2 Page Two Mother s Day May 13, 2012 FATIMA ANNIVERSARY On October 13, in spite of a major storm, a huge crowd gathered in anticipation a promised sign at the Cova da Iria. The storm continued as the Blessed Virgin appeared. She announced that she was the Lady of the Rosary. Opening her hands, rays of light extended toward the sun. Suddenly, the sun changed colors and spun out of control. It seemed to hurl itself toward the earth. People screamed and thought they were experiencing the end of the world! Then, all at once, the sun returned to its place in the heavens. The water-logged terrain and rain-soaked crowds were now warm and dry - - as if it had never even rained! The visionaries saw a heavenly tableaux - - the Mysteries of the Rosary, the Holy Family, St. Joseph and the Blessed Virgin as Our Lady of Sorrows and Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Since 1917, the message of Fatima has reached out to the faithful. Despite the fall of Communism and a fragile peace following two World Wars, the need for prayer and reparation for sin is still a major concern. This Sunday, May 13, marks the ninety-fifth anniversary of the first apparition of the Blessed Virgin at Fatima. According to the account, three children - - Lucia dos Santos and her cousins Francisco and Jacinto Marto - - were tending their sheep in the Cova da Iria when they saw a sudden, brilliant flash of light. Above the branches of a small oak tree, a beautiful lady dressed in white seemed to radiate intense light. Do not be afraid, the lady told the children. She also told them that she would return to the Cova on the thirteenth day for six consecutive months. The Lady asked them if they were willing to dedicate themselves to God and accept suffering in reparation for sins and the conversion of sinners. The children said yes. Please take a special holy card from the Pilgrim Virgin Foundation. Pray the rosary daily, make sacrifices of reparation for sin, and consecrate yourself to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. In the message of Fatima there is a sobering realization that there is great danger, but also a genuine hope for the world. Our commitment to the Peace Plan from Heaven can make a profound difference for the future of our planet. Fr. Luczak An important part of their dedication was to pray the rosary to obtain peace for the world and an end of the First World War. Over the next few months the children of Fatima endured ridicule, rejection and threats from anti-christian, local officials. Despite obstacles and suffering, they returned to the Cova and prayed the rosary offering personal sacrifices in reparation for sins committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

3 Page Three Mother s Day May 13, 2012 Lori Herbert, Our New Business Manager! Congratulations to Lori Herbert, our new Business Manager. She officially took the reins from Deacon Bob Kerls on May 1, Lori joined our parish staff in April of 2011, working on a parttime basis as a data-processor and bulletin editor, and so she has already had the pleasure of working with us this past year. Lori comes to us with broad financial, managerial and human resources experience after a 38-year career with AXA/Equitable, where she retired as a full Vice-President in New York in Her responsibilities included managing projects of over $30 million in the areas of technology implementation, health & welfare benefit changes and new compensation plans. Originally from the South side of Chicago and a Sox fan, Lori married a local boy from Morton Grove, who has yet to transform her into a Cubs fan. Lori s husband John, also a Business Manager, is currently enrolled in the Institute of Diaconal Studies at the University of St. Mary of the Lake in Mundelein, and is hoping to be ordained in May of 2014 and completing his masters work in Theology at Catholic Theological Union. Both Lori and John are very involved at St. Martha parish where Lori is the Parish Council President. Lori and John have one son, Nick, who is a professional chef and owns his own catering business. Lori enjoys working with him whenever she can. Lori and John live in Morton Grove and spend their free time gardening and walking with their two dogs, a solid-white, 5-year-old Samoyed-Huskie mix named Bud E. Bear, and a 4 month-old Chocolate Lab named Ted E. Bear. -Fr. Luczak The Filipino-American Organization of SIJ is sponsoring a dinner/dance fundraiser Friday, May 18, 6:30 PM at Chevy Chase Country Club in Wheeling. Tickets to the dinner/dance ($50 pre-paid and $60 at the door) and Raffle (3 tickets for $10 or $5 each-1st prize: $300, 2nd: $200; 3rd: $100) are still available. Last year s Fil-Am fundraiser helped pay for the Our Mother of Perpetual Help icon and the $4020 votive lights. Thank you.

The Corpus Christi Outdoor Procession and other special Masses to be held this summer will be discussed. PENTECOST At the 9 a.m. Mass on Pentecost Sunday, May 27 th, we will be praying the petitions in various languages. 5 Page Five Mother s Day May 13, 2012 HUMAN CONCERNS ECUMENICAL/ INTERRELIGIOUS COMMITTEE Our next meeting is this Tuesday, May 15 at 7 p.m. at the Rectory. We will discuss the June 3 Prayer for Christian Unity observance, the Fall presentation and the coming year s calendar. If you are unable to attend, please contact Dee or Fr. Luczak. JUNE CHICAGO-WIDE ECUMENICAL SUNDAY On Sunday, June 3 rd (Trinity Sunday in the Western Church and Pentecost in the Orthodox Church) St. Isaac Jogues Parish has the opportunity to join with other Catholics and Christians in the Chicago area at St. Hedwig Church for a Prayer for Christian Unity observance. Refreshments and conversation will be from 4-5 p.m. followed by a prayer service, 5-6 p.m. Cardinal George is scheduled to be present. Our parish has been asked to make a small display of what we did during the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity in January of this year to share with participants. It is our plan to provide a bus to St. Hedwig if enough people indicate an interest. The church is located at 2226 N. Hoyne Avenue in Chicago. We would leave about 2:45 p.m. and return about 7 p.m. Everyone is invited and encouraged to experience this special observance with other followers of our Lord Jesus Christ! STAMPS FOR THE MISSIONS Canceled postage stamps are being collected, sorted and processed by Franciscan Friars Andrew Giba, OFM, and Anthony Gancarz, OFM, (of Fr. Cam and Fr. Kennedy s community). The stamps are then sold to a dealer in Green Bay, WI and the proceeds from the sale of the stamps go to support the work of St. Francis Mission in Greenwood, Mississippi and other mission activities. The process is simple there are only two rules: Leave at least a ¼ inch border around the stamp, it may be larger but the minimum is ¼; no non-profit or machine stamps. PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY The Prayer Shawl Ministry meets this Thursday, May 17 th, at 10:00 a.m. in Rm. 6 of the school. New members are welcome. Please bring your own knitting needles or crocheting hooks. Yarn is available.

6 Page Six Mother s Day May 13, 2012 ST ISAAC JOGUES MEN S CLUB The St. Isaac Jogues Men s Club Annual Installation Dinner will be held Thursday, May 17th at the Des Plaines Elks Club, 495 Lee St., Des Plaines, Il. Cocktails and hors d oeuvers will be served at 6:30PM with open bar till 7:30PM. At 7:30PM you will have your choice of Prime Rib or Orange Roughy. After dinner, the installation of the incoming officers for the years will be installed by Fr. Andrew Luczak. The Man of the Year award will then be presented by Jim Hilliard. After the ceremony there will be an open bar until 11:30PM. Cost of this great evening is $40.00! All men of the parish are invited to attend. ALTAR FLOWERS CAN BE A BEAUTIFUL TRIBUTE Parishioners are invited to decorate the altar with flowers in honor or memory of a loved one. There will be two arrangements each week. 7 Page Seven Mother s Day May 13, 2012 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION RE NEWS * Families who have a tuition balance or sacrament fee remaining for this current year are asked to send their payment in this week or next. If you have a financial concern, please call Dolores Stanton, 847/ , to discuss some options. No one is denied religious education due to finances. * The RE Students, Catechists and Assistants invite family members and parishioners to their end of the year prayer service, which includes a May crowning. Mrs. Burdi s First Grade Class will help lead our prayer. Join us in giving thanks to God for another year of growing in our faith! * Faculty members who have not turned in their reflections about this past year are asked to do so on Monday. Remember to RSVP for the end of the year celebration on May 21. * Registration information for the RE Program has been mailed out to families currently in the RE Program. Registration for returning and new families will be held this Monday, May 14 th, at 7:30 p.m. in the Holy Family Room. Families who are new to the program or who will be registering another child will need to fill out appropriate forms that evening. A copy of their baptismal certificate will also be needed (if the child was not baptized here at St. Isaac Jogues Parish). Tuition for for parishioners (those registered in the parish and who use their envelopes and/ or give time to the parish through a ministry) is: $160 one child; $270 two children; $330 three or more children. Tuition for non-parishioners (those not registered in the parish, or who are registered but do not use their envelopes or give time) is: $240 one child; $350 two children; $410 three or more children. Sacrament fees are: First Reconciliation/ First Communion -- $50; Confirmation Year I -- $10; Confirmation Year II -- $30. Please note that no one is denied religious education because of a difficulty with finances. RE Classes for Kindergarten are on Sunday mornings, 10:30-11:30 a.m. Grades 1-Confirmation Year II meet on Monday evenings, 6:45-8:00 p.m. Families are strongly encouraged to have their children attend each year as no one year fully covers and forms a child s faith development. Please note that a child must participate in religious education classes, either through an RE Program or a Catholic School, the two years prior to receiving a sacrament. Families with older children who have not yet received religious education or sacraments or who have children with special needs are encouraged to call us to discuss options available. Some special guest performances are promised again! You won t want to miss it! LIVING CITY Today, members o the Focolare Movement will be selling single copies of their publication, Living City. Living City is a magazine for everyone. It contains articles on events in the Church, ecumenism, family life and the spirituality of unity. There are also experiences of people, both young and old, who try to apply the Gospel in their daily lives, at home and at work. We encourage you to purchase a copy of this beautiful Catholic magazine. The 2013 Mass Book is now available. Anyone wishing to reserve Masses for loved ones or special intentions may do so. Please note: we will take only one intention for each liturgy. We suggest a $10.00 stipend for each Mass. According to the Code of Canon Law 948: Separate Masses must be applied for the intentions of those for whom an individual offering, even if small, has been made and accepted. What is normative in the practice of the Church is that there be separate individual Masses offered for individual intentions. Parish School: St. John Brebeuf School BULLETIN SICK LIST The sick and hospitalized are to be held in thought and prayer. For their family, friends, and faith community it is often times the best, and sometimes even only, way we can help and support them. Yet we must remember that by law we cannot publicly let our parish community know the health status of any of our members without their permission. What that means is that we cannot put people s names in the bulletin sick list for prayer without permission. As a reminder our policy is as follows: Names for the sick list in the bulletin have to be called in by the person who is ill or by a member of their family. At the time they call in the name they will be asked whether they are the sick person him/herself, or a member of their family and if they give permission for the name to be placed on the list. They will be asked for the correct spelling of the sick person s name. If a family member, they will be required to give their name for our records. The name will be in the bulletin for one month. Then the person s name will be inscribed in the Book of Community Prayer. All people and prayer requests are remembered during the petitions at all the weekend Masses. Their names will also be given to our Ministers of Praise to pray for them daily.
