2 Page Two Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 27, 2011 SHROVETlDE: The Other Side of Mardi Gras Now have a good day, now have a good day, I am Shrovetide, and now I go my way. " - 16th Century Song I have a clear fascination with this time of year. The pre-lenten season call it Carnival, Mardi Gras, Fasching or Maslenitsa unfolds with many layers of meaning. It is an excuse for license and excess. It is revelry unbridled. It is a childlike search for "never, never land" or the back door to paradise. Masks magnify the possibilities of "Let's pretend," and the risk of anonymous love or mischief. When I read about Mardi Gras or see film documentaries, I know I can understand what novelist Henry James meant when he said: "I am more an observer of life than a participant. But, like Henry James, whose characters were drawn in depth, I know that as an "observer" of Carnival world wide, I am most likely to see what participants often miss something spiritual that recognizes the importance of a "before and after. The motto of Carnival could easily be the Latin maxim, Carpe Diem "Seize the Day! Live in the moment! But that is not all there is to Carnival or Mardi Gras. In A Book of Feasts and Seasons, Catholic author Joanna Bogle, beautifully expresses what the "other side of Mardi Gras" is. Properly, part of the message of Carnival is that the fun can't last it all has to stop when Lent begins. A sort of sad ending is part of the authentic Carnival message: perhaps that is why the sad clown, the pathos of Harlequin, and the idea of good things coming to an end The Carnival is a Over is part of the tradition. "Shrove Tuesday" is an old English alternative to "Fat Tuesday, Marti Gras or Pączki Day. The etymology of the term has nothing to do with fried delights like pancakes or jelly doughnuts. It harkens back to the custom popular in Medieval England of going to Confession on the day before Lent. To be "shriven of one s sins is like "scraping the hull of a ship encrusted with barnacles. Anglo-Saxon words often present a picturesque or experientially nuanced meaning that modern English misses. Shrovetide combines seriously being on the threshold of Lent and playfully enjoying a "farewell to the good life." In pre-reformation England, a church bell was rung on Shrove Tuesday to call the faithful to confession. They lined up in orderly fashion and waited their turn. "Queuing up" is part of British civility that survived the Reformation. While bells are still rung on Shrove Tuesday, they announce that pancakes are being served rather than Confessions are being heard. This bell is now commonly called the "Pancake Bell." Shrove Tuesday in England is not entirely a culinary experience. Noteworthy too is the innocent fun of a "Pancake Race." It is usually an event for mothers. Wearing aprons and head scarves, the contestants run to a finish line with a frying pan, flipping pancakes three times in honor of the Holy Trinity! The prize is the thrice flipped pancake. Compared to Mardi Gras or Carnival elsewhere, Shrovetide in England is tame and innocent. But its history is indeed food for thought a glimpse of the other, prayerful, side of Mardi Gras. - Fr. For the month we are $791 short of our budget target. On a year to date basis we have fallen behind our budget target by $7,441. When compared to last year we are running $5,868 ahead of last year s Sunday collections. We wish to express our thanks to all parishioners who continue to give of their time, talent and treasure in support of the Parish. Next weekend we will distribute our annual Lent overview which lists various prayer opportunities, events, etc. during the season of Lent. Please be sure to take a copy as you leave after Mass and plan how you will observe the Lenten season of conversion and renewal. PARISH MISSION 2011 AND LENT SOUP SUPPERS The Old and The New: The Blessing of Catholic Continuity will be the Parish Mission for Lent, 2011 and it will be our honor to welcome Bishop Joseph Perry, one of the Auxiliary Bishops of the Archdiocese of Chicago for two of the evenings. The Mission will be Sunday to Wednesday, March (with morning video sessions of the previous day running March 21-24).

4 Page Four Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 27, 2011 Our Lent Soup Suppers and Presentations will run for three weeks, beginning March 24. Meal as Reconciliation, Meal as Celebration of Life, and Meal as Initiation/Mission will be the topics. Soup will be at 6:30 p.m. with the session beginning at 7 p.m. Our speakers include Fathers Dennis O Neill, Dominic Grassi,and Britto Berchmans. Please check out the brochure which will be handed out as you leave Mass next weekend and mark your calendars to give yourself time during this Lent for renewal and growth! 2011 ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL Thank you to those of you who mailed their pledge card or filled one out today during Mass in support of the Annual Catholic Appeal. Your prayer and generosity will assist the good works and ministries of the Archdiocese of Chicago to help others to seek first the kingdom of God (Matthew 6:L33). If you did not fill out an envelope today or decided to bring it home because you need some more time to consider how you can support the Annual Catholic Appeal, please know that you can fill out a pledge envelope in the Holy Family Room next weekend or you can return the envelope you brought home in the collection. In the next several weeks you will receive your first installment reminder for your pledge. Remember you can pay your pledge over five months, longer if needed. When our parish goal of $37,689 is reached in cash, 100% of the additional funds will come back to our parish to help fund our needs. JOSEPH TABLE *The St. Joseph Table will be held here at St. Isaac Jogues on Sunday, March 13 th, beginning with the Noon Mass and followed by the blessing of the table, which will be downstairs in the Parish Hall. Serving of food (which is all meatless as an expression of solidarity with the poor) for all to share will be from 1:30-4:30 p.m. There is no charge to eat, but donations will be gratefully accepted and given to our St. Vincent DePaul Ministry to assist those in need. This special event is a long-standing tradition which gives glory to God, honors St. Joseph, and assists those in need. It was begun centuries ago in Sicily as an expression of gratitude for the intercession and help of St. Joseph in a time of crisis, but people of all cultures can and do participate. We invite you to be part of the preparation of the St. Joseph Table either through a donation of food (anything meatless, especially vegetable or fish dishes, fruit) or money and/or a giving of your time that weekend (Friday Saturday Sunday). Please note: we will take only one intention for each liturgy. We suggest a $10.00 stipend for each Mass. DON'T BE ANXIOUS People have, it seems, a natural penchant for misplaced emphasis on important things, They can easily get caught up with what they're having for dinner or what they will wear. Often it is a tragedy that helps people to refocus on what is really important. What I shall wear is an irrelevant question when I am facing surgery o rchemotherapy. What's for dinner is immaterial to those living through grief or unemployment In today's Gospel, Jesus tells us not to worry. He doesn't say, "Don't eat Don't cook. Don't buy clothes." He says, "Don't worry." Jesus asks us not to relinquish our responsibilities but to let go of our anxiety. Anxiety betrays a lack of trust and Jesus reminds us that "Your heavenly Father knows" all that you need (Matthew 6:32). 9 Page Nine Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 27, 2011 Postures of the Mass FEAST OF FAITH In the Mass, we pray not only with our lips, but with our bodies as well. We stand when the ministers enter. In Western culture, standing is a sign of attention, a mark of respect: all stand when the judge enters the courtroom, for example. Standing is also an ancient posture of prayer, mentioned frequently in the Old Testament. When the readings begin, we sit down: a listening posture. Mary sat at Jesus' feet to listen to his teaching; the crowds sat on the hillside or the seashore to hear his words. Kneeling is another posture that is full of meaning. It expresses adoration and worship, but it can also express humility and contrition. We bow: a sign of honor and reverence, acknowledging the presence of God, especially when we receive the Eucharist. And there are other ritual gestures as well-striking the breast, genuflecting, and of course making the sign of the cross. Our parish policy is that names are kept on the listing for one month. All names are then inscribed in the Book of Community Prayer and we pray for the intentions of the community (including those in the Book of Community Prayer) each weekend during the Masses so the sick and hospitalized are still prayed for by the parish. Please remember that we cannot (by law) publicly let our parish community know the health status of any of our members without their permission. The process for calling in names for the bulletin list is as follows: Names for the sick list in the bulletin have to be called in by the person who is ill, or by a member of their family. At the time they call in the name they will be asked whether they are the sick person him/herself, or a member of their family, and if they give permission for the name to be placed on the list. They will be asked for the correct spelling of the sick person s name. If a family member, they will be required to give their name for our records.
