2 Sunday October 4, 2015 Conversion: The Story of Jonah Jonah Can You Hear Me Now? Questions for further reflection: Have you ever noticed something/someone that you take for granted, but only after you turned your back on it (or him/her)? How does this chapter affect your view of prayer? Do any of the words/phrases Jonah uses specifically in his prayer stick out to you? How might Jonah s time in the fish correspond with the Israelites time in exile? How does that affect the meaning of this prayer? What does all of this say to you about who God is? What does a life of following and worshiping God look like for you in light of this?

If you sing solo or a group, how about using that talent and blessing the Community? Please contact Nancy Freshour, as soon as possible! Did You Know.Did you know that in England mumming is an Epiphany tradition that included dressing in costume with masks and parading? They also sponsor outdoor Nativity scenes. did you know that in many Eastern European countries Epiphany is water sanctification, and that a dive for the Cross is done in imitation of the Baptism of Christ? A cross is thrown into the water and men and boys dive for it. The one who comes up with it is named the King for that day. did you know that in Russia the Great Blessing of Waters occurs on Epiphany Eve? The water is blessed by the priests who distribute it to attendees who may store it to use in times of illness, to bless themselves, family members, and their homes, or to drink. Some Russians think any water-even from the taps on the kitchen sink-poured or bottled on Epiphany becomes holy water, since all the water in the world is blessed this day. 7 Methodist Women Mission Moments After 15 weeks of study we gathered to celebrate the completion of the Bridges Program. Invited to the dinner and graduation were all the people in the program - participants, planners, workers who provided everything from meals to child care and some people from our churches willing to continue to be part of a larger community. Seeing all the people involved, celebrating the achievements of the participants and feeling the connection between people of different backgrounds was a singular moment. We realized we were part of something bigger than any individual and we did it together. Don Edwards, church and community worker, Shalom Zone: Grace Ministries, Roanoke, VA. The Health Ministry Team will be focusing on in topic of Influenza (Flu) for the month of October. This is a reminder to get a flu shot and prevent serious illness from the flu this year. The flu vaccine is available at various locations as pharmacies, grocery stores, and private physician offices. Influenza is a serious disease that can lead to hospitalization and sometimes even death. Every flu season is different, and influenza infection can affect people differently. Even healthy people can get very sick from the flu and spread it to others. Over a period of 31 seasons between 1976 and 2007, estimates of fluassociated deaths in the United States range from a low of about 3,000 to a high of about 49,000 people. During recent flu seasons, between 80% and 90% of flu related deaths have occurred in people 65 years and older. Flu is more dangerous for some people. Infants and young children, people 65 years of age and older, pregnant women, and people with certain health conditions (as diabetes or heart disease), or weakened immune system are at greatest risk. FISH-ing Fact #4407 FISH of Troy continues to offer crisis financial assistance to clients who call from the Troy, Casstown, and Pleasant Hill areas. Myrna Yoder, Director of FISH 2. A church conference invites broader participation of the members of the congregation beyond just the church Council members in that all members of a local United Methodist church are invited to attend and are extended the privilege of vote. All members of the charge or church conference must be members of the local church. Annual Church Conference: Monday, October 19 ~ 6:30pm ~ Sanctuary What is a Church/Charge Conference? The Book of Discipline of The United Methodist Church requires that each local church hold a church or charge conference annually. This annual conference (church or charge) directs the work of the church and gives general oversight to the church council and reviews and evaluates the mission and ministry of the church, in addition to other tasks (as appropriate), such as setting salaries for the appointed or assigned pastors, electing church officers, and recommending candidates for ministry. The difference between a church or charge conference is: 1. The charge conference is the basic governing body of each United Methodist local church and is composed of all members of the church council (or administrative board or leadership team.
