2 Page Two Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 22, 2013 SAINTS ALIVE! St. Vincent de Paul Portraits of St. Vincent de Paul only suggest what was in the heart and mind of the man who is the patron saint of all charitable societies. He has a plain, peasant face, intelligent eyes, and the hint of a smile. But do not be deceived by that smile! Vincent de Paul - - even to his friends - - could be choleric and crabby. Of himself, he admitted that were it not for God s grace he would have been hard and repulsive, rough and cross. But grace did make the difference as it does for all saints. Vincent de Paul was born in Gascony in c1580. Despite his prefixed surname, he was not of noble birth. He was a peasant with keen intelligence. While not creative, he was a brilliant organizer, and this would be confirmed later in life when he founded the Congregation of the Mission for men and Sisters of Charity for women. While in his teens, he discerned a vocation and was ordained in His early years as a priest provided a comfortable living and some recognition. In 1605, on his return from Marseilles where he had claimed a legacy, he was captured by pirates. He was taken to Algeria. There he was sold as a slave. He managed to escape two years later. He went to Rome for further studies. For whatever reason he was chosen in 1608 for a secret mission to Henri IV, the King of France. He became chaplain to the queen, Marguerite de Valois, in Paris. At this point, Vincent de Paul had gone from being a slave to being a royal confidant, if not exactly a courtier. The high circle in which he traveled, introduced him to St. Francis de Sales in St. Francis appointed him spiritual director to the Visitation Community. Shortly thereafter, he became tutor and chaplain in the household of the Comte and Comtesse de Gondi. While in the service of the Gondis, Vincent de Paul had a life defining experience during the deathbed confession of a dying servant. Deeply moved, he made service of the poor his priority. Comte de Gondi, who was general of the galleys, appointed Vincent de Paul chaplain of the galley slaves in He also endowed and supported a group of missionaries to the local poor. This experience led Vincent de Paul to found his own Community of men in 1625 and the Sisters of Charity with St. Louise de Marillac in The men s group, the Congregation of the Mission, worked with the poor and the formation of priests. The Sisters of Charity emphasized working with the sick, orphans and children in need. To all his religious, their founder wrote: It is our duty to prefer the service of the poor to everything else and to offer service as quickly as possible. Vincent de Paul also had a practical turn of mind about acts of charity and prayer. Offer the deed to God as your prayer. Do not feel upset or guilty because you interrupted your prayer to serve the poor. God is not neglected if you leave Him for such service... Charity is certainly greater than any rule... All rules must lead to charity. Portraits of St. Vincent de Paul can never reveal what pictures of him and St. Louise de Marillac ministering in the streets can. (see bulletin cover) These are like snapshots of holiness, showing saints alive. The spirit of St. Vincent de Paul can never be captured in one quote, but I think the smile in most of his portraits might be there because of this one: You should never tread on the heels of Providence; but if Providence opens the way, you should run. -Fr. Luczak

3 Page Three Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 22, 2013 Dear Parishioners: GET IN IT TO WIN IT! It s the slogan of this year s Parish Raffle. Many of us have bought tickets, but as the thermometer poster shows, we re at the half way point in our ticket sales. We need to sell 2000 tickets for our jackpot grand prize to reach the $15,000. We ve sold approximately 900. If you haven t purchased your tickets yet, please purchase them soon. If you have bought tickets, as I have, consider buying more. I promise - - as I have in the past - - to present whatever I win as a gift to the parish. Also, consider selling raffle tickets to neighbors, friends and relatives. Friendly persuasion couldn t hurt! Our raffle is for a good cause. As a parish fundraiser, it is an important source of income. Remember the old joke about the man who was upset with God because he prayed very hard to win the lottery, but didn t? He stormed heaven for an answer from God: WHY DIDN T I WIN THE LOTTERY AFTER PRAYING SO HARD TO WIN IT? God answered him with YOU CAN T WIN IF YOU DON T BUY A TICKET! GET WITH IT - - BUY A TICKET! THAT S THE WAY TO GET IN IT TO WIN IT! -Fr. Luczak P.S. If I told you the joke before, it s what pastors do when they reach a certain age! Consider the message more important than the medium! FEASTDAY WEEKEND We will celebrate the Feast of St. Isaac Jogues & the North American Martyrs the weekend of October On Saturday, October 19, the actual feast day, parishioners have the opportunity to witness to our Catholic faith by praying outside of a facility that performs abortions, located on Elston Avenue, as part of the 40 Days for Life Campaign. We will be sharing this witness and service with St. John Brebeuf Parish as it is also their feast day. Sign up will take place in the next couple of weeks. The Solemn Feast Day Mass will be at 5 p.m. and will include Native American music by Mr. Bill Buckholtz. Following the Mass, 6:00-7:30 p.m. we will hold a Taste of St. Isaac Jogues down in the Parish Hall. At least eight groups will be providing tastes including American, Filipino, Indian, Irish, Italian, Middle Eastern, Nigerian, and Polish. Food and beverage tickets will be fifty cents each and tastes will probably be 1-4 tickets. Music and storytelling will feature Bill Buckholtz. Then the fun moves to the Holy Family Room where Patty and the Melts (Lisa Hall & family) will play, sing and encourage us to dance until 10 p.m.! On top of all this we will also draw the winning tickets for the PARISH 50/50 RAFFLE (are you in it yet to win it?) On Sunday we will have hospitality after all the Masses in the Holy Family Room. Come in for some treats and conversation. Invite former parishioners to join us for some or all of the feast day weekend activities. We are who we are as a parish community because of those who were here before us and who are here now! Pray for God s blessings as we give thanks for all He has accomplished through our parish and for the grace and strength to continue the mission of Jesus entrusted to us!

6 Page Six Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 22, 2013 From September 25 through November 3 parishes, organizations, and the faithful of the Archdiocese of Chicago, along with other Christians, will participate in 40 Days For Life, a national campaign of prayer, fasting, peaceful vigil and community outreach. During the 40 days individuals pray and fast for an end to abortion and continue to call upon local, state, and national leaders to protect all human life. Parishes and individuals across Chicago maintain a prayerful presence 24 hours a day every day of the 40 days in front of an abortion facility to change hearts and save lives by creating a strong Culture of Life through the Gospel of Life. For a sixth year the Archdiocese of Chicago will keep a peaceful, prayerful vigil at Albany Medical- Surgical Center (a late-term abortion facility) at 5086 N. Elston Avenue (Elston west of Cicero) in Chicago. In support of this 40 day effort, St. Isaac Jogues and St. John Brebeuf Parishes are working together to provide prayer coverage on the Feast of the North American Martyrs, Saturday, October 19, from Midnight to Midnight. This is a special opportunity for us to give witness to our faith in Christ and to our belief that human life is sacred and is to be respected and protected from the moment of conception. Sign up will take place in the Holy Family Room beginning next weekend, September Please give serious and prayerful consideration of this invitation to be a peaceful, prayerful voice for life. Talk with your family, friends and neighbors and plan on an hour to pray at the facility on October 19 th. We will especially need volunteers for those early morning hours beginning at midnight. The 40 Days for Life Campaign begins this Wednesday, Sept. 25 at 7 p.m. at the St. Jude s Chapel at the Women s Center on Cicero in Chicago. All are welcome! And remember that your prayers and presence on any of the 40 Days is welcome! For more information please call Dee Stanton, 847/ Who Will Fill These Shoes?... How many times in your life has a priest brought healing to you and your families? How many times has a priest celebrated the liturgy on Sunday, throughout the week and at special parish and family celebrations, bringing Christ to you through the Eucharist? How many times has a priest stood with you in joy at the birth of a child, at your bedside in the hospital, or in sorrow at the death of a loved one? Who will fill your priest s shoes to minister to your children and grandchildren - the next generation of the faithful? Let us pray for vocations to the priesthood; that we may have priests whose lives are directed by the Gospel of Jesus Christ in the service of God s people. Let us pray that there will always be a new generation of caring and compassionate priests who when asked the question, Who Will Fill These Shoes? respond enthusiastically, Here I Am Lord! Thank you for your ongoing prayers and financial support for this Collection for the Seminary System of the Archdiocese of Chicago.

Fasting not only includes abstaining from food, drink and sexual relations from sunrise to sunset, but also from evil thoughts, words and deeds. ADMISSION and PARKING ARE FREE Brats Hot Dogs Thuringers Available for purchase 6 PM - 8 PM Annual Cash Raffle $25 each or 5 for $100 For more info call: Sawm is obligatory and perceived as a spiritual and psychological counter against human passions and worldly desires. When this is undertaken, human submission to God becomes a restful pursuit, taken from the Arabic root of Sawm, to be at rest. Muslims end each day of fasting during Ramadan at sunset with an Iftar, or breaking of the fast. Here in Chicago our Muslim friends invite Catholics to an Iftar dinner each year. For Muslims, as well as for Catholics, the real object of fasting is to free us to turn more readily to God. Muslims express it as following God s will through striving for submission to God.
