A Tribute to Forgotten Men This Sunday is not only the Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary time, it also marks the sixth annual concert in honor of parishioner, catechist, and entertainer de luxe, Buddy Charles (Gries). Buddy had a magic memory and a colossal repertoire. He was more than a lounge act. He could be as amusing as the Old Philosopher, a master of mimicry and satire, but he was more often a sensitive interpreter of songs, a sage by candlelight in a smoke filled room. I knew him all too briefly. That is why it is a wonderful gift to have Buddy Concerts. There s an old saying: Show me your company and I ll tell you what you are. Getting to know Buddy s family and friends has been a revelation. When the talent gathers each year, it is like releasing a genii from a bottle. I get to know Buddy better and why his family and friends still honor him. Much to my surprise, my name appears on the programme. I am outclassed, to be sure -- a little like the trained dog act that is still in training. Yet, I feel welcomed and honored -- an old dog trying to learn new tricks. I m sure all who attend this year s concert will be delighted and a little surprised by songs more famous than their composers. I found my choice, Harry Warren, an example of forgotten men who should be remembered. In fact, Harry Warren wrote the grand finale of Gold Diggers of It was a poignant plea for World War I veterans struggling in the Great Depression. Ironically, the song, Remember My Forgotten Man can also be a theme song for forgotten composers and, in particular, Harry Warren! Harry Warren Harry Warren? Born Salvatore Antonio Guaragna, his family were Italian immigrants. His father was a bootmaker who chose to Americanize by changing his name to Warren. Young Harry was one of eleven children growing up in Brooklyn in the early 20th century. He had a natural musical aptitude but his parents could not afford music lessons. Harry taught himself to play his father s accordion. He sang in the church choir and learned how to play drums. A high school drop-out, Harry taught himself to play piano and toured with a traveling carnival. In 1915, at 22, he began working for Vitagraph Studios. It was the beginning of his long association with Motion Pictures that spanned four decades. Warren wrote more than 800 songs. His songs were featured in more than 300 films. Were his songs popular? Forty-two of them were on the top ten list of radio s Hit Parade. Twentyone reached #1 on the list. His song, I Only Have Eyes For You has made another list. It is one of the 25 most performed songs of the 20th Century.

3 Page Three Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 13, 2014 While Harry Warren s music is often associated with the extravagant choreography of Busby Berkeley, he went on to composing music for Looney Tunes cartoons, and Judy Garland in the Harvey Girls. Later, true to his heritage, he wrote That s Amore for Dean Martin. He would be nominated for Academy Awards and eventually wrote for television. Harry Warren even wrote a Latin Mass setting. When he died in 1981, his simple epitaph was the first few notes of one of his most popular songs, You ll Never Know. Thanks to Wikipedia, I have a postscript on Harry Warren that speaks volumes about this Forgotten Man. The familiarity of Harry Warren s songs is matched by the anonymity of the man...he is the invisible man, his career a prime example of the oblivion that cloaked so many writers who cranked out good songs for bad movies. Please remember Harry Warren, and if you attend the Buddy Concert, his songs will make it easier! -Fr. Luczak Who Wrote That Song? SIXTH ANNUAL BUDDY CHARLES MEMORIAL CONCERT TODAY! TODAY at 3 p.m. in the Holy Family Room many of Chicago s top cabaret acts will perform here for the Sixth Annual Concert in honor of the late, great Buddy Charles (Gries), our parishioner and one of Chicago s top entertainers, and to benefit St. Isaac Jogues Parish! Tickets are $20 and are available at the door beginning at 2 p.m. Beverages will be sold and snacks available. Who Wrote That Song? will be an afternoon of songs by writers that every singer and musician knows and most audiences don t. Music, singing, laughter, and a great time is planned so don t miss it. Scheduled to appear are Audrey Morris, Joel Barry, Anne Burnell, Mark Burnell, Steve Heliotes, Ernie Lane, Paul Marinaro, Bob Moreen, Bob Solone, Scott Urban and special guests Pat Gries (Mrs. Buddy Charles) and Fr. Andrew Luczak. Show your appreciation for their generosity by being part of this special annual event! Invite your friends and neighbors to come enjoy the show and support our parish community all at the same time. 4 Page Four Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 13, 2014 TASTE OF ST. ISAAC JOGUES II The Taste of St. Isaac Jogues will return on Saturday, October 18 th! We ll have the Solemn Feast Day Mass at 5 p.m. followed by wonderful food and fellowship in the Parish Hall until 7:30 p.m. The evening will then continue with music by Patty and the Melts and the Parish Raffle Drawing! So far we have commitments of food representing India, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, Middle East, Nigeria, the Philippines, Poland, and the United States. But there s always room for others! If you would be interested in providing, preparing and serving two food items (100 small portions of each) from a country not yet represented, please contact the Religious Education Office, 847/ or sijre2004@yahoo.com by the end of July. There will be a meeting for all food providers with the Parish Life Commission on Thursday, September 11 th, at 7 p.m. APPRECIATION RECEPTION Next Sunday, July 20 th, Deacon Rod Ranola will assist at the Noon Mass and then we will host an Appreciation Reception in his honor in the Holy Family Room until 3 p.m. Everyone is invited to come thank Deacon Rod and wish him well in his new assignment at St. Cornelius Parish in Chicago. We would appreciate donations of sweets and pinwheels (meat, cheese, etc. rolled in tortilla bread and cut into rounds). Assistance with tray preparations that Sunday morning, and/or keeping trays filled during reception, and/or clean up afterward will be appreciated. SUMMER MISSION APPEAL Taste of Saint Isaac Jogues 2013 On July we will welcome Fr. Al Naseman of the Society of the Precious Blood, who will speak at all the Masses about the order s missionary work. A second collection will be taken up in support of that work. PRAYER SHAWLS Just a reminder that if you know someone who would benefit from the gift of a prayer shawl or lap blanket, call the RE Office, 847/ , to make arrangements to pick one up. These shawls and blankets have been hand made by members of our Prayer Shawl Ministry as they pray for whomever will receive one. The shawls/blankets are free. Embrace someone with the gifts of prayer and support of the faith community!

5 Page Five Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 13, 2014 HAVE YOU REGISTERED YOUR CHILDREN FOR RELIGIOUS EDUCATION? Registration for the RE Program for Kindergarten through Confirmation Year II (Gr. 8 and older) is currently taking place! Classes for Grades 1 Confirmation Year II are on Mondays, 6:45-8:00 p.m. and the Kindergarten RE class meets on Sundays, 10:30-11:30 a.m. Our year runs from late August to mid- May. Families are strongly encouraged to have their children come each year as no one year suffices in providing what is important for a strong faith foundation. Students preparing for sacraments must attend for the two immediate years prior to receiving each sacrament. So First Graders are to attend religious education classes beginning this Fall in order to receive First Communion in the Spring of Registration consists of filling out forms, providing copies of each child s baptismal certificate, if not baptized here at St. Isaac Jogues Parish and a partial payment. There is a tuition as well as book fees and sacrament fees (as applicable). If families have children with special needs or older children who have not received their sacraments, we would be happy to discuss options for their religious education and preparation for sacraments. Families with financial concerns are encouraged to talk with us as no child is denied religious education because of finances. All are welcome! Please complete this important task now so that we are prepared with catechists, assistants, books and other materials! Through our case for the To Teach Who Christ Is Campaign our parish will help pass on the faith, assist people of all ages to grow in their faith, and make our church and facilities more welcoming, safe, and useful. Through the Archdiocesan case the campaign will ensure scholarships, quality Catholic education in schools and religious education programs, needed improvements of buildings and more. As we move toward our goal of $825,000 we appeal to those who have not yet responded to the campaign to please pray and consider how you can help accomplish God s will for our parish! What sacrifice can you make to ensure that the love and sacrifice of Jesus Christ are proclaimed to others, to assist Catholics in the witness and living of their faith, to evangelize both those who have and have not heard the Gospel, to worship and learn in a place that is safe and inviting? Please don t think about your response in comparison to others. The TTWCI Campaign has always been about equal sacrifice, not equal gift! Every gift is important. 6 Page Six Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 13, 2014 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION With the Reformation, some early Protestants, including the Anabaptists, rejected infant baptism in favor of believer s baptism. Against Orthodox and Catholic practice, which favored baptism as soon as possible for a newborn, these movements desired that the candidate for baptism speak for him- or herself at a mature age, not through godparents as an infant. Today, it is clear that they were rejecting a very ancient practice (even as early as the second century) of baptizing children of all ages. Children came first in ancient baptismal ceremonies, and someone would speak for them. Gregory of Nazianzen wanted to delay the baptism of children to three years of age, since at that age they could retain at least some impression of the liturgy. He made an exception for the very ill, who were to be baptized ahead of the annual Easter baptism. That means that infants and children were normally baptized together with adults, and that everyone received confirmation and the Eucharist. The tone of the early bishops writings is generous and compassionate, and seeks to build up the eucharistic assembly by widely celebrating the gift of the Holy Spirit. If a priest celebrated baptism, then the gift of the Spirit was postponed for the bishop, but with no regard for the person s age. So, until the fifth century, confirmation was for infants, too. Rev. GIVING OF ONESELF Scientists have recently begun to discuss the idea that the primary force behind all life in the universe is self-gift. This is how everything from galaxies to human babies are born and sustained. If we read the opening of today s passage from Isaiah correctly, we see that he anticipated twentieth-century scientists by over twenty five hundred years. Using the self-giving example of the rain and snow clouds that water the earth that then yields fruit, which in turn is given over to nourish creatures, Isaiah leads us to understand that the primary force behind all life is the word of God. The ultimate giving of that word, we believe, was Jesus Christ, who, in the greatest revelation of divine love, gave of himself on the cross. To what degree are we in touch with that self-giving God in whose image we are made? To what extent do we really follow the self-giving example of Christ into whose death and resurrection we were baptized, whose ultimate self gift we celebrate every week in the Eucharist? With God s help, our lives can be like Isaiah s rain and snow, and we will not return to heaven until we have done our part to make the earth fruitful. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.
