2 Page Two Fourth Sunday of Lent March 22, 2009 LENT GALLERY PRETTY AS A PICTURE Ecce Ancilla Domini The Late Tallulah Bankhead was known for her devastating one-liners. After seeing a play overloaded with arcane symbolism and stilted dialogue, she gave her verdict: Really, darling, there's less to this than meets the eye!" Despite first impressions, I could borrow Tallulah's line to deliver a definitive post mortem on Dante Gabriel Rossetti's Ecce Ancilla Domini. At first glance, I said to myself: How pretty!" Rossetti's visualization of the Annunciation is pretty and appropriately pastel. It reminds me of a film sequence shot through gauze. There is something ethereal in its soft focus that could easily be mistaken for real spirituality. There is something in its unconventional composition that could pass for mystical insight. It is much more a matter of poetic license. The more one looks, the more disturbing Rossetti's Annunciation becomes! As a Pre-Raphaelite painter, Rossetti does not surprise us with his self-conscious attempt to suggest the fourteenth century and the colors of Fra Angelico. The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood scorned what they considered the frivolous art of the day. They saw in it an insincere imitation of Renaissance and Baroque masters like Raphael, Michelangelo and Titian. What does surprise us, and greatly disturbed G.K. Chesterton, was that for all their effort to capture a mood of religion through subject matter and antique style, the Pre- Raphaelites lacked an authentic religious philosophy. Chesterton observes: These painters may have gained their technical inspiration from pre-raphaelite painters, but they gained their intellectual inspiration from a batch of German pessimistic philosophers and French pessimistic poets. Holman Hunt was sincere and pious. John Everett Millais was witty and an excellent technician. Dante Gabriel Rossetti was handsome, self-indulgent and poetically brilliant. But there was a bohemian prodigality about him. Was he a Christian? Was he an atheist? When he painted Ecce Ancilla Domini in 1850, he had not begun his descent into drugs and depression. He had just met Lizzy Siddal, the beautiful model who would

3 Page Three Fourth Sunday of Lent March 22, 2009 become his wife. Even so, look again at Rossetti's, Annunciation. Is there anything joyful about it? The model for the Virgin Mary was his sister, Christina, who had a nervous breakdown when she was fourteen. No wonder she looks, as one commentator put it, like an emaciated and repressed teenage girl. Christina was twenty when she modeled for the painting. She still looks fragile and vulnerable. She portrays Mary as one recovering from a drug overdose. She is dazed and "put off" by the androgynous heavenly messenger offering her a lily. She is nor even aware of the "dove." But it is Chesterton who always says it best. The artist has chosen the most sumptuous and joyful of all human occasions, the salutation of the mother in the name of her heroic offspring. And he has painted on the face all the unutterable sadness of a premonition of futility. This is a decadent Madonna who distrusts her own joys even before they come. It is a beautiful and wonderful picture, and is wholly right that it should be admired and celebrated as a picture. But if any man who possesses it will go to church in the evening and hear the thunder of that ancient chant which the Church has, with so sublime and human an instinct, set among her rites, the song of the triumphant Mother, he must not be surprised when he gets home if he finds himself smashing the picture with a stick. Is Chesterton pitiless or simply correct? Can one imagine the cowering, pathetic creature in Rossetti s painting proclaiming the Magnificat? It is a pretty picture, but compare it to Fra Angelico s "Annunciation." When it was first unveiled, Ecee Ancilla Domini "was so universally disliked that Rossetti refused to exhibit in London again. Yes, "there is less to this than meets the eye!" If we look for more, it may be like discovering the Gospel according to Dorian Gray! - Fr. Luczak. Fra Angelico

SPIRITUAL LIFE PARISH MISSION 2009: The Great Invitation This is the week and today is the beginning! Parish Mission 2009, The Great Invitation, is being led by Fr. Jordan Kelly, OP., Director of the Archdiocesan Office for Evangelization. Father Kelly will preach at all the Masses today and then begin the Mission sessions this afternoon. Jordan Kelly, OP, to St. Isaac Jogues Parish. Fr. Kelly was born in Allentown, PA and is a Dominican Friar of the Province of St. Albert the Great. He has served as the Dean of Students, Director of Faith Formation and Student Activities at Fenwick High School in Oak Park. In addition to having been a teacher for many years, Fr. Kelly is also a liturgist and pastoral musician, having served as the Director of Worship for the Diocese of Wilmington and the Archdiocese of Baltimore. While stationed in St. Louis, Fr. Jordan was the Organist of the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis and the Associate Director of Music for the Archdiocese of St. Louis. He lectures on the Liturgy, Spiritual Theology, and is a frequent retreat master. Father has earned the Pontifical Degree in Sacred Theology, the Master of Divinity and the Master of Arts in Sacred Music. SPECIAL COLLECTIONS There will be a second collection next weekend for your donations for Operation Rice Bowl. On Holy

6 Page Six Fourth Sunday of Lent March 22, 2009 Thursday, at the Mass of the Lord s Supper, there will be one collection only and that will be for our Sharing Parish, Maternity BVM, for an Emergency Assistance Fund so that they may help people who come to their door for food and other needs. Your envelopes for the Holy Land collection are to be placed in the alms boxes at the doors of the Church on Good Friday (no collection will be taken up during the service.) Your generous support will be deeply appreciated for these various collections. Thank you! PARISH RECONCILIATION SERVICE The Parish Lent Reconciliation Service will be this Saturday, March 28, 11:00 a.m. in church. It will be a communal service of prayers, Scripture readings and examination of conscience and be followed by individual confession and absolution. Come ready yourself for Holy Week and accept the Lord s mercy, healing, and forgiveness. OPERATION RICE BOWL Last year $253, was collected in the Archdiocese of Chicago for Operation Rice Bowl. As has been written before 75% of it went to fund Catholic Relief Services overseas projects and 25% stayed in the Archdiocese to fund 38 hunger projects in Chicago (parish and community food pantries, soup kitchens, etc.) Our Lenten disciplines of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving are an act of solidarity with our brothers and sisters in need. Catholic Relief Services is committed to the belief that solidarity will transform the world. We encourage you to continue using your Rice Bowl calendar to pray and learn more about CRS projects and especially about the people they assist million people live below the poverty line in the United States; 21% of the population in Honduras is undernourished and 50.7% lives in poverty; 20% of the people in Egypt live below poverty; in Tanzania 89.9% live on less than $2 per day and 57% live on less than $1 per day; 36.8% of the population in the Philippines live below poverty and in Ghana 78.5% live on less than $2 per day. These are difficult economic times for many, but every bit of help, small or large, will greatly impact the lives of people in the countries named above. Please bring your donation and place it in the second collection next weekend, March You may also bring your alms/donations Palm Sunday weekend, April 4-5, and put them in the alms boxes at the doors of the Church. THE SEVEN LAST WORDS OF JESUS All are invited to a service of Scripture, witness, reflection, and music as we pray the Seven Last Words of Jesus, as found in the Gospels, before He died on the cross. The Seven Last Words of Jesus Service will be next Sunday, March 29 th, at 3:00 p.m. in the Church. Our Adult Choir, under the direction of our Music Director, Lisa Hall, will assist our prayer as will seven members of the parish who will offer their witness on what these words of Jesus mean to them in their lives. Please extend an invitation to your family members and friends to come for this special afternoon of devotion. 7 Page Seven Fourth Sunday of Lent March 22, 2009 READINGS FOR THE FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT Jeremiah 31:31-34 Psalm 51:3-4, Hebrews 5:7-9 John 12:20-33 ABOUT NEXT WEEK S READINGS JEREMIAH: The prophet Jeremiah ministered at a difficult time in Jewish history. Jerusalem, their beloved capital city, had been destroyed, and most of the people taken captive to far-off Babylon. In this gloomy setting, Jeremiah expresses the conviction that the Lord will raise up a new leader from the line of David to restore and rebuild their native land. HEBREWS: The Letter to the Hebrews was written to a Christian community that had become dispirited and whose faith was faltering. Jesus is presented in today s passage as a model of suffering and a source of strength in time of need. (This passage is also part of the second reading on Good Friday.) **************************************************** EDUCATION RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS *Students in Grs. 5-8 will attend the Parish Mission presentation with Fr. Kelly during class on Monday night. Grs. 1-4 will attend a mission presentation with Mrs. Stanton during class in the Holy Family Room. We encourage all RE family members to come and share the Mission experience with their children. *Confirmation Sponsor response forms are due by March 30, as is any work not yet turned in by Confirmation Year II Candidates (service log, service summary, saint paper, journals, etc.) BIBLE STUDY Bible Study will not meet on Wednesday, March 25 th. We will meet again April 1 st. STORIES AROUND THE TABLE Our Soup Supper and Presentation series resumes this Thursday, March 26 th. A simple meal will be served at 6:30 p.m. in the Holy Family Room followed by the presentation at 7 p.m. Father Robert Miller, Mr. Donnie Brown, and Ms. Carol Larry of Genesis Housing Development Corporation, a faith-based group building housing on Chicago s south side, will talk about housing issues. Free will offerings appreciated. RSVP to RE Office, 847/ , by Tuesday, Mar. 24, if possible, for meal planning purposes. All, however, are welcome even if you don t have a chance to call in! The last Soup Supper and Presentation night will be April 2. HUMAN CONCERNS Ministry of Care Training Begins in April A 5-part Archdiocesan Ministry of Care training, sponsored by Resurrection & Lutheran General, starts April 15, Classes meet Wednesdays from 7:00 to 9:00PM. The course is designed to prepare new ministers for their work of serving the sick & aging & bringing them Communion. Sessions will be held at St. Paul of the Cross Church, 320 S. Washington, Park Ridge. A 6 th meeting, for those interested in participating in Lutheran General s ministry to Catholic patients, will be held on their campus May 20. Attendance at all sessions is required. To receive the recommendation for inclusion in the course, a screening interview must be completed. St. Isaac Jogues Ministers of Care completed a similar training & received a mandate from the Archdiocese to serve in this work. The Ministry brings them to area hospitals, particularly Lutheran General, senior living & health care facilities Belmont Village, GlenBridge Nursing & Rehab Centre, Niles Nursing & Rehab Centre & the Park at Golf Mill, as well as to individual parishioner homes. Visits to hospitalized parishioners are variable & depend upon SIJ being notified of their presence. Visits to GlenBridge & Niles are made 1 st & 3 rd Mondays after morning Mass. Communion is brought to the Catholic residents of The Park the 3 rd Thursday of the month at 1:30PM & those of Belmont Village 2 nd & 4 th Thursdays at 6:30PM. Home Communion calls are made at the convenience of the parishioner & Minister of Care. Some are done weekdays during the day. Some are made evenings. Others are completed weekend mornings or early afternoons. Most Ministers of Care carry out their assignments twice a month. Currently, our Ministry most needs additional members for our nursing home work. According to the Code of Canon Law 948: Separate Masses must be applied for the intentions of those for whom an individual offering, even if small, has been made and accepted. What is normative in the practice of the Church is that there be separate individual Masses offered for individual intentions. Therefore, the practice of combining individual intentions on a regular basis has ceased at St. Isaac Jogues.

Teschky Supervisor In the month of February, the Saint John Brebeuf fourth graders researched the Presidents of the United States. Each student created a poster for their president and prepared an oral presentation for the class. They creatively shared all the information they had learned. Some students even dressed like their president, or thought of unique ways to highlight their president's life. The students were able to teach us all something new and a great learning experience was had by all. Upcoming events include an Easter Egg Hunt. The Easter Egg Hunt will be an exciting day for the K-4 grades as they search for eggs filled with candy and homework passes! As always Student Council is doing a great job with our T recycling program. Members faithfully recycle each week in an effort to go green!

We have tried to keep close track of these names for our Bulletin as they are made available to us. However, now we face an important privacy issue, very much like the issues faced by hospitals, health institutions, and certainly by other parishes. We cannot (by law) publicly let our parish community know the health status of any of our members without their permission. We appreciate the fact that often friends, neighbors, and acquaintances wish to do something special for a person who is ill, and ask to place their name on the list to be prayed for. While their intentions are surely good, we simply can no longer accept names in this manner. We will institute a new process regarding calling in names for the Bulletin list. Names for the sick list placed in the Bulletin have to be called in by the person who is ill, or by a member of their family. At the time they call in the name, they will be asked whether they are the sick person him/ herself, or a member of their family, and if they give permission for the name to be placed on the list. They will be asked for the correct spelling of the sick person's name. If a family member, they will be required to give their name for our records. Thank you for your patience regarding this new process. We wish to do all we can to offer our parish community the opportunity to offer prayers for those who are ill but we must also be cognizant of the fact that all members of our congregation are entitled to their privacy in this regard.
