2 Page Two Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 13, 2013 PARISHFEST 2013 A TALE OF TWO STATUES Our Parishfest begins next weekend with a Solemn Mass in honor of our patron, St. Isaac Jogues, at 5:00 p.m. Saturday, October 19 is the calendar feast day of St. Isaac and the North American Martyrs. It is a day to reflect on the life of our patron and the fifty-seven year history of the parish. It is a time to give thanks and remember. But, it is also a time to gain inspiration for the future and to share a rich heritage of faith and culture. This week s bulletin cover shows the familiar outdoor image of our patron, a bronze sculpture by Theodore Gall. Theodore Gall s image, like other figures he has produced, is dramatic and compelling. It is placed within easy view of those traveling on busy Golf Road. In our efforts to discover more about this image, we have consulted a number of parishioners. Accounts about its origin and history do not always agree. What we have been able to garner is that it was commissioned in the mid s to replace the wooden image carved by Fr. Anthony Branken for the Parish Silver Jubilee in 1981.That statue had not held up to our severe winters and was moved to the church interior. We believe the Gall statue appeared in 1986, but have no written record to support this speculation. If you know more about the statue s history please send us a note. I was pleased to find the late Fr. Massion s column describing Fr. Branken s work in the October 11, 1981 Bulletin. It is an excellent appreciation of the image. The statue is made of white oak strips that were glued together. The collar around his neck is the top of his Jesuit cassock. Three ropes appear around his neck: twice captured by the Indians, once by Christ. Over his shoulders is an Indian blanket, torn off on the left shoulder to represent the rough treatment he received as a prisoner. More of the blanket can be seen on his back. His fingers on both hands are mangled. This was part of the torture he underwent for his faith. He holds the Indian child close to him as a protective father would. Notice in the back how the child s arm is wrapped around him... Fr. Massion did not describe the faces of the saint or the child because he thought each of us will have our own feelings about that. One thing Fr. Massion s article taught me that I did not know - - the names of every family registered in the parish were placed in a box that went inside the base of the wooden statue! That is wonderful symbolism - - knowing we are part of the image of our patron. In our own ways we are challenged to reflect our patron s values and sacrifice. During Parishfest, examine the two images of St. Isaac Jogues more closely. After you do, pray that, through St. Isaac s intercession, our parish family be more open to God s grace and dedicated to building the Kingdom of God. -Fr. Luczak

3 Page Three Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 13, 2013 FEASTDAY WEEKEND The Feast of St. Isaac Jogues & the North American Martyrs is next weekend! The Solemn Feast Day Mass will be at 5 p.m. and will include Native American music by Mr. Bill Buckholtz. Following the Mass, 6:00-7:30 p.m. we will hold a Taste of St. Isaac Jogues down in the Parish Hall. At least eight groups will be providing tastes including American, Filipino, Indian, Irish, Italian, Middle Eastern, Nigerian, and Polish. There will be hot dogs, chili, chicken adobo, pancit, samoas, shepherd s pie, mostaccoli and meatballs, salad, hummus w/pita bread, tabouleh, jollof rice, turkey, plantains, kielbasa, pierogi, kapusta, a sweet table and more! Food and beverage tickets (wine, beer, soda, water) will be fifty cents each and tastes will probably be 1-4 tickets. About 7:30 p.m. the fun moves to the Holy Family Room where Patty and the Melts (Lisa Hall & family) will play, sing and encourage us to dance until 10 p.m.! The PARISH 50/50 RAFFLE DRAWING will also take place (are you in it yet to win it?) Bring your families and friends! On Sunday we will have hospitality after all the Masses in the Holy Family Room. There will be a table filled with information about the many ministries and organizations of our parish and a table at which you can register to be a member of St. Isaac Jogues Parish. Come in for some refreshments, conversation, to learn what s offered by the parish and perhaps discover how you might share your time and gifts with us! Invite former parishioners to join us for some or all of the feast day weekend activities! Together let s give thanks for all the blessings God has bestowed upon us and accomplished through our parish community! TASTE OF SIJ FOOD PROVIDERS The groups providing the food for the Taste of St. Isaac Jogues are welcome to come to the Parish Hall on Saturday morning from 9:30-11:30 a.m. to set up tables. 4 Page Four Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 13, 2013 Help our Second Grade students with their service project during the month of October! They are collecting gently used (has all the pieces, please) or new board games for all ages for Maryville Daycare and two homeless shelters in Chicago. You can drop them off in the Holy Family Room each weekend this month or during the week at the RE Office. Thank you! RE classes for Grs. 1 Confirmation Year II will not meet on this Monday. We will resume on October 21 st. The next training session for new Altar Servers will also be on Oct. 21 st, at 5:30 p.m. in the church. Permission slips for the Confirmation Year II trip to St. Martha s are due in the RE Office by October 21 st. The Teen Group meets TODAY at 11:30 a.m. in the parish hall to finish plans for the Taste of St. Isaac Jogues and the month of November. The Teen Group will pray at the abortion clinic from 2-3 p.m. on Oct. 19. Teens who would like to be part of this prayer time are to call the RE Office, 847/ , by Wednesday so we can plan transportation. This would be a special family service project please consider it! ST. JOSEPH TABLE MEETING The first planning meeting for the 2014 St. Joseph Table will be held this Tuesday, October 15 at 7 p.m. in the Holy Family Room. If you would like to be part of the planning of this special tradition which gives glory to God, thanks St. Joseph for his intercession and helps those in need, you are most welcome to come! If you, or someone you know, have never been baptized, are a baptized Christian but want to learn how the Catholic Church lives it s life in Christ, or are a baptized Catholic but have not received Confirmation and First Communion, the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults may be for you. For more information, please call Dee Stanton, 847/ PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY The Prayer Shawl Ministry will meet on Thursday, Oct. 17 at 10 a.m. in Rm. 6. Members are asked to let us know if you will be at the Oct. 26 Mass of the Anointing of the Sick. Shawls and blankets will be blessed at that time. The Spiritual Life Commission will meet on Monday, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. in the RE Office. LITURGICAL MINISTERS: SAVE THE DATE Our annual Liturgical Ministers Gathering for Eucharistic Ministers, High School Altar Servers, Lectors, Ministers of Care, Music Ministers, Planners, Sacristans, Ushers, and interested members of the Assembly, will be on Tuesday, October 29 th, at 7:00 p.m. An Evening With Matthew will be given by Fr. Elston Avenue just west of Cicero at Carmen Street in Chicago. We really need your participation and support! Please sign up in the Holy Family Room after Mass and help change hearts and save lives! RESPECT LIFE MONTH Although it seems to have fallen out of fashion today, there is, in fact, a way of defining a concept of existence, meaning and human life that has worked exceptionally well for individuals and society wherever it has been tried. Jesus Christ explained this concept in his every word and action: Our origin and our destiny is God, our Father, who loves each of us with an infinitely tender and merciful love. The mystery of human life is that we every one of us are precious to God even as we are weak and sinful. As Pope Francis has pointed out more than once, God our Father never stops loving us and never tires of forgiving us. At our least sign of remorse, he fills us with his consolation, peace, and hope. Opening our hearts to life means that we reject the killing of human beings from the moment of conception to their natural death by abortifacient contraceptives and abortions, in destructive embryo research and IVF procedures, by denying life-saving treatment to those with disabilities, and by hastening death of the elderly and dying in assisted suicide and euthanasia. Opening our hearts to life means opposing the death penalty, as well as slavery, human trafficking, terrorism and unjust war, and that we work to eradicate the conditions that prevent our brothers and sisters from realizing their full human potential. To open our hearts to life, however, we must first overcome every tendency to reject people and the demands they make in our daily lives. The culture of death begins and flourishes in a culture of rejection. It begins with seeing oneself as the person whose ideas, interests and wishes should prevail over those of others, even when it will cause them lasting harm. A dramatic but all too common example is the single man who fathers a child, but wants nothing to do with the mother or his baby. Today, unmarried women account for 85% of abortions, and 41% of all children are now born to single women. (Continued next week. USCCB Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities, c2013)

From the beginning, Christians pooled their resources, especially for the care of widows and orphans, at the weekly Eucharist. Over the years, the collection became detached from the liturgy and baskets or plates would be passed through the community while the Mass was going on at the altar, or contributions would be collected at the doors. In Milan s Ambrosian Rite, these gifts have always brought to the altar by lay people in procession. In German countries, the ancient custom was for the entire assembly to process with their gifts first the men, then the women, then the priests and deacons to offer their gifts at the altar. The old ceremony of canonization included a curious vestige of this procession: people would present the pope with two loaves of bread, two barrels of wine and water, five candles, and three cages containing pigeons or turtledoves! 9 Page Nine Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 13, 2013 BREAD FOR THE WORLD Let s join together to again put our faith in action as we observe Bread for the World Sunday TODAY. ``Some in Congress want to go back on our nation s commitments to international efforts to fight hunger, poverty and disease. Others want to make deep cuts to nutrition programs that help mothers and children in our own country. Fortunately, the Catholic bishops and other religious leaders have persuaded Congress to create a circle of protection around programs vital to hungry people. But in the months ahead there will be intense pressure to cut back on measures that alleviate hunger and poverty. You can help by signing a petition asking President Obama to set a goal and work with Congress on a plan to end hunger. It is a small and simple step, but one that will help, hopefully, to create a bipartisan framework for lasting change. Petitions are in the Holy Family Room and outside the other two doors of the church (if the weather permits)! Your effort will take just a few minutes. Please help overcome hunger, poverty and disease and give witness to the social teachings of the Church by your participation. October is Filipino American History Month In November 2009, the US Congress passed the resolution (H. RES. 780),[15] officially establishing October as Filipino American History Month. This is in recognition of the contributions Filipinos have made and continue to make in various aspects of the American progress and culture. A Filipino film showing (with English subtitles) will be held in the Parish Hall on October 27 (Sunday) at 3:00 PM. Please save this date and plan to attend. All are welcome.
