That simple walks with my father around the block on summer nights when I was a child did wonders for me as an adult.*
3 18 From Rev. Gretchen 3 September October 2015 The month of September has, during my lifetime, marked the return to schedules and routines and daily disciplines. Our modern American culture seems geared to the school year calendar above all others. As the summer days fade away and the colorful and cool autumn months arrive we welcome the changes as they occur. Our church calendar continues through September and October with the season of Pentecost, marked with only a few of the red letter days. These days include Holy Cross Day and the days to remember and celebrate the lives of St. Matthew, St. Luke, St. James, St. Simon and St. Jude all which contribute to our history. Only one holy day, designated in white, occurs, that being September 29 th for St. Michael and All Angels. Although our little parish does not usually hold special services on these days it is recommended that we pause, study, pray and reflect on these occasions. The Blessing of the Animals Will be, October 11 Feathers, fur, scales, skin,? Bring them in Or leave em out! At St. Mary s we will celebrate a special service on October 11 to bless the creatures that God has entrusted to our care in honor of St. Francis of Assisi. The variety of animals that are cared for and loved by our people bring such joy to our lives. I am looking forward to the coming months as we continue our journey as God s people within our families and our community. With peace and love to all Rev. Gretchen Andy Rooney: *I've learned* *... That no matter how serious your life requires you to be, everyone needs a friend to act goofy with..*
4 4 8 Sleep Tips for When You Have a Cold By Heather Hatfield WebMD Feature Reviewed by Lisa B. Bernstein, MD Being sick can steal your sleep just when you need it the most. Even when you feel wiped out, it s hard to get your zzzs when you re congested. So use these tried-andtrue tips to get back to the rest you need. 1. Hit the Shower: When you have a cold, your sinuses fill up with mucus, and that mucus makes it hard to breath. As a result, it s hard to sleep. Instead of blowing your nose all night, take a hot shower or bath before you go to bed. "The steam will help clear out your sinuses, and relieve your stuffy nose and congestion," says Jacques Carter, MD, an internal medicine specialist at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Boston. 2. Coat Your Throat: Hot tea (decaf, of course) and honey are a great combination when you have a sore throat, Carter says. A cup before bed will bring temporary relief so you can fall asleep. Or, try a honey cough drop to get the same result, but make sure you don t slip into slumber with the drop still in your mouth. 3. Try a Saline Rinse: "Saline" just means salt water. These rinses can curb mucus, make it easier to breathe, and relieve a sore throat -- all good things when you re ready for bed. A neti pot is handy for giving your nose a good rinse. It looks like a small teakettle, but put the mug aside. The spout goes in your nostril to help wash the mucus out. If you don t have a neti pot, a spray bottle will work as well. 4. Use a Vapor Rub: Just like your mom did when you were little, rub vapor on your chest and neck. And, maybe put a little dab under your nose, Carter says. The rub can improve cough and congestion, which will help you settle down at night. School The children will be collecting aluminum cans to help fund projects and missions. The children are also collecting Campbell Soup labels and box tops. These items will be divided with the schools in Gem County and the school in Middleton. You may have heard of Support Your Local Sheriff and Support Your Local Gun Fighter (both excellent James Garner movies!) Now we have Support Your School Kids! Why is it that people say they "slept like a baby" when babies wake up every two hours?... Why does a round pizza come in a square box?... If a deaf person has to go to court, is it still called a hearing?... Why are you IN a movie, but you're ON TV?... just wondering 17
5 16 5 Harvest Lunch, November 1 After 10:00 service Bring a dish from your bounty?! Invite a neighbor, friend, family member... The more the merrier!! Daylight Savings Time Ends! (Hum that to the wicked witch is dead) Fall Back, November 1 Wow an extra hour to Halloween Party An extra hour to sleep in An extra hour to prepare a fabulous Harvest Lunch dish Pre Convention Meeting Saturday, October 24, 1:00-3:00 5. Banish Dry Air: A cool mist humidifier in your bedroom will help you breathe easier when you have a cold. Carter says a humidifier will also keep your throat from getting dry as you sleep, especially if you re so congested you breathe through your mouth. 6. Manage Your Cough: To get an extra edge when you're sick and trying to fall asleep, take a long-acting cough suppressant. Avoid decongestants at night if you plan to get some shuteye. "A 12-hour cough suppressant will help you sleep through the night when you're sick," Carter says. "But be careful of the decongestants. They can make you jittery and interfere with the sleep you need to get better." 7. Feather Your Nest: When you re sick, a comfy bed with warm blankets and a quiet, dark room will help you sleep, Carter says. As always, avoid TV in the evening, unplug from your computer or phone, and don t have caffeine after 3 p.m. Keep a cool cup of water next to your bed in case your throat gets sore at night. Also, add an extra pillow so that your head is higher than normal. It helps ease sinus pressure and makes it easier to breathe. 8. Grab Your Soup Bowl: It s the ultimate home remedy. Like a hot bath, the steam from the soup can help clear your sinuses. Chicken soup really does give you an advantage. It may cut down on inflammation in your upper airways. That inflammation is behind most of your cold symptoms. While scientists still don t fully understand how it works, Carter says it s worth a shot. Plus, you can t beat comfort food!
