2 Page Two Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 16, 2011 ROSES AMONG THE THORNS The Blood of the Martyrs is the seed of the Church. -Tertullian Martyrs follow the example of Christ quite literally. Their lives, no matter how they differ in detail, reflect one major theme - SACRIFICE. Willing to endure every kind of hardship, martyrs are motivated by faith and an identification with Christ and his Mission. An essential part of that Mission is the readiness to lay down one s life. St. Paul, in the fifth chapter of his Epistle to the Romans, describes the extent of Christ s love and what motivates a Christian martyr. At the appointed time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for us godless men. It is rare that anyone should lay down his life for a just man, though it is barely possible that for a good man someone may have the courage to die. It is precisely in this that God proves His love for us: that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. The word martyr, in its essential Greek etymology, means WITNESS. Martyrs make public not only their beliefs, but their personal commitment and dedication to the person of Jesus Christ. That commitment unto death is the unique gift of martyrs, both ancient and modern. Tertullian s eloquent tribute - The Blood of the Martyrs is the seed of the Church - further links Christ s Holy Sacrifice with the sacrifices of the martyrs. Martyrdom becomes not the tragedy of unjust executions, but a source of inspiration and courage for those who are faithful. Martyrdom becomes a powerful force in the actual propagation of the faith. Martyrs who were missionaries seem to make Tertullian s insight historically persuasive. St. Boniface, an English monk, was martyred in pagan Germany. His witness was the seed of the Church in Germany. St. Adalbert was a Bohemian bishop. His martyrdom by pagan west Prussians became the seed of the Church in Poland. The North American Martyrs - - especially Isaac Jogues and John de Brebeuf - - sacrificed all for the Native American tribes. How much they gave up is evident from the diaries that remain. The combination of ardent faith and the rigors and rejection in an alien land and culture - makes their story very human. Negative feelings, perhaps even anger, are set forth in the diary of St. John de Brebeuf, but so too is resolve - - a single minded dedication to Christ and the Will of God. As we honor our patron, St. Isaac Jogues, the reflections of his fellow missionary, can reveal what gave these all too human French missionaries a superhuman strength to endure and triumph for the love of God and those they served. We must have a sincere affection for the natives, looking upon them as ransomed by the Blood of the Son of God and as our brothers with whom we are to spend the rest of our lives Jesus Christ is our true greatness; It is He alone and his crosses that should be sought in ministering to these people. If we seek for anything else, we will find nothing but bodily and spiritual afflictions. But if we have found Jesus Christ in his cross, we have found roses among the thorns, sweetness in bitterness, all in nothing. - Fr. Luczak

We need your strength and your wisdom. Help us walk in beauty and make our eyes ever behold your beauty surrounding us. Let our hands respect the things you have made and make us wise so that we may understand the things you have taught your people. St. Isaac Jogues, our Patron Saint ISAAC JOGUES was born at Orleans, France, of well-to-do parents, he studied at the Jesuit school there and joined the Jesuits in After his ordination in 1636, he requested and was sent to Quebec. He worked with great success among the Huron Indians until 1642, when a war party of Iroquois Indians, the traditional enemies of the Hurons, captured a group of Jesuits, among them Isaac and Rene Goupil, who was murdered. After a year of terrible torture and mutilation, Isaac escaped with the aid of the Dutch at Albany to New York and returned to France. At his request he was sent back to Quebec in Two years later, he and Jean de Lalande set out for Iroquois country after a peace treaty with the Iroquois had been signed. They were captured by a Mohawk Indian war party and he was tomahawked and beheaded at Ossemenon, near Albany, New York, on October 18, Jean de Lalande suffered martyrdom the next day. They were canonized with a group of other Jesuits in 1930 by Pope Pius XI as the Martyrs of North America. Help us learn the lessons you have hidden in all creation, and make us always ready to come to you with open arms and glad hearts. So that together in the company of brother Isaac our spirits may return to you without shame to live forever and ever in peace. Amen. ISAAC JOGUES SPIRITUAL LIFE The Feast of St. Isaac Jogues, St. John Brebeuf and the North American Martyrs is this Wednesday, October 19 th. In addition to the 8 a.m. Mass there will be a special feast day Mass at 7 p.m. that night in church. All are invited to come and are encouraged to invite former parishioners to come home to celebrate our patron and our life as a community of faith. An invitation has also been extended to the Kateri Center (formerly the Anawim Center). Native American musician Bill Buckholtz will again be with us and will assist with music at Mass as well as providing music and storytelling during the reception which follows. We would like to have petitions offered in various languages, so please sign up in the Holy Family Room TODAY if you can provide this help. Assistance is also needed with bringing food for the reception, serving and clean up. Again please sign up in the Holy Family Room or call the Religious Education Office, 847/ , by Monday night. PARISH PARTICIPATION IN RESPECT LIFE MONTH +Our Day of Prayer in support of the 40 Days For Life Campaign begins at Midnight, October 19 (Tuesday night going into Wednesday morning)! Along with members of St. John Brebeuf Parish we will keep a peaceful vigil and pray for an end to abortion in our country and for respect for the holiness of all life at the Albany Medical-Surgical Center (which performs late-term abortions), 5086 N. Elston Avenue in Chicago. Even if you did not sign up for an hour, you are welcome to come pray anytime during the early morning, daytime, evening or late night. If you cannot go to the facility, perhaps you can set aside some quiet time during that day and unite yourself in prayer with those who are there. The prayer vigil will continue through November 6 th. Know that your prayer and fasting during these remaining days are holy works and spiritual blessings to spread the Gospel of Life. This agency provides counseling services, helps supply material and spiritual needs, offers ultrasounds and more to pregnant women so that they will carry and give birth to their unborn children. Those in the society are remembered at a weekday Mass each week. Kindly place your envelope in the collection by October 30 th. WYPOMINKI ROSARY OF REMEMBRANCE AND ALL SAINTS MASS A Rosary of Remembrance will be prayed at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 1 st. The names of the dead will be mentioned between each of the mysteries of the Rosary. A Mass will then be celebrated in both Polish and English at 7:00 p.m. to mark the Solemnity of All Saints. Wypominki envelopes on which to place the names of the dead are available in the Church or in the Polish School. Please return the envelopes in the collection or to the Rectory by 1 p.m. on Sunday, October 30 th. All are cordially invited and welcome! NEW TRANSLATION OF THE ROMAN MISSAL The new translation of the Roman Missal will be used beginning the First Sunday of Advent at the end of November. A few weeks ago we explained that the response to The Lord be with you will now be And with your spirit. As we continue to examine the Introductory Rites, we come to what will now be referred to as the Penitential Act. There are three forms to the Penitential Act, which helps us cultivate a more humble, sorrowful attitude toward God. Sinning against God is no light matter. We must take responsibility for whatever wrong we have done and whatever good we have failed to do. The Penitential Act helps us express even more our heartfelt contrition. Most commonly used in general and here at St. Isaac Jogues Parish is Form C. The Deacon or Presider pray a bid which acknowledges our need, our dependence on God and His mercy and loving kindness. We respond, Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. This form will not change. Form A is the next one we use most often The Confiteor. The new translation better reflects the Latin text and will be as follows: I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do, (and striking your breast, you say --) through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; (then you continue -- ) therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God. Form B is like a dialogue: Have mercy on us, O Lord. For we have sinned against you. Show us, O Lord, your mercy. And grant us your salvation. ST. We will not make it to our annual food drive at Thanksgiving. For their family, friends, and faith community it is often times the best, and sometimes even only, way we can help and support them. Yet we must remember that by law we cannot publicly let our parish community know the health status of any of our members without their permission. What that means is that we cannot put people s names in the bulletin sick list for prayer without permission. As a reminder our policy is as follows: Names for the sick list in the bulletin have to be called in by the person who is ill or by a member of their family. At the time they call in the name they will be asked whether they are the sick person him/herself, or a member of their family and if they give permission for the name to be placed on the list. They will be asked for the correct spelling of the sick person s name. If a family member, they will be required to give their name for our records. The name will be in the bulletin for one month. Then the person s name will be inscribed in the Book of Community Prayer. All people and prayer requests are remembered during the petitions at all the weekend Masses. Their names will also be given to our Ministers of Praise to pray for them daily.
