2 Page Two Second Sunday in Ordinary Time January 16, 2011 From the Pastor For years, Friday night has been Bingo Night at St. Isaac Jogues. Through the dedicated work of volunteers, Bingo Night has provided entertainment and outreach to both parishioners and our greater community. Through their hard work, Bingo has become a significant source of financial support for our parish. In just the last five years our Bingo volunteers have raised, on average, over $30,000 per year! That is quite an accomplishment. I would call it a real blessing. But, unfortunately, there is a problem a critical problem. Our Parish Business Manager, Bob Kerls, who oversees Bingo and the whole parish financial situation, tells me that there is an immediate need for additional volunteers if Bingo is to continue at St. Isaac Jogues Parish. Twenty positions need to be filled! Bob was kind enough to give me a clear job description for needed volunteers: Coordinator Team Leaders Floor Workers Caller Cashier Kitchen This person is responsible for the coordination of the Bingo Operation. This includes scheduling of teams, recruiting volunteers, and overseeing of operations. This role can be shared by a couple or two individuals. We have four teams which share work. We are short leaders for three of these teams. The Team Leader oversees the operation of each week's bingo game. They ensure that legal rules and regulations are observed, supervise the setup and selling of bingo cards, monitor the work of floor workers and oversee the clean-up of the parish hall. Each team should have three floor workers. We are short eight of the twelve persons required. Floor workers sell bingo cards, verify winning numbers, payout prizes and assist in closing and clean-up of the Parish Hall. The position of caller is essential for each session. We are currently short two callers. In addition to calling the numbers for each game, the caller assists in the sale of cards before the session, announces the "Rules of Play" and verifies winning numbers. Each team should have a cashier. At the present time we are short one full time and one back up cashier. The Cashier prepares cash banks for card sellers, records the number of winners and the payout for each game, prepares and signs the summary of the night's results and prepares bank deposits. Each week we sell simple comfort food grilled cheese, tuna salad, sloppy joes, popcorn, and chips. We need at least two workers each week for this operation. At the present time we are short four volunteers. If we are not able to fill these positions we will have to suspend Bingo operations in weeks to come! PLEASE HELP! By investing only 4 to 5 hours a month you can help to insure the survival and continuing success of a most important parish fundraiser. This leaves us $4,654 short of our budget target for the year. Please help us close this gap by giving just a dollar more each week. JANUARY 22 ND : DAY OF PENANCE On Saturday, January 22 nd, we will sadly observe the Supreme Court decision in the Roe v. Wade case, which legalized abortion in our country. The Bishops ask the faithful to observe this as a Day of Penance for violations to the unborn. All are encouraged to keep this day with prayers for the protection of the unborn and changes in our laws, along with penitential actions as each is able. LITURGICAL MINISTERS GATHERING Thursday, January 27 th, 7:00 p.m. in the Holy Family Room. The Roman Missal: Promises and Challenges will be facilitated by the Liturgy Board. On April 30, 2010, Rome issued the Recognitio or approval of the English translation of the 3 rd Edition of the Roman Missal. On November 27, 2011, this new translation will become the norm for our public worship and prayers. We strongly encourage you to come for this event as we begin our parish preparation for its implementation. Hospitality will follow. Please make every effort to come! 4 Page Four Second Sunday in Ordinary Time January 16, 2011 EVANGELIZATION GOD CONNECTS WITH US THROUGH WORD & SACRAMENT Across human history God has reached out to connect with us whom he has created in his very own likeness and image. This outreach culminated in sending his son, Jesus Christ, the word made flesh. God s communication directed to us seeks to draw us into connection and communion with God s very own life. God has entrusted his word to the Church. This word finds privileged expression in the Sacred Scriptures, the Bible. The word of God, however, is not bound to a book. The Church holds, treasures, and proclaims God s word. And in the sacraments, the Church celebrates Jesus, the word made flesh, and the mysteries of his life, death, and resurrection of which are made real and present to us through the sacraments. When we gather together as God s church on Sunday to celebrate the Eucharist, we hear the word of God proclaimed and preached. God truly speaks to us and connects with us. Even more, as we celebrate the Eucharist, the death and the resurrection of the Lord becomes available to us in sacramental signs. We are able to join, to connect with the Lord whose death destroyed our death and whose resurrection restored our life. God continues to reach out to embrace humanity and to connect with us and to establish a communion of life with us. In the word we hear in the Church and in the sacraments we celebrate, God touches us. In the gospel today we hear the words of John the Baptist describe the experience of baptizing Jesus. He proclaims to all who will listen that Jesus is the Son of God. If you have felt God s presence in your life, tell someone of your experience and proclaim the Good News to anyone who will listen. 5 Page Five Second Sunday in Ordinary Time January 16, 2011 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION RE NEWS The RE Catechists, Assistants and Students invite family members and interested parishioners to an Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and Benediction Service on Monday, January 17 th, at 7:15 p.m. in Church. Mr. Lenart s Confirmation Year II class will be leading the prayer. Permission slips for the Confirmation Year I Retreat on February 5 th, are due in the RE Office by Monday, Jan. 31 st. All students are expected to attend. If you did not receive the permission slip, which was mailed earlier in the week, please contact the RE Office as soon as possible, 847/ ADULT CONFIRMATION In the late Winter and early Spring, classes will be offered at parishes in our local area to help adults to prepare for the Sacrament of Confirmation, which will be celebrated at Holy Name Cathedral on May 31, If you are an active Catholic, age 18 and older, who has celebrated the sacraments of Baptism and Eucharist, you are invited to participate in the program. HUMAN CONCERNS Ministers of Care Needed The Ministry of Care needs additional members so it can continue bringing Eucharist to those who, due to age or illness, are unable to attend Mass. We particularly need Ministers to take Communion to the Catholic residents of GlenBridge Nursing & Rehab Centre. Currently, the Ministers visit first & third Mondays after morning Mass. Training for the Ministry is required. For details, contact Pat Kellen at Prayer Shawl Ministry News Those with knitting or crocheting skills are invited to join our monthly gathering Thurs. Jan. 20 from 10-11:30AM in Room 6. Bring your size 11 or 13 (long) needles or M, N, or P hook. We ll provide yarn & instructions. Our Prayer Shawl ladies have been busy. We have a number of wraps available for anyone who is ill or grieving & in need of the physical & spiritual support a shawl can provide. To arrange to get one, contact Pat Kellen at Alzheimer s/ Dementia Caregivers Support Group The next monthly evening support group gathering is set for Thurs., Jan 20 at 7PM in Room 6. Anyone caring for a person with Alzheimer s or a related dementia is welcome to attend. 6 Page Six Second Sunday in Ordinary Time January 16, 2011 PARISH LIFE TODAY IN THE HOLY FAMILY ROOM.PARISH FAREWELL TO PAT KELLEN After all Masses TODAY, in the Holy Family Room, we have the opportunity to thank and wish well our Parish Nurse of 17 years, Pat Kellen. Refreshments will be served. We will also be collecting baby items for the Women s Center in support of their pro-life efforts. ST. JOSEPH TABLE Our parish's St. Joseph Table will be held on Sunday, March 13th, beginning with Mass at Noon, followed by the blessing of the table and serving of food 1:30-4:30 p.m. While this tradition, begun as an expression of gratitude for the intercession and help of St. Joseph, has its origin in Sicily, it has enjoyed popularity among many peoples. There is no charge for sharing in the table and donations received will go to our parish's work of helping the poor and needy. Be sure to check the bulletin in the coming weeks to see how you can help with this year's St. Joseph Table with your prayers, your time (set-up, serving, clean-up), and/or your food/monetary donations (to prepare the table for all the people who will come). ISAAC JOGUES WOMEN S CLUB is inviting all the men and women of the parish along with their friends to come to the 5th Annual Card and Bunco Party in the Holy Family Room on Tuesday, February 8th at 7:00 p.m. You can play Bunco, Poker, Bridge, Pinochle - whatever game you and your friends enjoy. Each table of 4 to 6 will receive a table prize of $10.00 Pop Corn & Pop will be available Refreshments will be served after the games. The January Quarterly Meeting of the St. Isaac Jogues Women s Club will take place on: Tuesday, January 18, :30 p.m. Mass followed by a Pot Luck Supper in the Holy Family Room There will be a guest speaker, Sue Walsh, R.N. who goes with a team of medical personnel to assist the victims of the Haiti earthquake. She was there the first week of January and will update us on the current status. All are welcome! FIRST EVER WINE TASTING!!! An exciting new event is coming on Saturday, Feb. 26 at 7:00pm. Wine Tasting, Silent Auction & Raffle will take place. You must be at least 21 to attend. Details to follow.

The School Open House, beginning at 10:00 AM until 12:00 PM, will follow the 9:00 A.M. Family Mass at the Church. The school is located at 8301 N. Harlem Ave. in Niles. We have tried to keep close track of these names for our Bulletin as they are made available to us. However, now we face an important privacy issue, very much like the issues faced by hospitals, health institutions, and certainly by other parishes. We cannot (by law) publicly let our parish community know the health status of any of our members without their permission. We appreciate the fact that often friends, neighbors, and acquaintances wish to do something special for a person who is ill, and ask to place their name on the list to be prayed for. While their intentions are surely good, we simply can no longer accept names in this manner. We will institute a new process regarding calling in names for the Bulletin list. Names for the sick list placed in the Bulletin have to be called in by the person who is ill, or by a member of their family. At the time they call in the name, they will be asked whether they are the sick person him/ herself, or a member of their family, and if they give permission for the name to be placed on the list. They will be asked for the correct spelling of the sick person's name. If a family member, they will be required to give their name for our records. Thank you for your patience regarding this new process. We wish to do all we can to offer our parish community the opportunity to offer prayers for those who are ill but we must also be cognizant of the fact that all members of our congregation are entitled to their privacy in this regard.
