general, but what I realized was that our Catholic faith connected us. The celebrations during the week were great. Something that I also will never forget was after the mass on Sunday when all the youth started chanting Benedicto so loud that it could ve been heard miles away. I would encourage all the youth that if they ever have the opportunity to attend such a remarkable week they definitely should. It is truly something that you will never forget! 8 Page Eight Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time October 2, 2011 INTERESTED IN MINISTRY OF CARE? HUMAN CONCERNS Our Ministers of Care bring the Eucharist and the prayers, support and encouragement of our faith community to those who are homebound, hospitalized, living in nursing homes, or living in senior residences. They give witness to our brothers and sisters who are unable to be with us in church for the celebration of the Eucharist that the Lord, who is ever by their side, desires to come to them and that our parish misses them and cares for them. For some Ministers of Care the time commitment is an hour a week, for others, a couple hours twice a month. We also gather for our own formation and prayer a few times a year and assist at the Mass of the Anointing of the Sick twice a year. A five-week training course for new Ministers of Care will be held at Resurrection Medical Center in Chicago (three weeks) and at Advocate Lutheran Hospital in Park Ridge (two weeks) on Wednesdays, October 12, 19, 26 and November 2 and 9, 7:00-9:00 p.m. A sixth session would be arranged with you and our Ministry of Care Coordinators to review parish particulars. Those interested in Ministry of Care need to meet with the Coordinators, Deacon Paul or Dee Stanton, prior to registration for the training. Since information was just received about it, such a discussion would need to take place by next weekend. Please call 847/ to set up a time. Thank you! HUMAN CONCERNS COMMISSION The first meeting of the Human Concerns Commission will be on Monday, October 10 th, at 7 p.m. in the Holy Family Room. Human Concerns ministries St. Vincent DePaul Ministry, Ministry of Care, Prayer Shawl, Safety & Health Board, Sharing Parish, etc., are asked to have representation at this meeting. It is also open to parishioners interested in our outreach and care for those in need. Currently our thought is to meet every other month on the second Thursday (a conflict arose for this month, hence the Monday meeting). If you have questions, please call the RE Office, 847/ Thank you! A LITTLE CHANGE MAKES A BIG DIFFERENCE Baby bottles are still available in the Holy Family Room after Mass. Stop in to pick one up and then fill the bottle with your spare change each day. Every penny, nickel, dime, or quarter will go to the Women s Centers of Greater Chicago land to support their pro-life work. This agency provides counseling services, helps supply material and spiritual needs, offers ultrasounds and more to pregnant women so that they will carry and give birth to their unborn children. Please be part of this holy endeavor on behalf of life! Your donations and bottles are due back the last weekend of October. Thank you on behalf of those who will benefit from your generosity and prayers! Women s Club Guild Seven Invites you Join us on Saturday October 8 th, for an incredible Pasta Dinner! For their family, friends, and faith community it is often times the best, and sometimes even only, way we can help and support them. Yet we must remember that by law we cannot publicly let our parish community know the health status of any of our members without their permission. What that means is that we cannot put people s names in the bulletin sick list for prayer without permission. As a reminder our policy is as follows: Names for the sick list in the bulletin have to be called in by the person who is ill or by a member of their family. At the time they call in the name they will be asked whether they are the sick person him/herself, or a member of their family and if they give permission for the name to be placed on the list. They will be asked for the correct spelling of the sick person s name. If a family member, they will be required to give their name for our records. The name will be in the bulletin for one month. Then the person s name will be inscribed in the Book of Community Prayer. All people and prayer requests are remembered during the petitions at all the weekend Masses. Their names will also be given to our Ministers of Praise to pray for them daily.
