2 Page Two Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary July 27, 2008 miss the author s intent. The 1982 production of Brideshead was beautiful to look at even if its characters fell short of a Good Housekeeping Seal. I felt, nonetheless, that its religious sense was both true and compelling. Birideshead Revisited proclaims: God loves us warts and all! He doesn t give up on anyone. In a marvelous quote from G. K. Chesterton, Waugh describes God as a fisherman: I caught him with an unseen hook and an invisible line long enough to let him wander to the ends of the world and still bring him back with a twitch upon a thread. Something Fishy: BRIDESHEAD REVISITED REVISITED? They re making a new version of Brideshead Revisited! Last Sunday s Sun Times broke the news. While I generally distrust anything I read in the Sun Times, I had no reason to doubt the pedestrian interview with British actor Matthew Goode, who will play Charles Ryder in the new film. My first impulse was to say out loud, Oh, no! The eleven part, very handsomely mounted and brilliantly acted series that aired in 1982 was a milestone. Judging by contemporary standards, the new version is likely to be a millstone. Back in 1982, I feared that the popularity of the series might spawn some kind of sequel. Imagine, Brideshead Revisited Revisited? That s a little like The Son of Brideshead or Hamlet Goes Hawaiian! Now, alas, my fears are realized. I cannot imagine how a feature length film that can do justice to Evelyn Waugh s remarkable novel. In 1948, Evelyn Waugh negotiated with MGM for the film rights to Brideshead Revisted. Apparently, Waugh feared that his faith-inspired novel would be reduced to a conventional love story. In a memo to MGM, he wrote : The novel deals with what is theologically termed the operation of grace the unmerited and unilateral act of love by which God continually calls souls to Himself. Grace is not confined to the happy, prosperous, or conventionally virtuous This image makes our human search for God into God s pursuit of Man. Having heard the rumor that God is dead, our world may be too easily swayed by bad news. However, the moment evidence to the contrary appears something revealing God s power, mercy, or love then we are hooked. With a twitch upon the thread, we may struggle to escape, but who can, at that point, deny the existence of the Fisherman? When I first read Brideshead Revisited in 1962, I was at a turning point in my life. I was an enthusiastic revert (a returning Catholic) and was experiencing the beginning of a call to the priesthood. Twenty years later, the Brideshead series confirmed my solid conviction about grace offered to even the worst of sinners. I have been very disappointed in recent efforts to bring religious fiction to the big screen. Graham Greene s The End of the Affair made graphic sex more memorable than the hero s miraculous return to life! Some how, I sense the new Brideshead will be similarly sidetracked. If you have never read or seen Brideshead Revisited, all of this may not be relevant. But if you have never read or seen it, just remember that The Kingdom of Heaven is like a dragnet cast into the sea, in which every kind of fish is caught (Matthew 13:47). From Brideshead and the Bible, it is not irreverent to conclude that God definitely is not dead. God s just gone fishing. - Fr. Luczak MGM scrapped the Brideshead project, understandably. Perhaps the studio believed that people weren t ready for religion. Thirty-four years later, Brideshead Revisited did emerge from its cinematic cocoon as a $9,900,000 butterfly. It had the kind of style that money can t buy. Happily, Waugh s directive wasn t lost in marbled halls or the boudoir. Still, it is possible that many did

This section is often referred to as the book of comfort because of the encouragement it gives. Today s passage is a glorious finale to this book of comfort : Poor people are being invited to a sumptuous banquet. ROMANS: Today s reading concludes the eighth chapter of Paul s letter to the Romans. This chapter reflects on the salvation brought about by God in and through Jesus. Paul concludes this section with a jubilant hymn that celebrates the love of God expressed in Christ.

4 Page Four Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 27, 2008 EDUCATION RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS *Registration for the Religious Education Program for families with children in K-Gr. 8 is ongoing! If you have not yet taken care of this important task, please contact the RE Office this week and set up a time to register, 847/ Kindergarten classes meet on Sunday mornings, 10:30-11:30 a.m. and Grs. 1-8 (Confirmation Year II) meet on Monday evenings, 6:45-8:00 p.m. Students must participate in religious education classes for at least two years prior to receiving a sacrament. Families are strongly encouraged to have their children attend religious education every year to assist them in their faith development and formation. Families who have children with special needs or older children who have not yet celebrated First Reconciliation, First Eucharist, etc., are encouraged to talk with us to see what options are available for your children s participation. There are tuition and sacrament fees but please note that no one is denied religious education due to financial difficulties. If you have a concern, please contact the RE Office at 847/ to discuss the situation. Please call that same number for other information or to have questions answered. Thank you! RE ASSISTANTS SOUGHT The Religious Education Program can use the help of teens or adults as assistants (in Gr. 1, 2, and 3) in the coming year. If you can give about an hour and a half on Monday nights, enjoy being with children, and have a desire to share our Catholic faith and tradition with them, this may be a ministry to consider. There are some training/formation sessions to attend at the beginning of the year and 31 sessions during the year (from the end of August to the middle of May). Please pray about this invitation and if you would like more information, please contact Dee Stanton at 847/ Archdiocesan requirements for volunteers will also be explained. We hope to hear from you soon! ROOM PARENTS Looking for a way to be a little more involved with the RE Program without having to commit a lot of time? Being a Room Parent might be a way! Room Parents have two meetings a year (August and May); they coordinate one reception during the year and help with set-up, serving, and clean-up; they attend prayer services/ Mass with the children; are an extra pair of hands for special class projects or celebrations (as needed and as available or you call others parents/guardians of the class to help instead). Most Room Parents will tell you it s been a good experience and not very time consuming at all. To discuss your possible involvement with Gr. 1, 2, 4, or 7, and to learn about Archdiocesan requirements for volunteers (application, background check, workshop) please call the Religious Education Office at 847/ SPRED HELPER CATECHIST Our SPRED Community invites you (adults 21 and older) to consider joining us as a helper catechist working with one of our adult friends who is cognitively challenged. The team meets 12 times a year and the whole group meets 12 times a year to share faith and friendship (sessions held on Wednesdays from September- April with a long break near Thanksgiving/Christmas) and then we meet for Mass a couple times (September and Ash Wednesday). As part of your commitment you observe a SPRED session at another parish and you attend a training session (usually on a Saturday). When you join the team, per Archdiocesan requirements, there is paperwork to fill out, a mandatory workshop and a background check. For further information about

Donations may be brought to the Holy Family Room the weekends of August 9-10 and The after school program at Maternity BVM was a big success this past year and lots of children stayed for it according to school principal Paula Calvert. A Brownie Troop was formed during the last few months and they also hope to begin a Junior Girl Scout Troop, too. The following are items that would be very helpful: Soccer balls, basketballs, nerf (soft) footballs, volley balls, hula hoops, jump ropes, sidewalk chalk, all types of arts and crafts materials (for use by the Fun Club and the Girl Scout troops). If you would prefer to make a monetary donation, Mrs. Calvert said it would be used towards volley ball stands and net. ************************************************************************** HUMAN CONCERNS Become a Minister of Care The Ministers of Care at St. Isaac are women and men, retired and employed, of different ages, bringing with them varying life experiences. They have given their time to bring the Body of Christ to parishioners and nonmembers alike who cannot join our or another parish for Sunday Mass. Despite the commitment involved, they have been rewarded. When asked why they continue in this Ministry, several shared: it is a privilege to serve our brothers and sisters in Christ... I find it one of the most rewarding experiences I have ever had experiences that occur... when you least expect Sometimes it seems that I am doing so little, yet it s not always true. I can make a difference without realizing it Please consider joining us. A 5-part Archdiocesan basic training, sponsored by Resurrection and Lutheran General, begins Sept. 17. Classes meet Wednesdays from 7:00 to 9:00PM. The course is designed to prepare new ministers for their work of serving the sick & aging. Sept. 17/ 24 & Oct. 1 sessions will be held at Resurrection; those on October 8 & 15 on Lutheran General s campus. Attendance at all sessions is required. To receive the recommendation for inclusion in the course, a screening interview must be completed. Thanks to all who took advantage and the volunteers who made it all possible. Beginning September 21, our Parish Nurse will have office hours on a Sunday every other month. Parishioners can schedule an appointment before, during or after Mass. Future bulletins will provide details.

6 Page Six Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 27, 2008 FIGHT BACK EXPRESS BUS AT ALEXIAN FIELD The American Cancer Society s Cancer Action Network (ACSCAN) has a grassroots initiative united in its mission to make fighting cancer a top national priority. In the form of the Fight Back Express, the movement will travel 48 states over a 6 month period to rally cancer patients, survivors, and their family, friends and loved ones to encourage elected officials to fulfill their essential role as partners in the fight. The Fight Back Express will be at Schaumburg Flyers Alexian Field this Thursday, July 24 at 6PM. Join others in finding out what you can do to support the effort, and then stay for the Flyers 7:05 game. Tickets are $5 to $11. To learn more about the Flyers game, visit Hospice Training Offered Evanston Northwestern Health Care Hospice s Volunteer Program has opportunities for compassionate people willing and able to share their time and talent. Volunteers can assist terminally-ill patients and families by providing companionship to patients and relief for caregivers, running errands, or offering transportation. Their 8 week training will be held Wednesdays from 9:30AM to 12:30PM beginning September 17 and concluding November 5. We have tried to keep close track of these names for our Bulletin as they are made available to us. However, now we face an important privacy issue, very much like the issues faced by hospitals, health institutions, and certainly by other parishes. We cannot (by law) publicly let our parish community know the health status of any of our members without their permission. We appreciate the fact that often friends, neighbors, and acquaintances wish to do something special for a person who is ill, and ask to place their name on the list to be prayed for. While their intentions are surely good, we simply can no longer accept names in this manner. We will institute a new process regarding calling in names for the Bulletin list. Names for the sick list placed in the Bulletin have to be called in by the person who is ill, or by a member of their family. At the time they call in the name, they will be asked whether they are the sick person him/ herself, or a member of their family, and if they give permission for the name to be placed on the list. They will be asked for the correct spelling of the sick person's name. If a family member, they will be required to give their name for our records. Thank you for your patience regarding this new process. We wish to do all we can to offer our parish community the opportunity to offer prayers for those who are ill but we must also be cognizant of the fact that all members of our congregation are entitled to their privacy in this regard.
