2 Page Two Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 20, 2009 PARISH LIFE COMMISSION: Welcoming, Belonging and Celebrating Our Life The first time I saw a top-notch musical play was in It was the Chicago production of My Fair Lady. Before that, I had learned to love the old film version of Shaw s Pygmalion with Wendy Hiller and Leslie Howard. True to Shaw, but beholden to the genius of Lerner and Lowe, "My Fair Lady" had a number of brilliant, show-stopping numbers. One of my favorites erupts when E1iza, over-schooled and up to her neck in WORDS, sings SHOW ME! I'm sure that anyone who is a regular at Church, a volunteer, club member, or minister, may empathize with Eliza's rant. The Word was made flesh - - that was a miracle! What is more usual is that words beget words. And those words beget even more words, and those words become compound and then compound - complex in waves of prolixity...and life becomes one great run-on sentence! But it doesn't have to be that way! Words can motivate. Words can inspire action. The Archdiocesan guidelines for a Parish Life Commission say a great deal about mission and purpose, but they do more. They help us to "see ourselves" in action. The Parish Life Commission's main concern is to help build community in the parish and foster a sense of belonging. This commission encompasses all efforts that can strengthen the Christian community in love. This commission can help bring some freshness of vision into parish organizations and to focus the groups' impact on the communal life of the parish. It does this by promoting communications between parish organizations, coordinating activities and parish events, and helping all those involved in parish groups to work together toward a common goal. The scope of this commission includes all community building events in the parish, such as family life programs, community focused activities, welcoming new parishioners, picnics, anniversaries, coffee- - after Mass, Christmas bazaars, breakfasts and socials. Most of these concrete examples of Parish Life are outward bound. A very happily involved Parish Life Commission member (in another parish) described it as "a ministry of parties." Of course, it is that, but more. The inward bound of Parish Life helps existing organizations to focus on how their own sense of mission can cooperate with the parish mission statement and goals. To the extent that organizations and groups see the big picture of what is best for the parish as a whole, they exercise stewardship and leadership in the best sense. Competition is better left to athletes and politicians. Cooperation strengthens and defines a community of Faith. Here at St. Isaac Jogues Parish, we need a Parish Life Commission that represents both our tradition and our openness to the NEW. That is why membership in a Parish Life Commission should include representatives of groups like the Woman s Club, the Men s Club and Bingo as well as well as those from ethnic groups- - Filipinos, Poles, Indians, Italians, Irish, etc. The interaction and shared wisdom of diverse parish groups can help us to be

I believe in the restoration of the Commissions as a positive, practical step toward the reformation of a Parish Pastoral Council. I believe it because I have seen it happen. St. Lambert Parish Pastoral Council evolved gradually. In 1991, a group called The Social Club planned and sponsored Hospitality Sundays, Welcome Breakfasts, a Heritage Dinner and a parish newspaper called The Good News. In time, the enthusiasm and success of this group encouraged others to take on the work of Spiritual Life, Human Concerns, and Education. People from these leadership groups eventually began the process of that led to the inauguration of a Parish Pastoral Council. If we take our commissions seriously here, and work together in the spirit of openness and charity, the reformation of a Parish Pastoral Council will happen. It will happen with the cooperation of the pastor, staff and those who are willing to be informed and formed as future leaders. If you are interested in the Parish Life Commission or leadership training, please contact the Rectory or talk to me personally. after Mass. A description of Training the Trainers, a three session workshop sponsored by the Archdiocesan Office for Councils, also appears in this Sunday Bulletin. Please read it and consider it in the light of what has been said. If you want a more active part in the life of our parish, don't tell me, SHOW ME! -Fr. Luczak TRAINING THE TRAINERS (3 Sessions). If you are in the process of beginning a PPC, wish to revamp your present PPC, or train Trainers as PPC Resource persons, this program is for you. This Parish Pastoral Council training process is designed for pastors, parish staff representatives and/or key lay leaders who are willing to assume the responsibility for the formation or renewal of their Parish Pastoral Council. The lnput/practicum is: "Skills of Facilitation," "Principles for Effective Organization of Parish Pastoral Councils," "Ecclesiology/ Theology of Parish Pastoral Councils/ Commissions," and "Skills that Support a Collaborative Model of Decision Making." Rectory Roof Repair Update Work was completed on Phase II of the Rectory Roof Repair during August. With the exception of one leak (now repaired) it appears to have been successful. Collected Goal Difference Phase II $10,221 $27,000 ($16,779) SPIRITUAL LIFE Join us in the Archdiocesan wide --40 DAYS FOR LIFE CAMPAIGN St. Isaac Jogues & St. John Brebeuf Parishes are conjointly taking responsibility for 1 day of the 40 Days For Life Campaign. We will mark Respect Life Month in a particular way on our North American Martyrs Feast Day, Monday, October 19 th, from Midnight to Midnight. We will keep a peaceful vigil, praying for an end to abortion in our country and respect for the holiness of all life. Each person who signs up will pray for one hour in front of the Albany Medical-Surgical Center (which performs late-term abortions), located about 5 miles from our parishes at 5086 N. Elston Avenue just west of Cicero at Carmen Street in Chicago. Both Fr. Luczak and Fr. May have given their approval of this holy work. Sign up is taking place in the Holy Family Room after all Masses today and next weekend. Provide your name and telephone number for the hour(s) that you will be present to pray, and sign the 40 Days for Life Statement of Peace stating you will conduct yourself peacefully and prayerfully and show respect for all people and property. You will also receive an information sheet.

For more information call Saint Isaac Jogues Parish contacts Dee Stanton or Julie Higgins at 847/ RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is a process of prayer, reflection, study and discussion for individuals who have never been baptized; who are baptized Christians but who seek to learn more about the Catholic Church; or who are baptized Catholics but have not received First Communion and Confirmation. We meet on Sunday mornings, 9:00-10:15 a.m. in the Religious Education Office. Please be sure to also pass this invitation along to someone you know who might be interested. For more information please call Dee Stanton or Joyce Mills at 847/ A LITTLE CHANGE MAKES A BIG DIFFERENCE As we prepare to observe Respect Life Month in October, stop by the Holy Family Room next weekend before or after any of the Masses and pick up a baby bottle or two. Then fill the bottle(s) with your spare change each day. Every penny, nickel, dime, quarter, dollar bill, etc. will be sent to the Women s Center to encourage and support their pro-life work, which includes counseling, ultra sounds, material and spiritual support for pregnant women so that they will carry and give birth to their unborn children. Please undertake this holy effort on behalf of life, for as the theme of Respect Life month states, Every child brings us God s smile. CHRISTMAS WREATHS The Christmas Wreath Sale will be held the last weekend of November here at St. Isaac Jogues and proceeds will benefit The Women s Center. While they will have the usual assortment of smaller wreaths and holly plants, it is necessary for us to place a special order for larger wreaths. If you would like to order a 48- inch balsam wreath ($50) or a 60-inch balsam wreath ($70), please call the Religious Education Office, 847/ , by October 1 st. Please note: Ordering a large wreath is a commitment to buy it. We cannot return any that are ordered. Thank you! BLESSING OF ANIMALS In anticipation of the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi a blessing of animals will take place at the field next to the Rectory on Saturday, October 3 rd, at 1:00 p.m. ST. ISAAC JOGUES NOVENA In anticipation of the feast day weekend (October 17-18) to honor our patron, St. Isaac Jogues, and the other North American Martyrs, a nine-day novena will be held beginning October 8 th. The novena will include song, scripture, litany, novena prayer and other prayer form (Rosary, Holy Hour, etc.). More information soon! MISSION TRIP APPEAL One of our college parishioners, Christine Mattappillil, is going on a mission trip to Belize (in Central America), January 2-16, to help the people of St. Peter Claver Parish. Christine is hoping that St. Isaac Jogues Parish will assist her with prayers and with contributions to cover her share of the group s expenses. Bless you for participating in this practical way! ************************************************************************************** HUMAN CONCERNS DIVORCE RECOVERY PROGRAM A 10-week program to bring healing to those who have been through a divorce will be held on Mondays, Sept. 21- Nov. 23, 7:00-8:45 p.m., at the Kinane Center of St. Paul of the Cross Parish, 215 Ridge Terrace in Park Ridge. Each meeting focuses on a different aspect of the divorce healing process such as grief, stress, anger, blame & guilt, loneliness, forgiveness and happiness. Each includes prayer, education, and peer interaction. Former program participants help facilitate the program and are available for support. Questions? Shots will be given on a first come-first served basis. In order to be vaccinated, women who are pregnant must bring a prescription from their obstetrician. The fee for a flu shot is $30 and $45 for a pneumonia shot. Those with proof of Medicare Part B will not be charged (Maxim will bill Medicare). If you have insurance, you can request a receipt. Anyone wishing to reserve Masses for loved ones or special intentions may do so. Please note: we will take only one intention for each liturgy. We suggest a $10.00 stipend for each Mass. What is normative in the practice of the Church is that there be separate individual Masses offered for individual intentions. We have tried to keep close track of these names for our Bulletin as they are made available to us. However, now we face an important privacy issue, very much like the issues faced by hospitals, health institutions, and certainly by other parishes. We cannot (by law) publicly let our parish community know the health status of any of our members without their permission. We appreciate the fact that often friends, neighbors, and acquaintances wish to do something special for a person who is ill, and ask to place their name on the list to be prayed for. While their intentions are surely good, we simply can no longer accept names in this manner. We will institute a new process regarding calling in names for the Bulletin list. Names for the sick list placed in the Bulletin have to be called in by the person who is ill, or by a member of their family. At the time they call in the name, they will be asked whether they are the sick person him/ herself, or a member of their family, and if they give permission for the name to be placed on the list. They will be asked for the correct spelling of the sick person's name. If a family member, they will be required to give their name for our records. Thank you for your patience regarding this new process.
