And once a year, they get the joy of delivering holiday greetings to veterans, military families and active-duty service members at hospitals and installations around the world. The cards and personal messages, sent by tens of thousands of Americans, provide a welcome touch of home for our troops during the holiday season. Each year we collect cards between October and early December and then distribute them at military installations, veterans hospitals, and in other locations. There are several ways to be part of the Christmas Mail for Heroes program. In addition to sending cards on your own, you may want to start making plans to host card signing parties or card making parties. Here are a few guidelines to help you on your way: Card Guidelines: Every card received will be screened for hazardous materials and then reviewed by Red Cross volunteers working around the country. Please observe the following guidelines to ensure a quick reviewing process: Ensure that all cards are signed. Use generic salutations such as Dear Service Member. Cards addressed to specific individuals cannot be delivered through this program. Only cards are being accepted. Do not send or include letters. Do not include or home addresses on the cards: the program is not meant to foster pen pal relationships. Do not include inserts of any kind, including photos: these items will be removed during the reviewing process. Please refrain from choosing cards with glitter or using loose glitter as it can aggravate health issues of ill and injured warriors. If you are mailing a large quantity of cards, please bundle them and place them in large mailing envelopes or flat rate postal shipping boxes. Each card does not need its own envelope, as envelopes will be removed from all cards before distribution. All holiday greetings should be addressed: Holiday Mail for Heroes P.O. Box 5456 Capitol Heights, MD The deadline for having cards to the P.O. Box is December 6th. Holiday cards received after this date cannot be guaranteed delivery.

7 Altar Roses A white rose has been placed on the altar in memory of: Ivan Harry, who passed away Nov 8. He is the brother of Sharon Bercot. Kathryn Rogers, who passed away on Nov 11. She is a member of FUMC and the wife of John Rogers. Roses are courtesy of Baird Funeral Home and family members are welcome to take the rose. You may give online at umcor.org or in the offering plate. Please mark your check UMCOR or Philippines. Kyle School Christmas Outreach Our church is a community partner with Kyle School and we have several opportunities to participate in meaningful activities for the students during this Christmas season: 1) Sign up in the gathering room to volunteer at their Christmas Gala on Dec 7 in the morning. 2) Donate a dollar towards their Gala breakfast at the dollar collection on Sun Dec 1. 3) Select an ornament off the green trees on Nov 24 & Dec 1 to purchase gifts for Kyle students and their siblings. Specific directions will be provided on Nov 24 but gifts need to be returned to the church by Sun, Dec 8. The families we help are nominated by teachers and guidance counselors. They do not participate in the Partners in Hope Christmas but both projects are important. We appreciate your support. The FUMC Outreach Committee Thank You! I want to thank Ed Mergler and his crew for the hours spent working at my house to help me get things fixed. It was such a joy to have them here! I heard them laughing, giggling, and enjoying what they were doing because they know that this will help get them a new daughter, granddaughter, niece, etc. If anyone else needs small jobs done, call Ed Mergler! That way the giver and receiver both win! Not everyone gets a little girl for Christmas and this year we all get one! In Christian love for one another, Betty Hatfield I want to thank everyone for all the lovely cards I received as Friend of the Week. Thank you also for the fall mum plant and all the visits from my church family. I so appreciate what a kind and caring church family we have. Thank you to all! Mitzi Low We want to thank everyone for their out pouring of love and support last week through the many cards we received. We were so very blessed by all of our church family. We felt your love. Thank you! Bob and Sue Jones

9 Serve Widows to Save an Orphan SW2SO ("sweat-to-sow") Mergler Adoption Fundraiser Some of you may not be aware that we have been in the process of adoption since 2011 and we are happy to announce that we have been matched to adopt an infant baby girl (due Dec 6). We ll travel to Utah for the birth. Adoption is very expensive. We have done all we can (savings & home equity loan) however, now we need help to bring our baby girl home! We have a $10,000 shortfall... so we ve organized a fundraiser based on James 1:27, "Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world. With our family & friends we have completed service projects for several widows in our community on Nov 9. We are asking that you consider donating to our adoption(orphan) fund (write check to: FUMC with Benevolence Fund in Memo) to sponsor our service on Nov 9 to help bring our baby girl home for Christmas! If you are unable to donate financially, we completely understand and we value your prayers & encouragement! In the meantime, please join us in praying for this courageous birthmother and our baby girl, along with praying for all widows, orphans and those involved in adoption in some way. Though not at our preferred pace... God HAS guided us every step of the way - to Him be the glory! With Sincere Love & Appreciation, Ed, Mel anie & Walter Mergler
