Page Two November 18, 2012 Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time Thanksgiving: Eating and Believing Looks can be deceiving it s eating that s believing. James Thurber Do you agree with James Thurber? His seemingly irreverent aside is not that. Nor is it the creed of a religion of Foodism. There is, after all, a profound connection between God Talk and Food Talk. Did you know, for instance, that the word faith is used about 275 times in the Bible but the verb to eat occurs almost 800 times? Frankly, I have never thought about it until I was given a remarkable book, The Frugal Gourmet Keeps the Feast, Past, Present and Future. The late Jeff Smith was known as the Frugal Gourmet. A minister, chef, and television celebrity, Smith had unique theological insights. In the introduction to his 1995 collection of what could be called the Biblical Table, Smith notes: Jesus never says, Behold I stand at the door and knock. If anyone should open the door, I will enter and discuss existential theology with him. No. Jesus says, I will sup with him All of the Resurrection appearances occurred at the table, with the one exception of the appearance at the tomb. The rest are at meals: on the road to Emmaus, in the Upper Room, the fish fry on the edge of the Sea of Galilee. Thanksgiving, our special American Feast, was first celebrated by serious, Bible-centered Christians. They were Puritan dissenters. They saw themselves as pilgrims or as a New Israel who, through God s grace, had found the Promised Land. They endured adversity. Many of their com- pany had starved or had succumbed to other infirmities. Still, the remnant believed and were rewarded with a bountiful harvest. The celebration they prepared, with its abundant food and games, has been a model for Americans for almost 150 years. No matter what is served, the highlight of the Thanksgiving Feast is offering prayerful thanksgiving to God for his blessings. In our increasingly secularized society, some only concentrate on the food and games. They do not see the real sense of eating and believing and believing and eating. When I was at St. Edward Parish, our Liturgy Committee celebrated everything! The whole idea was to immerse ourselves in different cultural and religious festivals. That meant, don't just read about a festival and discuss it Put your stomach where your head is! The Rectory Dining Room or our Main Meeting Room was decorated. Recipes were given out. The end result was a little like Holy Pot Luck. We celebrated the Passover Seder, Polish Wigilia, German Christmas and Old English Twelfth Night. Even St. Edward s Minister Parties before Christmas included St. Nicholas celebrations featuring Greek, French, Irish, and Italian customs. We even celebrated Hanukkah with a visit from Hanukkah Man who distributed chocolate coins and taught us how to play dreydl. Spinning a top for chocolate coins and eating latkes showed us how to eat and believe. Enjoyment can be a form of prayer! This Thanksgiving, don't forget to say Grace! But don t treat your prayer like a debt or a tax that must be paid. Treat your banquet as something holy, your family and guests as blessings from the Lord. Remember too Thanksgiving is not a feast for a day, but a lifetime! Whoever is of a merry heart has a continual feast (Proverbs 15:15). Fr. Luczak

Page Three Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time November 18, 2012 THANKSGIVING GRACE In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. AMEN. Come, let us welcome the feast of Thanksgiving with joy and with light. Light is the symbol of the divine. The Lord is our light and our salvation. May the light of gratitude burn brightly in our hearts and around this table, not only on the feast of Thanksgiving but at all meals. (Light candles.) In the silence of our hearts let each of us give thanks for all the many gifts that are ours. (You may wish to have each person name one or two gifts for which they particularly give thanks.) Let us also be mindful of those today who are without food and a home. (Name other people who are in need of prayerful support today) And let us remember those whom we love who are not now present at our table. (Name the persons aloud if you wish) Lord of Gifts, from your holy heart has come a flood of gifts to us. With uplifted hearts, we have gathered around this table to thank you with prayer and with the worship of feasting. We are grateful not only for the gifts of life itself, but for all the gifts of friendship, love, devotion and forgiveness that we have shared. On this feast of giving thanks, Lord God, we thank you for showing us how to return thanks by lives of service, by deeds of hospitality, by kindness to a stranger and by concern for each other. (We thank you for the presence of our guests, who, by their being present in our home, have added to the brightness of our celebration.) We are most grateful, this feast day, for the way you, our hidden God, have become visible to us in one another, in countless daily gifts and in the marvels of creation. Come, Lord of Gifts, and bless our table and all the food of this feast. Let us thank the Lord, today and all days. AMEN! From Prayers For the Domestic Church by Edward Hays

Page Four Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time November 18, 2012 LOTION DRIVE: SUCCESS! The Teen Group thanks everyone for their help with the lotion drive. Last Sunday 185+ large bottles of lotion, plus other donations, were bagged, tagged, and brought to the Little Sisters of the Poor. Mother Patricia was touched and very grateful for everyone s thoughtfulness and efforts. She wanted you to know that the Sisters and the residents of St. Mary s House hold you in their prayers. TEEN GROUP MEETING The next Teen Group meeting is Sunday, November 25, at 11:30 a.m., downstairs in the Parish Hall. We will be baking cookies for our visit to the Little Sisters of the Poor Residence and continue our work on the video for the Year of Sunday Mass. All teens are welcome! Please call Mrs. Stanton, 847/ , if you have questions. ARTHRITIS A PAIN? Please join us for an informative presentation on simple joint exercises, prevention and appropriate tools and devices to assist you with your daily living skills, functional mobility and the road to BETTER HEALTH! It will be given by the Physical and Occupational Therapy Department of The Abington of Glenview on Thursday, November 29 th, 7-8 p.m. in the Holy Family Room. Hospitality will follow. All are welcome! (Ministers of Care will have a brief meeting after the presentation.) ALTAR SERVERS Christmas availability forms are due in the RE Office no later than this Monday night. There will be a meeting for ALL Altar Servers on Monday, November 26 at 6:00 p.m. We will finish before RE Class begins. The Saint Isaac Jogues Women s Club gives a big thank you to all of our parishioners for the many donations to our annual coat drive. We collected 19 huge contractor bags of coats, sweaters, shoes, pants, blouses, dresses, bedding (comforters, sheets), towels, umbrellas, and a large bag of toothbrushes & toothpaste. You were very generous. And all this was on such short notice. It was amazing! You can only imagine how thankful the recipients are. A Happy and Blessed Thanksgiving to our parishioners from the RE Students and Families, Faculty and Staff! We appreciate your prayers, good example, encouragement and support throughout the year as we grow in our Catholic Faith. God bless you! Thank you, RE families, for your generous support of the Thanksgiving Project. Four families are benefiting from your prayers and donations! If you did not send a donation (non-perishable food or monetary), but still want to do so, please send it with your child Monday night. It will help the St. Vincent De Paul Ministry and food pantry. Families are reminded that if they want conferences with their children s catechists, they may contact the RE Office, 847/ , and leave a message. The catechists will call you back and set up a mutually convenient time.

Page Five November 18, 2012 Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time YEAR OF SUNDAY MASS: QUESTION OF THE WEEK For the past 2000 years we have been awaiting the return of the Son of Man, waiting for Him to send out the angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the end of the earth to the end of the sky. (Mark 13:27) How would you live your life differently if you knew that today is the day and this is the hour when the Son of Man will be coming in the clouds? (Mark 13:26) How can you use this time of waiting for the Second Coming to act as Jesus would in your daily and weekly relationship with God s people? KNOW THE MASS, ONE WORD AT A TIME: SIGN In ordinary life we don t usually sign or mark ourselves. At Mass we do so several times. We trace the pattern of the cross or sign ourselves at the beginning of Mass, at the reading of the Gospel, and at the end of Mass for the final blessing. Something important is at work in this simple gesture. The act of signing the cross on our bodies symbolically pulls us into intimate contact with the reality of the cross of Jesus. It is entirely understandable that we want to identify ourselves with the cross of Jesus. The cross, after all, has freed us from sin and death. It is the source of our new life in Christ. Of course, we take its image and impress that on our bodies in making the sign of the cross. It makes sense to make the sign of the cross at Mass, because the Mass itself makes present the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross: This is my body which will be given up for you. Our gesture of signing and Jesus self sacrifice for us meet in the Mass we celebrate. Louis J. Cameli, 2012 Archdiocese of Chicago: Liturgy Training Publications THANKSGIVING DAY MASS All are welcome to begin the holiday celebration with Thanksgiving Day Mass on Thursday at 9:00 a.m. Please note this is the only Mass of the day. ECUMENICAL/INTERRELIGIOUS COMMITTEE We encourage all parishioners to plan now to attend the Annual Thanksgiving Interfaith Service, which will be held at St. Luke s Christian Community Church on Wednesday, November 21, at 7:30 p.m. St. Luke s is located at 9233 Shermer Road in Morton Grove. Come join with our Christian, Jewish and Muslim brothers and sisters as we praise God from whom all blessings flow! The Ecumenical/Interreligious Committee will gather for a short meeting on Wednesday, November 21, at 6:00 p.m. in the Rectory to discuss insights from A Handbook of Spiritual Ecumenism and ideas for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. We will then go to the Thanksgiving Interfaith Service. PATRIOTIC ROSARY The Patriotic Rosary will be prayed every Friday at 7:00 p.m. in church for the healing and guidance of our nation. On First Friday each month, 7 p.m. Midnight, we will have Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, praying of the Patriotic Rosary followed by the praying of all the mysteries of the Rosary, the Divine Mercy Chaplet and Benediction. All are encouraged to give the gift of prayer to our country weekly, monthly or as your time allows. GIVING TREE COLLECTION Please note that in your monthly envelope packet was an envelope for the Giving Tree. There will be a second collection taken up next weekend, November 24-25, to assist our St. Vincent DePaul Ministry to purchase gifts for the nursing home/facilities we serve in the area. Please be generous as we help share the Spirit of Christmas with others. Giving Tree envelopes can also be found at the doors of the church today and next weekend if you do not receive monthly envelopes.

Page Six Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time November 18, 2012 The Vigil, the Funeral Liturgy and the Committal set us on a path to a true healing, wholeness and peace. Your Christian Burial Rites... Vigil, Liturgy and Committal The Vigil (Wake Service), the Funeral Liturgy (Mass), and the Committal (Burial/Entombment) each have distinct purposes in the journey to healing and wholeness. The Vigil, the Funeral Liturgy and the Committal set us on a path to healing, wholeness and peace. We don t have to face it alone, nor should we, our church will be there for us, for that we are truly thankful. Vigil for the Deceased (Wake) The Vigil (Wake Service) is truly a time to laugh, cry, remember and pray. A time to rejoice in all that the person was and is. This can truly be a healing time for those who are hurting. The Vigil for the Deceased is the first way that the Church captures the sentiments of those who are grieving and sets them in the context of our faith. A prayer service with readings selected from Scripture to fit the circumstances of the deceased, a homily that comforts and gives hope, intercessions that speak to the faith of those gathered around the deceased, and prayers selected from the rich resources found in the Order of Christian Funerals can do a great deal to prepare people to enter into the Christian spirit of the Funeral Liturgy. The Rosary or other prayers to the Blessed Virgin Mary can be part of the Vigil. Eulogies are best given at an appropriate time during the Vigil Service (Wake). While there is a natural desire to say good things about a person who has died, we must always remember that in the context of prayer, it is the working of God s grace in the life of the deceased for which we want to give thanks and praise. Eulogies in the context of prayer must be more than mere tributes to the goodness of the deceased. There must be a reference to what God has done for the deceased person and for us through him/her. Priests and parish bereavement ministers are available to assist families in selecting Scripture readings and music for the wake service and funeral liturgies. Funeral Liturgy (Mass) The Funeral Liturgy (Mass) is our great Thank You to God who created us, died for us, and who is calling each of us back to Himself. In this step the focus shifts slightly from emphasis on the deceased to God s saving works through Jesus Christ. The Mass, particularly at the time of death, is truly a special moment, a holy moment, a God-moment. Celebrating the funeral liturgy at Mass in the parish church is the normal way in which most Catholics experience the Order of Christian Funerals. The Eucharist looks forward to our participation in the heavenly banquet, where we are united with Jesus, the saints, and all those who share eternal life. Jesus said, whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood shall live forever. (John 6:54) The Eucharist is truly the central point in a Catholic funeral. Its effectiveness is greatly enhanced when the family participates in appropriate ways: clothing the casket with the pall, selecting the Scripture readings, serving as lectors or extraordinary ministers, singing the responses and the hymns and, most especially, receiving Holy Communion. The funeral homily is of utmost importance in the funeral liturgy. A homily may only be delivered by a priest or a deacon, as liturgical homilies are part of the sacramental rite of the Eucharist. The homily speaks of the mystery of Christ s death and resurrection and gives the deeper meaning that is found in the experience of death and dying. The homily occurs within the context of a funeral Mass that is offered for the forgiveness of sins and the salvation of the soul of the faithful departed. Rite of Committal (Cemetery) The last step - the last concrete act we can do for our loved ones in this world - is the Committal, the burial or entombment of the remains of the deceased. The relationships, bonds and communion we build with one another in faith are not broken by death. Resting in a holy place with our brothers and sisters is a profound statement of that belief. The Rite of Committal is the final liturgy in the Order of Christian Funerals. Like the Vigil Service, the Rite of Committal makes use of

Page Seven Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time November 18, 2012 Scripture, a few words of hope by the presider, intercessions and prayers. A Catholic cemetery is a sacred place of honor and respect for those who have died. It is a memorial to all who are interred there. It is a sacred place where Catholics come to express their grief and hope in the resurrection for their loved ones who have preceded them in death. It is a blessed ground, fitting for someone whose body was a temple of the Holy Spirit on earth and now awaits the resurrection from the dead. To have a representative of the Church present at this final moment is a great source of consolation to those who will now have to continue their journey in life without their beloved. While a priest may be unable to preside at the Committal Service, a deacon or a trained bereavement minister may represent the Church at this final moment. Carson s Community Day was a huge success! Thanks to everyone who helped with this event. Watch for the next major sale at Carsons next year. Again, thanks for you generous support. GIVING TREE It is time to begin preparing for our Giving Tree event! Every year, in December, your St. Vincent de Paul Ministry visits our neighboring Nursing Homes, bringing gifts, music and cheer to the residents. As many of you may know, life as a resident in a nursing home is often difficult. Some residents are recovering from an illness and will be able to get back to their homes and families soon, but many residents remain there as a final residence. Our parish tradition over more than 20 years has been to share our bounty by giving nursing home residents, one communal gift which can be enjoyed throughout the year. We also give each resident a small Christmas balloon to brighten up their rooms and help spread the holiday spirit. We rely on your support to make it possible for us to continue our Giving Tree tradition. This year, instead of placing Giving Tree envelopes in our church bulletins, where they can fall out and paper the church floor, we have included them in the November collection envelopes which are mailed to your home. Extra Giving Tree envelopes can be found at the entrances to the church. Please return your donation in the Giving Tree envelope, along with your regular contribution. Donations may be made at any time, up to and including Christmas. Further details about the Giving Tree event will be published in the following weeks. Peace be with you! St. Vincent de Paul Ministry of St. Isaac Jogues Please remember to bring a new unwrapped toy for Santa s Sleigh on December 1 & 2 and help him bring joy to the children at Maternity BVM Church, our sharing Parish.
