1 The Episcopal Church of the Covenant 314 N. Adams (4th & Adams) Junction City, Kansas (785) Fax: Fr. David Jenkins: Website: AUGUST 2013 NOTES FROM FR. DAVID This summer has been a tough time for The Church of the Covenant. We have bid farewell to several of our dear military families as they have been assigned to a permanent change of station. We are a small church and we feel the impact when one of our members and especially one of our families is not present. We pray God s continued blessing on the families of Treb and Anna Courie; Shawn and Jennifer Leverington; Terry and Heather Tanner; Beau and Kate Wasson; and soon we will bid William Keogh farewell. The Church of the Covenant is a missionary congregation in many respects we are blest to be outside the gates of Ft. Riley and we take seriously our trust from God to care for military families. Our attendance ebbs and flows as a result of our military mission and we look forward to new military families to join us as well as other persons/families from our community. On August 11 during the Bishop s visitation we will confirm five adults: Lonnie Clark, Anne and Keith Collett, Mary Anna Jenkins, and Lisa Ventor as well as two youth: Zachary Cody and Haley Coffey. We celebrate these additions to our church family and the ways they each contribute to our congregation. Good things continue to happen here at The Church of the Covenant even if our pews are not as full as they were a couple of months ago. We are a welcoming congregation who is God encouraging you to invite and welcome to our congregation? Praise be to God! 5 Letter From Deacon Rex Now that The Church of the Covenant officially has its first Deacon, I find this to be a wonderful time to discuss the ministries of Deacons. We all know that as baptized Christians, we all are called to certain ministries through our baptismal vows and some of us are called further to ordained ministry. In our Episcopal and Anglican Church we have a three-fold ministry of ordained ministers. As I am sure you know this three-fold ministry consists of deacons, priests, and bishops, all with their own calling and duties. Through discernment and prayer the person being called comes to be called either to the diaconate or to the priesthood. All ordained ministers in our church are first ordained as Deacons and we all share in the Diaconate even as Priests and Bishops. But vocational deacons are called just to be deacons while priests serve a short while as deacons and then are ordained as priests, and some priests become consecrated as bishops. Ministry as deacons revolves around service and servant hood. Deacons are called to be icons of Jesus Christ, to be servants as Christ was a servant. A Deacon is a man or woman called into holy mission in the Church and in the world to lead the people of God in service in the name of the Risen Christ, and to serve the Church and the world as messenger, agent and attendant. Deacons are messengers of the Gospel who proclaim the good news to the Church and the world. They do this in part by proclaiming the Gospel in the liturgical assembly and by presenting the needs of the world to the Church. Deacons call all of the members of the Body of Christ to the work of transforming the world by striving for justice and peace among all people. Deacons are agents of the local Church and diocese and are to serve directly under the authority of and are accountable to the Bishop. In this capacity deacons are the go-betweens who connect the work of the local congregation to the work of the diocese. Deacons are attendants who prepare the Holy Table for the Eucharist and help lead the faithful who gather week by week to continue in the apostles teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of the bread and in the prayers. The role of Deacon requires unique gifts and formation, serving as an ordained messenger of the faith outside the walls of the congregation. Deacons model how to be in the Church and in the world as icons of service, and they have the ability to inspire that life in others. Deacons help all members of the Body of Christ to be free to find places of connection with God in their lives beyond Sunday morning. Deacons are not those who alone do the work of the Church in the world; rather, they gather, lead, equip, and inform the laity in that work. In all their work, Deacons enhance the ministry of the laity, not supplant it. Faithfully, Rex H. Matney, Deacon When and where is Fall Fun Fest held? The next Fall Fun Fest event will be Sept , 2013, at St. Margaret's, 5700 West 6th St. in Lawrence. Check-in for Fall Fun Fest is between 12:30-1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21, at St. Margaret s.
