2 Page Two Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 18, 2009 From the Pastor AUTUMN FEELINGS PART II There is something that can transform melancholy sentiments into revelations. It is not so rare as mystic vision. It may be as close as MEMORY and IMAGINATION. Artists and poets thrive on experience distilled by memory and imagination In his poem, Hiawatha, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow describes Autumn transfigured : Filled the sky with haze and vapor, Filled the air with dreamy softness, Gave a twinkle to the water, Touched the rugged hills with smoothness. Brought the tender Indian Summer To the melancholy north-land, For me, memory and imagination are gifts to light the world within and around us. Despite my expressed dislike for Autumn, it is a feeling, an honest feeling very much of the present moment. Rather than stifle the feeling I offer it as a positive challenge. WHAT DO YOU FEEL? Happier feelings about Autumn are stirred by a full color cartoon by John. T. McCutcheon that appeared in the Chicago Tribune annually from 1912 through It was called Injun Summer. The cartoon was immensely popular, and would probably have continued to be an icon of Autumn had it not been for a text that offended many because of racial overtones. The two part cartoon is timeless. It conjures up the wonder of

3 Page Three Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 18, 2009 childhood, story-telling and, above all, the power of poetic imagination. In the upper cartoon an old man sits under a tree. A young boy stands near him. They have been raking leaves and now rest as a small pile of leaves burns like a campfire in front of them. They are both looking out into a field with many stalks of corn. The old man tells the boy a story of how the spirits of Native Americans return in Autumn. As the boy looks at the same scene after dusk he sees (in the lower cartoon) not stalks of corn, but tepees. In the smoke of the smoldering leaves, he imagines Indians dancing around a campfire under the full moon. I hope that Native Americans, whom I greatly admire and from whom we can learn much, will not be offended by this reference to Injun Summer. It has enriched memories and fired imaginations. I would like to believe that, like the stories of James Fenimore Cooper, Injun Summer may have influenced many to be not only curious, but also truly concerned and sympathetic to the cause of the Native American. In any case, it is not likely to enjoy wide popularity again. At best, it can be one of many happy memories of Autumn. - Fr. Luczak ********************************************************************** THE NORTH AMERICAN MARTYRS Isaac Jogues and His Companions When he was seventeen Isaac Jogues expressed a desire to be a missionary. After his ordination he was told: You will go to the New France to die." In 1647 he was murdered near Albany, New York. John de Brebeuf expressed his desire for martyrdom in his diary: "I have experienced a great desire to be a martyr and to endure all the torments the martyrs suffered" In 1649 he was martyred near Georgian Bay, Canada. Among the other six were Rene Goupil who had entered the Jesuits but had to leave because of illness and became a surgeon; and John Lalande, who was also a layman. Rene Goupil was martyred in 1642, Lalande was martyred the day after Isaac Joguesin The remaining four were Jesuit priests: Anthony Daniel, Gabriel Lalement, Charles Garnier and Noel Chabanel who were martyred in All were subjected to cruel tortures by the Iroquois, and many of their Huron converts were mangled and killed along with them. The blood of these martyrs has "consecrated the first beginnings of the faith in North America." We pray that by their help and prayers our Church may grow stronger especially here in our North American countries. 5 Page Five Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 18, 2009 SPIRITUAL LIFE PARISH PARTICIPATION IN RESPECT LIFE MONTH Beginning at midnight tonight parishioners from St. Isaac Jogues and St. John Brebeuf parishes will keep a peaceful vigil, praying for an end to abortion in our country and respect for the holiness of all life at the Albany Medical-Surgical Center (which performs late-term abortions), 5086 N. Elston Avenue in Chicago. Even if you did not sign up for an hour, you are welcome to come to pray anytime during the early morning, day or evening. If you cannot go to the facility, perhaps you can set aside some quiet time during the day and unite yourself in prayer spiritually with those who are there. The prayer vigil will continue through November 1 st. Know that your prayer and fasting during these days is a holy work and spiritual blessing to spreading the Gospel of Life! Your spare change makes a big difference! Keep collecting your spare change to assist The Women s Center s pro-life efforts of counseling, ultrasounds, and material and spiritual support for pregnant women. The return of bottles will be appreciated by the weekend of October 31- November1. SIJ FEAST DAY WEEKEND As part of our Feast Day weekend we are happy to welcome members of the Anawim Center, a Native American Interfaith Spiritual Center in Chicago, and guest musician Bill Buckholtz. Anawim s vision is to integrate the Christian and Traditional way of prayer and life. Catholic We celebrate the Catholic sacraments. Traditional Anawim provides traditional prayer services in an All Nations Indian Prayer Circle with a feast that follows. Anawim is a place to honor our elders and ancestors, a safe place for your children, a place to be Indian with other Indians, a place to work for justice for all Indians, a place to seek health and wholeness, and a place to explore your spirituality. Bill Buchholtz began to play the Native Flute some years ago after being gifted with it by a Lakota Sioux elder who told him, It s in your blood. The music he found in the flutes strengthened his spiritual connection to his indigenous roots. Mr. Buchholtz s priority is to educate people about the history, spiritual significance, culture, and traditions of the Native Flute. He is widely known and respected in the inter-faith community in Chicago and works closely with the United Methodist Church s Native American Ministry and the Anawim Center. His music can be heard on Yo Yo Ma s Silk Roads-Crossroads Chicago CD. Mr. Buchholz s has performed at the Field Museum, the Children s Museum and for the visit of Archbishop Desmond Tutu. BLESSED KATERI TEKAKWITHA Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha, Lily of the Mohawks, was born in 1656 of a Christian Algonquin mother. Her father was a Mohawk clan Chief in the village of Ossesmenon (Auriesville, NY) along the Mohawk River. A smallpox epidemic swept through the Mohawk village and claimed the lives of Tekakwitha s parents and brother. She survived the disease, but it left her eyesight impaired and her face scarred. It also left her physically weak for the rest of her life. Orphaned at the age 4, she was adopted by her aunt and uncle. In 1680 St. Peter s Mission was established in Kahnawake (Fonda, NY). Four years later Fr. James de Lamberville became responsible for the new mission. Tekakwitha met the priest and expressed her desire to be baptized. On April 5, 1676 she was baptized and given the name Kateri. In August, 1677, Kateri was encouraged to leave her Mohawk Village and live at Sault St. Louis near Montreal. After a long and strenuous trip, and with the help of friends, she arrived at the Sault. Finally, she would be able to practice her Christian ways with greater openness and freedom. On Christmas Day, 1677, Kateri received her first Holy Communion. On March 25, 1679, Kateri pronounced her vow of perpetual virginity. She dedicated her life to teaching prayes to children and helping the sick and aged until she was stricken with an illness that was to claim her life. On April 17, 1680, she died at 3:00 p.m. at the age of twenty-four. Her last words were lesos konoronkwa, Jesus, I love you. A few minutes after her death those around her bedside witnessed the ugly facial scars suddenly disappear. In 1943 she was declared Venerable by Pope Pius XII and in 1980 Kateri was Beatified by Pope John Paul II in Rome. Prayer for the Canonization of Blessed Kateri O God, who among the many marvels of Your Grace in the New World, did cause to blossom on the banks of the Mohawk and of the St. Lawrence, the pure and tender Lily, Kateri Tekakwitha, grant we beseech You, the favor we beg through her intercession; that this young lover of Jesus and of His cross may be counted among

6 Page Six Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 18, 2009 the Saints by Holy Mother Church, and that our hearts may be enkindled with a stronger desire to imitate innocence and faith. Remember to bring a rosary. There is some room left on the bus. If there are parents who would like to attend with their children, please call the RE Office Monday, (847) Students who are not attending the field trip do have class that night, 6:45-8:00 p.m. Religious Education students in Grades. 1-5 and those in Grades. 6 - Confirmation Yr. II who are not going on the field trip are reminded to bring a rosary to class Monday for our Rosary for Life Prayer service. This service will begin in church at 7:30 p.m. Family members and parishioners are welcome to come and pray with us. To make your individual appointment, come to the Holy Family Room on Saturday. October 24 between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. or Sunday, October 25 from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. You ll get your time, a reminder card & complete your paperwork. For information, please call Pat Kellen, at (847) Human Concerns Commission During this activities year at St. Isaac, we are looking to re-form the Human Concerns Commission (HCC). The HCC will consist of parish members interested or working in one of our human concerns organizations [Ministry of Care, Parish Nurse Programs, St. Vincent de Paul Society, Hopeline, etc.]. The HCC exists to increase awareness of human concerns and social justice issues and to support the efforts of member organizations and other initiatives. During this initial season, the focus will be on educating members about Catholic social justice teaching & getting to know about current efforts. We also would like to thank all who attended the dinner. The general consensus was the food was good and everyone seemed to enjoy the company. We have tried to keep close track of these names for our Bulletin as they are made available to us. However, now we face an important privacy issue, very much like the issues faced by hospitals, health institutions, and certainly by other parishes. We cannot (by law) publicly let our parish community know the health status of any of our members without their permission. We appreciate the fact that often friends, neighbors, and acquaintances wish to do something special for a person who is ill, and ask to place their name on the list to be prayed for. While their intentions are surely good, we simply can no longer accept names in this manner. We will institute a new process regarding calling in names for the Bulletin list. Names for the sick list placed in the Bulletin have to be called in by the person who is ill, or by a member of their family. At the time they call in the name, they will be asked whether they are the sick person him/ herself, or a member of their family, and if they give permission for the name to be placed on the list. They will be asked for the correct spelling of the sick person's name. If a family member, they will be required to give their name for our records. Thank you for your patience regarding this new process. We wish to do all we can to offer our parish community the opportunity to offer prayers for those who are ill but we must also be cognizant of the fact that all members of our congregation are entitled to their privacy in this regard.
