Dead End Chase After a har-rasng rde half-way to Monteagle, everybody decded that perhaps y hadn't gone that way after all. So Fasck wheeled car around, and came back nto Sewanee just n tme to see hoodlums pull out from road n front of St. Luke's. Ths tme chase led m out to Unversty Farm road, whch comes to a dead end after about fve mles. 2 1 publc wll contnue t Phys Ed Can Be Saved Mr. Jones' edtoral n last week's Purple enttled "Wth Apologes to ROTC" seems to deserve some modfcaton and furr dscusson. We agree wth hm that physcal educaton set-up at Sewanee s not too benefcal n ts present state, but we certanly do not feel that because of ths t should be abolshed altoger. Somethng does seem to be lackng n Sewanee's phys ed program, and we beleve that ths somethng s manly a program. Mr. Jones' descpton of typcal "gym" class attemptng to use already over-crowded physcal educaton facltes and half-heartedly "workng ou t" s ndcatve of need for mprovement. In Unversty catalogue we see four men lsted as nstructors under department of physcal educaton, yet we seldom see se men "nstructng" phys ed classes. It s true that perhaps r man functon s to coach varsty athletcs, but surely y would be expected to do somethng more n Sewanee's "non-subsdzed" sports arrangement We wanee 's coaches n phys ed classes, a better and more effcent program wll be on way. On postve sde of ths queston, we feel that a program of requred physcal educaton s very mportant to content of lberal arts. Most of Mr. Jones' statements prove only that present system at Sewanee s nadequate, whch we agree wth. Hs sole argument aganst an mproved system s that "concentraton" n some partcular sport s not possble n a school sze of Sewanee, but he does not prove ths pont. We feel that a small school such as ours should make t much easer for one to develop an ablty n one or two sports, because of possblty for recevng personal nstructon n rules and "fner ponts" of game from qualfed teachers; and ths would certanly not be possble n a class of 100 stu- Wth an mproved physcal educaton system, we feel that Sewanee men would receve a fuller and more thorough development.
