3 Local A3 A ew look ad ew leadership trasform PACC thrift shop ito a shoppig destiatio BY DONNA RHODES Drhodes@salmopress.ews PLYMOUTH A whole ew look ad ew leadership are ow makig the Plymouth Area Commuity Closet s Thrift Shop a great place to fid icredible bargais o clothig ad other items, with profits that geerate fuds for area programs such as Meals for May, the Plymouth Food Bak, fuel assistace ad fiacial aid for those i eed. I April, the board of directors for PACC took a hard look at their umbers ad realized that workig to maitai the thrift store through a outside orgaizatio was greatly ifrigig o their doatios to the causes they support. Sevety-percet of what we were makig was goig toward payig someoe else to ru this store. We could t afford it ay loger ad realized the commuity could t afford it either, said PACC board member Susa Messiger. The board the decided to ot sig a cotract for aother year of oversight of the busiess with ayoe else, but istead took it upo themselves to keep the busiess up ad ruig o their ow. O April 30, the shop o South Mai Street i dowtow Plymouth was shut dow so they could do a total revamp of the iterior. That first ight a team of voluteers coveed to empty the store ad tear up the etire carpet, a project doe i just two hours. The followig day a local cotractor, who also voluteered his time, Doa Rhodes Icredibly low prices, tasteful displays of clothig, accessories ad housewares, ad plety of floor space to move aroud as you browse are just a few of the reasos why the Plymouth Area Commuity Closet s ewly refurbished thrift shop is a great place to shop. arrived to istall a ew wood floor for the shop. Next a paiter came to add a fresh ew look ad Messiger ad her husbad bega desigig a ew clothig rack layout, which did away with stadig metal racks ad istead used poles attached to woode posts iside the buildig. That freed up lot of floor space ad gave us more room to work with, Messiger said. Teams of voluteers the helped sort ad hag items as they prepared for the re-opeig just two weeks later o May 13. As a result, the ew ad improved thrift shop is o loger cluttered with oversized racks that made it difficult to browse item o sale ad tastefully desiged display areas showcase ot oly clothig but household items ad more. A fittig room o the first floor was added for adults lookig to try o clothes ad i the upstairs loft there are ow plety of childre s clothes, books, toys ad accessories. We wated to make it ice, but still keep prices low for everyoe s budget, said Messiger. The low prices they tout are ideed just that, with their large selectio of me s ad wome s shirts, shorts ad pats sellig for $3, while quality jeas are a mere $4 a pair. Clothig items o sale will also vary with the seasos, she added. I thik this is really affordable, said Messiger. We have some icredible items doated ad whe you come i here you may fid there s a $120 jacket sellig for just $20 to $25. With the opeig of their ew ad improved thrift shop however, there have bee a few other chag- es made. Messiger said that due to space costraits ad their voluteer workforce, the shop ca o loger accept doatios delivered i boxes. All doatios must be i plastic bags, are limited to three bags per household, per day, ad eed to be dropped off iside the store durig their regular busiess Cardiga Lodge hoors members hours. We ca t put boxes i the dumpster ad it was costig us moey to get rid of them so we had to put a halt to all of that, she said. Ad as for how much people ca drop off at oe time, the commuity has bee extremely geerous but ow we just do t have ay storage space so we re tryig to limit doatios to thigs we ca sell right ow so we ca make room for other items. Due to public health cocers, PACC ca also o loger accept stuffed aimals or udergarmets, ad they do t have the room to spare for VHS tapes, which are t i demad aymore ow that VCR s are o loger beig maufactured. A big bous the shop offers though are special sales, which may vary from week to week. O those days SEE THRIFT SHOP, PAGE A11 Courtesy I.O.O.F. I was fortuate to speak with Ke Folsom, the Caterbury Tow Admiistrator, who provided some iformatio that I foud helpful. I leared that, ideed, they are buildig a modest buildig o the footprit of their previous buildig which was very old ad i disrepair. The oly additio to the existig footprit was a coferece room with a kitche facility. I also leared some thigs that make a compariso with Bristol difficult. Caterbury has a year-roud populatio of 2,600, ad te years ago, they spet $2.5 millio o a safety complex to house the police (Chief, Assistat, ad three officers) ad Fire (part-time chief ad oe day-time firema, plus voluteers) ad highway departmets ad moved the library ito the reovated previously existig space. Havig resolved some of the space eeds of the highway, fire ad police departmets ad givig the library more room allowed them to be much more ecoomical whe decidig to build ew tow offices o the existig site. Mr. Folsom has, i fact, bee the cotractor ad has experiece i this area which helped reduce the costs of the 2,600 square foot buildig. Caterbury To the Editor: My ame is Travis Austi, ad I am ruig for Grafto Couty Sheriff. I grew up i Daville, Vt., where I graduated from Daville High School i I atteded Plymouth State Uiversity ad eared a Bachelor of Sciece degree i Evirometal Biology i Durig my college summers, I resided i Bristol. I 2004 I was hired as a Police Officer for the Bristol Police Departmet ad atteded the 136th sessio of the New Hampshire Full-time Police Academy. I 2005, I was hired as a Sergeat at the Hebro Police Departmet ad sice 2014 I have had the pleasure of servig the tow as their Chief of Police. The Hebro Police Departmet curretly cosists of eight officers. To the Editor: This is the 45th report. Sice we are t i sessio, I ll share some persoal thoughts about the status of our state ad atio. Frakly, I am cocered about what we are. We seem to have regressed from a idepedet, self-sufficiet citizery to oe where people are askig ot What ca you do for your coutry, but what ca it do for you? to paraphrase Joh F. Keedy. We fid it icreasigly hard to live withi our persoal ad govermetal fiacial meas. We pile up debt ad ask for a livig wage for a etry-level job. We expect govermet to provide retiremet ad health care as a right. Social Security is a tax, ot a retiremet ivestmet, ad health care is our idividual resposibility. Ulike Bristol, with approximately 3,055 year-roud residets, they do ot serve as the hub for other commuities i their area, ad do t experiece a summer ad weeked iflux that ca double the populatio. Oe other thig I leared which is defiitely state of the art is that withi a few years after they built the safety complex they istalled solar paels usig a federal grat, ad pla to use a existig solar array which supports the library for the ew tow hall as well. They are also istallig ductless split uits to provide heat ad air coditioig ad will ot be usig ay fossil fuels to do this. They are aticipatig that the solar istallatios will help keep the cost of electricity low. It seems clear that Caterbury was plaig for space requiremets at least te years ago ad this has allowed them to cotiue to be proactive ad fiscally efficiet whe plaig for this ew tow hall. I wat to thak Ke Folsom for his willigess to speak with me ad for sharig this iformatio about their project. The ew Caterbury tow hall is scheduled to ope i October. Rosemary D Arcy Bristol The most rewardig part of my law eforcemet career has bee the amazig relatioships with the residets ad guests of the Newfoud Lake area that I have developed over the years. I look forward to doig the same throughout the couty durig my campaig. I my free time I ejoy hikig, ruig ad may other physical activities. I would appreciate your support at the polls because together we ca make Grafto Couty a better place. Travis Austi Hebro they should begi where their parets are. 5 For three years ow, I ve bee followig the progress of the USS Machester, ever sice her keel was laid dow i 2015 i Mobile, Ala. Durig the past few weeks, I ve followed her from eat little (ad ot so little) commissioig ceremoies i Portsmouth ad Machester, ad the to ports of call dow the East Coast, i Cuba ad Mexico, ad through the Paama Caal to her home port i Sa Diego, Calif. She is i the most moder class of the Navy s littoral (i.e., coastal waters ) fightig ships, ad to say that she is heavily armed does t quite do it. Let s say that i may ways she outgus much bigger ships of the past. I ame if ot size, she follows what used to be called a pocket battleship, or light cruiser, the USS Machester, which fought durig World War II ad the Korea War ad was decommissioed i The approach of the Fourth of July made me thik of the Machester agai, partly because I ve always wated to visit the Paama Caal ad partly because the deck of a Navy ship might be a fu place to Letters FROM PAGE A4 NORTH COUNTRY NOTEBOOK By JOHN HARRIGAN be durig the atio s oly guilt-free major holiday. That brigs to mid the USS Kearsarge, a 1992 amphibious assault ship ad the fourth Naval vessel amed i hoor of a Civil War sloop famed for foilig Cofederate blockade-ruers. The War Departmet was pretty clever about comig up with ames for ships, all of which helped raised tremedous amouts of moey for the war effort if they were amed for just about ay place people could call home, or wated to (ergo, Kearsarge). The wars were always remedial teachig staff at upper levels ad assig them to the lower grades, eve if it meas a loger day. Help the studets with the basics. Let s get it doe! We let them play violet video games, but tell them to show their femiie side ad sit dow ad shut up i the classroom. Whe they do t, they are coded, drugged ad told to be good little boys. I his book, Sacred Marriage, Gary Thomas makes this importat observatio: what if God desiged marriage to make us holy more tha to make us happy? Is it possible that a difficult relatioship is, i fact, very much to our beefit? The story of Joh ad Susa Barger is a classic case i poit. I Dr. Barger s words, I swaggered through marriage for may years, rulig my wife Susa ad my seve childre with a iro had while citig Scripture as justificatio. I that critical istat, with God s grace, I chose the arduous, udramatic, discouragig path of tryig to be good. Please cosider helpig me keep Grafto Couty s residets safe ad secure To the Editor: I am ruig for Grafto Couty Attorey because I believe that we ca do more to pursue justice ad promote the safety ad security of Grafto Couty s citizes. For the past four years, I ve bee proud to serve the citizes of Littleto, Sugar Hill, ad Fracoia as their prosecutor. I ve worked hard to improve the justice system ad give victims of crimes the justice they deserve. Now, I d like to expad that work to a couty-wide level. I ve always bee a big propoet of alterative setecig programs, such as Drug Court ad Metal Health Court. Those programs make fiscal sese the Metal Health Court has saved Grafto Couty taxpayers early $500,000 sice it came ito existece ad treat problems that a jail setece or fie caot. I Littleto, I serve o the regioal Metal Health Court. I ve see firsthad the trasformatio of idividuals from harassig eighbors to good citizes. As the prosecutio represetative o the Metal Health Court, I was the first perso to questio why veteras sufferig from PTSD ad other service-related ailmets were ot gettig coected to the VA ad gettig services through them. I ve made that happe. My work has ot bee limited to flashy subjects that make the headlies. Whe I leared that there was a discoect betwee the police ad orgaizatios which provide services to survivors of domestic ad sexual violece, I took the iitiative to facilitate meetigs betwee those orgaizatios, to lear what law eforcemet could do better, so that those survivors could see better outcomes i both the crimial ad civil realms. I ve bee passioate about helpig my legislators craft forward-thikig legislatio, such as 2017 s HB94, which gave law eforcemet better tools to combat huma traffickers. Helpig fill the gaps i our laws by workig bipartisa legislatio such as HB94 esures that traffickers, ad others who prey o our most vulerable citizes, caot go free o a techicality. As Grafto Couty Attorey, I ca work with my parters i the justice system ad the legislature o commo sese iitiatives, like expadig the Grafto Couty Drug Court to allow-i addicts who commit misdemeaor offeses istead of just those who commit feloies. We kow that early itervetio works ad I kow from my experiece i the courtroom that may addicts commit small offeses first because they heard o the ews that they could fially get ito a program if they were caught. Right ow, tow prosecutors like me have to tell those addicts that the crime they committed was ot serious eough it was ot a feloy ad, therefore, we ca t help them. That s ot right. I do t wat addicts breakig ito homes or committig other serious offeses just because they wat to get help. Grafto Couty deserves a Couty Attorey who ot oly has the drive, determiatio, ad dedicatio to focus o the fudametal missio of the Couty Attorey s Office to protect the iocet ad covict the guilty but also the visio to move justice forward, ad the record to support it. This celebratio may get you thikig of the may freedoms you ejoy. But have you thought of what you might eed to do to attai fiacial freedom? Your first step is to defie what fiacial idepedece sigifies to you. For may people, it meas beig able to retire whe they wat to, ad to ejoy a comfortable retiremet lifestyle. So, if this is your visio as well, cosider takig these steps: Edward Joes: Fiacial Focus 4th of July - Work Toward Your Ow Fiacial Idepedece Day Pay yourself first. If you wait util you have some extra moey lyig aroud before you ivest for retiremet, you may ever get aroud to doig it. Istead, pay yourself first. This actually is ot that hard to do, especially if you have a 401(k) or other employer-sposored retiremet pla, because your cotributios are take directly from your paycheck, before you eve have the chace to sped the moey. You ca set up a similar arragemet with a IRA by havig automatic cotributios take directly from your checkig or savigs accout. Ivest appropriately. Your ivestmet decisios should be guided by your time horizo, risk tolerace ad retiremet goals. If you deviate from these guideposts for istace, by takig o either too much or too little risk you may ed up makig decisios that are t right for you ad that may set you back as you pursue your fiacial idepedece. Avoid fiacial potholes. The road to fiacial liberty will always be marked with potholes you should avoid. Oe such pothole is debt the higher your debt burde, the less you ca ivest for your retiremet. It s ot always easy to lower your debt load, but do the best you ca to live withi your meas. A secod pothole comes i the form of large, uexpected short-term costs, such as a major home or auto repair or a medical bill ot fully covered by isurace. To avoid dippig ito your log-term ivestmets to pay for these short-term costs, try to build a emergecy fud cotaiig six moths to a year s worth of livig expeses, with the moey kept i a liquid, lowrisk accout. Give yourself some wiggle room. If you decide that to achieve fiacial idepedece, you must retire at 62 or you must buy a vacatio home by the beach, you may feel disappoited if you fall short of these goals. But if you re prepared to accept some flexibility i your plas perhaps you ca work util 65 or just ret a vacatio home for the summer you may be able to ear a differet, but still acceptable, fiacial freedom. Ad by workig a couple of extra years or payig less for your vacatio home expeses, you may also improve your overall fiacial picture. Puttig these ad other moves to work ca help you keep movig toward your importat goals. Whe you evetually reach your ow Fiacial Idepedece Day, it may ot warrat a fireworks display but it should certaily add some sparkle to your life. 18 Sports B6 3,331 miles, 12 states, oe log road trip It bega as a simple idea. Whe my brother bought a house i Lader, Wyomig, I thought I would, at some poit, take a trip out to see him ad brig him some stuff of his from my mother s house i Stark. I figured I could ret a small UHaul ad drive a couple of days to Wyomig ad the evetually fly back home. Of course, it s ever that simple. I checked the UHaul web site ad foud that for some ridiculous reaso, you are t allowed to ret a truck for just four days to get from New Hampshire to Wyomig. Istead, you have to ret the truck for more tha a week, which makes absolutely o sese. Ad if you retur it early, you do t get your moey back. So, I decided that if retig a ucomfortable UHaul with poor gas mileage was goig to cost me as much as retig a comfortable car with good gas mileage, the I would go with the car. I picked up the retal car i Machester o Tuesday ight, Jue 12, leavig my car i logterm parkig. After the Kigswood Seior Sport Awards, I traveled orth to Stark, where I picked up some of the stuff my brother had decided he wated to have for his house. I left the ext morig ad headed for upstate New York, where I spet the ight at my Ucle Rusty ad SPORTING CHANCE By JOSHUA SPAULDING Aut Judy s farm (ad wet to the preschool graduatio for my cousi s daughter, Lydia). From there, I set west o Iterstate 80, evetually makig my way to Hilliard, Ohio, just outside Columbus, where my cousi Jaso lives with his wife, Adrea, ad kids Brayde, Kaydece ad Jaxso. I spet the ight there ad bright ad early the ext morig set out for my ext destiatio, which was oe of the spots I had determied from the start that I wated to visit. Just outside the small tow of Dyersville, Iowa sits the Lasig farm. While that may ot soud familiar, the farm is the site where Field of Dreams was filmed i the 1980s. The locatio looks exactly the same today as it did whe Kevi Coster, James Earl Joes, Ray Liotta ad Amy Madiga were filmig there. The Lasig family keeps the field ope for all to stop ad visit ad walk aroud. It was a surreal momet ad as the ultimate father-so movie, it was oly fittig that I was at the Field of Dreams site o what would ve bee my father s 68th birthday. From Dyersville, I took Route 20 across Iowa to Sioux City, where I spet the ight. I picked up the ext morig ad drove ito Nebraska ad the orth ito South Dakota. As I cruised across South Dakota, I decided that oe of those tows (Chamberlai, specifically) seemed like it would be a great place to live. At the far ed of South Dakota, I woud my way dow a hill ito the tiy village of Keystoe, which is located at the base of Mout Rushmore. This was a truly remarkable moumet ad it was awe-ispirig to see it up close ad persoal. Thus bega the rest of my jourey, as I was back o the road, headig ito Wyomig ad evetually to the Three Peaks Rach i Boulder, where my brother is workig for the summer. He works for Natioal Outdoor Leadership School ad they ru a umber of horse courses ad the horses live o the rach. He is spedig the summer workig o the rach takig care of horses. O Suday, we wet out for a horse ride ad he showed me aroud the rach before we evetually headed to Lader. O Moday, we took a hike up ito the Siks Cayo to the impressive Popo Agie Falls, which were eve more impressive due to the rai that had falle the previous few days. I also helped my brother (a lit- tle, maybe) with a gutter project o his house ad we fiished that up o Tuesday morig. I headed to Dever, where I checked out a Colorado Rockies game at Coors Field before headig to the airport for a very early flight home o Wedesday morig. It was ice to get away from work for a bit (though there was still Pather Volleyball Day Camp comig i July PLYMOUTH Plymouth State Uiversity head wome s volleyball coach Joa Forge will be hostig Pather Volleyball Day Camp July This camp will feature two sessios.
