2 Page Two The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ June 6, 2010 Corpus Christi Valencia Corpus Christi Austria CORPUS CHRISTI The Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ The Feast of Corpus Christi goes back to the thirteenth century. In 1246 the Bishop of Liége, Belgium, instituted it for his diocese at the urgent request of St. Juliana, prioress of a convent on Mount Cornillion, near the gates of city. A few years later Urban IV, a former archdeacon of Liége, extended its observance to the whole Church. This feast, by reason of the procession of the Blessed Sacrament, became very popular with the faithful, who are thereby enabled to proclaim not only their faith in the Real Presence but also their gratitude to God for all the benefits which they derive from this great Sacrament. The Sacrament of the Eucharist is so closely connected with the life of the Church and of the faithful, that it is from it alone that this life draws its sustenance and in it finds continual expression. Through the Mass, Christ's sacrifice on Calvary, the ever-flowing spring of our Redemption, is made present by the Church on the altar and is continually offered to God in union with Christ Himself. Through Communion is effected the still closer union of each one of the faithful with Christ sacrificed for them, together with the transformation of their lives by means of His; born to the life of grace in the waters of Baptism, Christians feed on the Eucharist as on heavenly bread. Both Office and Mass for this feast were composed by St. Thomas Aquinas. In them are to be found an expression of the very soul of the saint together with the doctrinal accuracy of the great theologian.

3 Page Three The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ June 6, 2010 From the Pastor "HONOR THE BEST WITH THE BEST" I once attended a dinner in honor of one of the world's great chefs, Paul Bocuse. In the ambience of the Ritz-Carlton, one could use the adjective "gala" and be accurate. The dinner had a very novel twist. Each course was to be a tribute to the master chef from one of his former "students." Among those who would pay culinary homage to Bocuse were Jean Banchet and Fernand Gutierrez. The great chefs who were not cooking that night were dining. I still have an autographed Bocuse cookbook to prove that I was there! On the Feast of Corpus Christi, I share a sympathy with the French for whom the solemnity is "La Fete Dieu." That roughly translates God's Dinner Party." It conveys ever so much more than that gala degustation at the Ritz. It is more like the dinner in Babette's Feast, which is an agape - - a foreshadowing of the heavenly banquet! But that dinner at the Ritz also had a theme not far from the Liturgy: "If you want to honor the best, do it with the best!" Fr. George Rutler is very intelligent and very witty. Apart from being an EWTN celebrity, he holds several doctorates, and has written ten books. Among them is Brightest and Best, subtitled "Stories of Hymns. Fr. Rutler has a scholar s command of facts, a poet's skill with words, and a sense of humor that is as dry as a good martini. I certainly recommend Brightest and Best. It will help anyone understand hymnody better and appreciate what is really good. Despite C.S. Lewis's complaint that most hymns are "fifth - rate poetry set to fourth - rate music, Fr. Rutler offers some very notable exceptions and adds enlightening provenance as well. I chose to meditate on two hymns associated with Corpus Christi - - the Pange Lingua ("Now, My tongue, the mystery telling") and O Salutaris Hostia ("0 Saving Victim, opening wide"). Both hymns were composed by St. Thomas Aquinas as were the proper Mass and Office. Pope Urban IV ( ) knew what was best, wanted what was best, and certainly got what was best in St. Thomas Aquinas! Fr. Rutler relates how, near the end of his life, in Salerno, St. Thomas was praying before a crucifix. A sacristan, who was within earshot, heard a voice from the cross say: You have written well of me, Thomas; what reward would you have? The author of those great Eucharistic hymns replied: Nothing but yourself Lord. St. Thomas' response came from one who knew what was best, wanted what was best, and, in eternity, got what was best! I do not know Fr. George Rutler personally, but I watch his program, Christ in the City, regularly. It wouldn't hurt to tune in occasionally or to buy a copy of Brightest and Best. Until then, why not read the words composed by St. Thomas for today s Liturgy? Meditate on words you and I have sung at Benediction since we were children. 0 saving victim, opening wide The gate of heaven to man below, Our foes press on from every side, Thine aid supply, thy strength bestow. All praise and thanks to thee ascend For evermore, blest One in Three; O grant us life that shall not end, In our true native land with thee. -Fr. Luczak

Unfortunately, stigma & fear, de-institutionalization, budget & funding cuts, lack of or inadequate health insurance as well as inconsistent systems of mental health care make such dreams a challenge. At a recent public hearing in Arlington Heights, proponents of community housing for adults with MI received a negative vote from the village s Board. Local residents had objected. Likely, fear & lack of understanding had won out. Where else might they go? Can their hopes be realized? There are advocates for those affected by MI who are championing their cause. NAMI, National Alliance on Mental Illness, offers education, groups & socialization. They advise those seeking services about such programs as prescription assistance/ insurance/ funding, legislative hearings & forums. They hold community events to help increase acceptance/ understanding & dispel fears/ myths. NAMI works with legislators to pass laws that might fix the broken mental health system & further the cause of the mentally ill. Northfield s New Foundation Center provides various supports to clients & families in our local area. In Chicago, the Archdiocese s Commission on Mental Illness works for change/ understanding & helps parishes to welcome those with MI. As a multi-state interfaith organization, Pathways to Promise encourages mental health ministry/ cooperation with providers like NAMI & local Mental Health Associations, supports efforts to service returning veterans, assists clergy experiencing mental illness & promotes mental health education, awareness & advocacy. For information on any of these groups, please call me at Peace, Pat Kellen, Parish Nurse, Advocate Health Care/ St. Isaac Jogues

St. Catherine of Genoa said, "The time I have spent before the tabernacle is the best time of my life. " The saints knew where Jesus was, and they desired no more than the privilege of keeping inseparable watch with Him, both in their affections and by their bodily presence before the Blessed Sacrament. As this story is usually interpreted, Melchizedek's action of bringing out bread and wine and blessing it with praise to the Creator is a prophetic action. Seen as a prefigurement of the action of Jesus, he foretells to Abram the One who is to come, the Messiah, The psalm echoes this theme in the time of David the King, who praises and thanks God and proclaims the preexistence of the Christ who is given princely power from "the day of your birth, in holy splendor" (Psalm 110:3). God has promised this to David and his descendants forever, and God will never go back on this promise. J. S.Paluch Co.

We have tried to keep close track of these names for our Bulletin as they are made available to us. However, now we face an important privacy issue, very much like the issues faced by hospitals, health institutions, and certainly by other parishes. We cannot (by law) publicly let our parish community know the health status of any of our members without their permission. We appreciate the fact that often friends, neighbors, and acquaintances wish to do something special for a person who is ill, and ask to place their name on the list to be prayed for. While their intentions are surely good, we simply can no longer accept names in this manner. We will institute a new process regarding calling in names for the Bulletin list. Names for the sick list placed in the Bulletin have to be called in by the person who is ill, or by a member of their family. At the time they call in the name, they will be asked whether they are the sick person him/ herself, or a member of their family, and if they give permission for the name to be placed on the list. They will be asked for the correct spelling of the sick person's name. If a family member, they will be required to give their name for our records. Thank you for your patience regarding this new process. We wish to do all we can to offer our parish community the opportunity to offer prayers for those who are ill but we must also be cognizant of the fact that all members of our congregation are entitled to their privacy in this regard.
