3 14 From Rev. Gretchen Message for January 2014 Dear Friends The next six weeks in the months of January and February comprise our liturgical season of Epiphany. The UPCOMING word epiphany EVENTS is from the Greek language and means 'manifestation' and we use it to mean the manifestation of appearance of God. It has also come to mean a 'bright idea' or a 'great insight'. In cartoons, the little person who has a shining light bulb in his word bubble instead of words best characterizes it. Hence into our informal language comes the term 'bright idea.' We have all experienced personal epiphanies. These are those moments, when for no reason at all, the solution to some little problem is suddenly realized. Perhaps it is a quiet moment by the shore of a lake when you suddenly realize that God is right beside you. Perhaps it is a time when you are immersed in a camping trip, a scenic drive or a peaceful time in your own yard and you experience God in all that you see. These are the everyday epiphanies through which we gain a new insight into some aspect of ourselves or of our faith. We can feel good about the choices we have made or we can learn a worthwhile lesson from a bad mistake. We are blessed that we can find delight in some simple pleasures; discover some good in an apparently bad situation. It is a good time to learn to be more sensitive to the many subtle manifestations of God in our everyday lives. Perhaps we may catch a glimpse of the eternal here and now. A blessed New Year to you all, and may your life be full of Epiphanies!! Rev. Gretchen St. Mary s 2014 Staff and Vestry Bishop - The Rt. Rev. Brian Thom Priest The Rev. 6 6 Nurses Notes Cold Weather Do's and Don'ts by Vittorio E. Rotella, M.D., Chief of Vascular Services and Associate Chairman of Surgery, Richmond University Medical Center With freezing temperatures, shorter days, and more snow and ice than most of us would like, winter can be a difficult time of year. Ah, if only one could hibernate like a bear, and avoid the season all together! Alas, we do not have that luxury. But all is not lost. There are simple things one can do to stay healthy and safe during these bleak, hard months. Ministries in His Service Altar Guild Pam Paulin Ushers Don Mackey / Lectors Rev. Gretchen Chalice Rev. Covering your head with a hat is critical since a considerable amount of body heat can be lost from an exposed head, up to 30 percent. * Next, make sure your feet are well insulated with warm socks and that your hands are covered with mittens. It is important to ensure that the layers remain dry: Wet clothing can result in frostbite damage to fingers and toes and possibly lead to hypothermia (a dangerous lowering of your body temperature). * The cold can also have a drying effect on the body. It is vital to stay well hydrated, particularly if you have to venture outside. Alcohol is not the answer.
