2 Page Two Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 12, 2014 COME TO THE FEST There are actually people who enjoy television commercials. Wait and see. When the Super Bowl rolls around, there will be as much speculation on the outcome of game as there will be about commercials. Which will be the most outrageous or entertaining? We have come a long way from soaps that promise to be 99 and 44/100% pure and cereals that are the breakfast of champions. If I have a particular bone to pick with Madison Avenue it is when dysfunctional families are portrayed as the norm. Unlikely offenders are two Daisy Sour Cream commercials. I m sure you have seen the one where a boy compliments someone you think his mother on the best meal of the week. The maternal figure reminds the boy: You don t live here... Doesn t your family miss you? He responds, No we text! And everybody at the table accepts that as normal! The other Daisy commercial is set at a neighbor s house. A couple glance at the neighbor s family photo and see their own son, in his contrasting rugby shirt, lined up and smiling. They ask Why is our son in their picture? You have probably guessed that it is because they give him double portions of Daisy Sour Cream! So much for family identity, loyalty, and Honoring Thy Father and Mother. The Daisy commercial may not be worshipping the Golden Calf, but it is serving more than sour cream... You might call it pure bull. As we prepare to celebrate our Parish Fest, a Taste of St. Isaac Jogues, let us count our blessings. Let us value our history, our diverse identity and the Christ-center of our lives. I am looking forward to the excellent food, music and fellowship. Sharing expresses spirit of the Parish Fest - Many cultures, one Faith. In other parishes where I have served, we also had celebrations like Parish Fest. What these celebrations have in common is faith, respect for differences, and the goal of harmony. I am proud of all who are working to make this year s Fest a great experience of Family. Please support the Raffle and remember our To Teach Who Christ Is campaign. Both are important if we are to undertake necessary repairs and effectively address the Parish deficit. Yes, as a Family of Faith, we have much to celebrate... Much for which to be grateful. But we need all our families to support the ministries and service that have made St. Isaac Jogues a vibrant parish for more than 55 years. It is a tradition that must be passed on. You who have had a part in the great work, who have been loyal to the mission of this parish, Parish Fest is a salute to you and especially to our founders. I have no idea whether Daisy Sour Cream will be served by any of our ethnic groups. In the real world, you don t pick your parish or your family because of that double portion of Daisy! -Fr. Luczak

FEAST DAY WEEKEND The Feast of St. Isaac Jogues & the North American Martyrs will be celebrated next weekend, October It all begins on Saturday, October 18, with the Solemn Feast Day Mass will be at 5 p.m. and will include Native American music by Mr. Bill Buchholtz. Following the Mass we will hold a Taste of St. Isaac Jogues down in the Parish Hall, 6:00-7:30 p.m. Music and storytelling will feature Bill Buchholtz. Food and beverage tickets will be fifty cents each and nothing will be more than four tickets! Ten groups are preparing tastes : Germany: German potato salad, sauerkraut India: Samosas, Chicken Biriyani Ireland: ½ Corn Beef Sandwich, Shepherd s Pie Italy: Mostaccoli w/tomato sauce, meatball Mexico: Taco, Nachos Nigeria: Goat Meat w/jollof rice, fried plantain Palestine: Tabouleh, Babaganoush The Philippines: Chicken Adobo, Pancit Poland: Red Beet Borscht, Pierogi The United States: Chili, Cornbread Then the fun moves to the Holy Family Room where we happily welcome back Patty and the Melts (Lisa Hall & family), who will play, sing, and encourage us to dance until 10 p.m. As if this were not enough excitement we will also draw the winning tickets for the PARISH 50/50 RAFFLE (are you in it to win it?). On Sunday, October 19 (our actual feast day), we will have hospitality after all the Masses in the Holy Family Room. Come in for some refreshments and conversation. It is also Registration Sunday so if you want to make St. Isaac Jogues your spiritual home we invite you to fill out a registration card and become a new parishioner we welcome you among us! It is also our day to pray across from the abortion clinic on Elston and some of our teens will be participating in the CROP Walk to end hunger. Bring your families and friends! Invite former parishioners to join us for some or all of the feast day weekend activities. It s a chance to acknowledge once again that we are who we are as a parish community because of those who were here before us and those who are here now! Wear traditional or native dress or the colors of your heritage! Come and together let us give thanks for all God has accomplished through our parish and let us pray for the grace, strength and joy to proclaim and live the Gospel!

4 Page Four Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 12, 2014 St. Isaac Jogues, our Patron Saint ISAAC JOGUES was born at Orleans, France, of well-to-do parents, he studied at the Jesuit school there and joined the Jesuits in After his ordination in 1636, he requested and was sent to Quebec. He worked with great success among the Huron Indians until 1642, when a war party of Iroquois Indians, the traditional enemies of the Hurons, captured a group of Jesuits, among them Isaac and Rene Goupil, who was murdered. After a year of terrible torture and mutilation, Isaac escaped with the aid of the Dutch at Albany to New York and returned to France. At his request he was sent back to Quebec in Two years later, he and Jean de Lalande set out for Iroquois country after a peace treaty with the Iroquois had been signed. They were captured by a Mohawk Indian war party and he was tomahawked and beheaded at Ossemenon, near Albany, New York, on October 18, Jean de Lalande suffered martyrdom the next day. They were canonized with a group of other Jesuits in 1930 by Pope Pius XI as the Martyrs of North America. FRIDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIES presents Son of God on October 24 th, 6:30 p.m., in the Parish Hall. Doors will open at 6 p.m. This is the new 2014 film on the life of Christ. It s made up of episodes of the mini-series, The Bible. Come and enjoy this really wonderful film as told from his humble birth through his crucifixion and ultimate resurrection. Because of the film s over two hour running time we will begin at 6:30 p.m. This movie will not only deepen the faith of Christians but will also help others understand the Christian faith. The power of the message of God s love is conveyed with clarity and creativity. Remember the movie and refreshments are free, so come and bring family and friends. Prayer for St. Isaac Jogues O Lord God Whose voice we hear in the winds And whose breath gives life to all the world, Hear us, your people, gathered together under the care of St. Isaac Jogues. We need your strength and your wisdom. Help us walk in beauty and make our eyes ever behold your beauty surrounding us. Let our hands respect the things you have made and make us wise so that we may understand the things you have taught your people. Help us learn the lessons you have hidden in all creation, and make us always ready to come to you with open arms and glad hearts. So that together in the company of brother Isaac our spirits may return to you without shame to live forever and ever in peace.
