A few thoughts on Easter - Easter cannot be measured by programs, liturgy, the numbers in attendance, music or fellowship. Lent and Easter can only be measured by the extent to which we have allowed ourselves to be transformed by our personal encounter with God. Jesus Christ did not die on a cross so that we would worship him. He died that we may be freed from our sin and in being freed, that we may come to know his grace and his love. His purpose is that we become a people of transformation: loving, forgiving, seeking justice, extending mercy and living a holy life. To accept and to live into these attributes is to experience the Great Easter Event. There are many people who help make Easter very meaningful, but the most important person is you, as you seek to know our living Lord. I would encourage everyone to attend as many of the services planned for the week preceding Easter known as Holy Week. The services scheduled on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday help tell the story and prepare us for the joyous celebration on Easter morning. It helps us live into the suffering and death of our Lord so that the understanding of the resurrection becomes most amazing and glorious.. Springtime is gradually emerges as the Lenten season passes. Our own time of penitence and soul-searching will blossom like the spring flowers at the end of the month into joy along with the sunshine and flowers of Easter morning. Trees that appeared dead in the winter are covered with the color of beautiful blossoms and the bright green of new leaves. Our season of Easter will continue through the entire month of April. We are again reminded that Christ died for us and returned from the dead in the miracle of the Resurrection. The Light returns to our lives. Through Lenten preparation we should be better prepared to continue our own ministries serving as the heart and hands of Jesus.. May we all feel joy and love in your hearts at this very special time as we continue on our journey. Happy Easter to you all! Love and peace, Rev. Gretchen
5 12 5 Rummage Sale April 1 and 2 We are looking for your stuff, big or small, good shape, clean, out of date, don t use it anymore, too ugly,,, and maybe even priced (it would make setup so much easier!) Here s an idea for your Lenten Journey: 40 day of Lent = 40 items to toss into the rummage sale. Clever! Your closets and garage are lighter and the sale will be a huge success. Sunday Prayer Request You are very good about letting Sharron know when to put someone on the list. She would really appreciate it if you would let her know when the person can be removed from the list. Beginning March 1 the names will automatically be removed after four weeks unless she is told otherwise. Housekeeping is everywhere!! Pancake Supper A big THANK YOU to all the people who helped make the Shrove Tuesday Dinner a success. Money is still coming in with the total collected to date (Feb 12) at about $ before expenses. Happy Anniversary Max & Sandi Long 03/17 Don & Jill Mackey 04/02 Alan & Lynne Crabtree 04/05 Brad & Kim Smelcer 04/08 Chris & Mary VanDonsel 4/24 Bishop s Visit/Paradise Point Sunday/Gretchen s BD Wow!! What a Sunday February 14 turned out to be! Bishop baptized one, confirmed three, preached on fear, healing hands during Eucharist. Then there was the brunch (we do know how to eat!) following all this with the donation bucket out for Paradise Point, smore s bark and a birthday cake for Gretchen. Let s not forget the Barber Shop Quartet that sang three songs to our Gretchen! What a grand day. Now we must exercise all that food off. What a way to go!
6 Food for Thought 6 11 Ever had trouble explaining your church to family, friends, neighbors, coworkers or strangers? If so, this little ditty may help. We have been the Church Gathered, We are now the Church Dispersed. Remember, wherever you go, Christ goes. Whatever you do, Christ does. If someone asks what your church is like, tell them I am what my church is like. If someone asks what your church does, tell them My church does what I do. Remember, you may well be the only authentic contact someone has with Jesus Christ because they will not come to church, but you can bring the church to them. Pastor Richard Halverson, US Senate Chaplain I am standing upon the seashore. A ship at my side spreads her white sails to the morning breeze and starts for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength. I stand and watch her until at length she hangs like a speck of white cloud just where the sea and sky come to mingle with each other. Then someone at my side says: There, she is gone! Gone where? Gone from my sight. That is all. She is just as large in mast and hull and spar as she was when she left my side and she is just as able to bear her load of living freight to her destined port. Her diminished size in me, not in her. And just as the moment when someone at my side says: There, she is gone! there are other eyes watching her coming, and other voices ready to take the glad shout: Here she comes! And that is dying. By Henry Van Dyke submitted by Janet McConnell Be social. Social interaction helps ward off depression and stress, which can contribute to memory loss. Look for opportunities to get together with loved ones, friends and others. Lower your blood pressure. Reducing high blood pressure might reduce vascular disease that might in turn reduce the risk for dementia. More research is needed to determine whether treating high blood pressure reduces the risk of dementia. Quit smoking. Some studies have shown smoking in middle age and older might increase your risk of dementia. Quitting smoking might reduce your risk. If you're concerned about memory loss, consult your doctor. Our eyes and ears What's happening With age, you might have difficulty focusing on objects that are close up. You might become more sensitive to glare and have trouble adapting to different levels of light. Aging also can affect your eye's lens, causing clouded vision (cataracts). Your hearing also might diminish. You might have difficulty hearing high frequencies or following a conversation in a crowded room. What you can do To promote eye and ear health: Schedule regular checkups. Follow your doctor's advice about glasses, contact lenses, hearing aids and other corrective devices. Take precautions. Wear sunglasses or a wide-brimmed hat when you're outdoors, and use earplugs when you're around loud machinery or other loud noises.
7 10 7 Aging: What to expect (Part 3) By Mayo Clinic Staff You know that aging will likely cause you to develop wrinkles and gray hair. But do you know how the aging process will affect your teeth, heart and sexuality? Find out what kind of changes you can expect in your body as you continue aging and what you can do to promote good health at any age. Your memory What's happening Memory might naturally become less efficient with age. It might take longer to learn new things or remember familiar words or names. What you can do To keep your memory sharp: Include physical activity in your daily routine. Physical activity increases blood flow to your whole body, including your brain. This might help keep your memory sharp. Eat a healthy diet. A heart-healthy diet might benefit your brain. Focus on fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Choose low-fat protein sources, such as fish, lean meat and skinless poultry. What you drink counts, too. Too much alcohol can lead to confusion and memory loss. St. Mary s Academic Achievement Award (AAA) In order to encourage and challenge the youth in our immediate church family, we have established the St. Mary s Academic Achievement Award. One hundred dollars will be awarded to any high school, junior high or middle school student who receives a 3.5 GPA report card. For our young people it is vitally important for them to understand that getting the finest education possible, and using that knowledge with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, is their best hope both for their future and for the future of mankind. Requirements: In order to apply for the award the student must attend St. Mary s Church and must have a parent, grandparent or guardian who is a member of St. Mary s Church. Report cards should be submitted to the Priest or to a member of the vestry.there is no application form. If more than one student qualifies, multiple awards will be given, but students may only receive the award once during each academic year. The awards are funded by the L. Dean and Gay Welch Memorial gifts in keeping with their lifelong support education excellence. Stay mentally active. Mentally stimulating activities help keep your brain in shape and might keep memory loss at bay. Do crossword puzzles. Take alternate routes when driving. Learn to play a musical instrument.
